Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - October

Yes, I will argue, as you predicted.  Emil Zatopek:  "If you want to run the mile, train like a marathoner."  Of course he oversimplified, but you see his point.  BTW Fred, I am familiar with that study and approach.  They get people doing very short all-out bursts and yes it has some positive effect, but I doubt that training alone would be optimal for someone doing distances longer than 400 meters.

Does it look like that spunky Euphie is bullying me?  I need a bit of help here.   Spareribs

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - October

Jim, I've been able to maintain fitness even with the reduced mileage lately, so I was happy with my 5K time.  Hopefully I'll be able to increase my miles soon and get back to trying improve my times.

Euph, forget the applause, but I could use a good chili recipe if you've got one.  Great workouts for you lately!

Here's a couple of good links, take a look at who was the outright winner in the first one... http://www.coolrunning.com/results/08/nh/Oct4_NewHam_set2.shtml

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - October

Yesterday I went out after work and did a very easy 5.03 recovery miles - 47:08 (9:22) - Avg HR 122 Max HR 130 bright & sunny and 68 degrees, I know we have to enjoy everyone of these days we get from here on in New England because the cold weather is definitely on the way!  My legs felt fine, a little tender but no problems at all.  I'll do another easy 5 later this afternoon and then head off to my Yoga class.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - October

Morning ksrunr good to be back here at coolrunning.  Hey Rich I took a look at the article on your niece, fantastic.  I actually run from UNE on most Sunday mornings with our group and one of our regular "Maine Rowdie" members is one of her coaches "Jerry"  he is also a professor at UNE (head of the Chemistry Dept.).

Euphie; regarding:

"Jim, what's next?"

Not much time to rest as I have Humboldt Half Marathon coming up on 19th. After that is Clarksburg 30k on Nov 9, and if all goes well, Cal International Marathon (CIM) on Dec 9. How about you?

"  Great race Jim. Did you go head to head with any of the 55 year old guys?"

Thanks Fred. I didn't have much in the way of head-to-head this time although I did chase after a 51-year old guy for a while before finally overtaking him. He had gray hair and a bald spot so I thought he might be in my division. The 55-59 winner ran 1:25:38. These mass media events have the Africans and huge fields but age-group competiion usually isn't near as tough as in the smaller USATF events. It makes for a good story, though, to say you had a high finish in such a large field. The next 2 will be USATF and I'm sure I will be tested in them.

Good luck, KS. You should run well.

Have any of you been experiencing more problems with this site? Things seem to be worsening on my end. I get a lot of system error messages and I'm getting stuff in my mailbox again with links to threads here.

Jim - I've had some problems on this site again as well.   I'm getting system errors and I tried to log on the other day and couldn't find our 50+ forum anywhere.  The threads were all different from what we normally see.  Thankfully no emails though.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - October

Hey Bob, small world, eh? Jessie's actually my great niece. She's an accomplished XC and downhill ski racer and Triathlete as well as a runner. It'll be fun to see how she progresses running for NE college, her times are still coming down.

And I wanted to congratulate you on your last marathon, you had a great race. I thoroughly enjoyed the report too, you're good at putting readers right there on the course with you.

Jim, I'm having problems with errors as well, hopefully they'll get it fixed soon.

ksrunr, good luck in Hartford!

Wednesday,

7 miles easy. My achilles doesn't seem to be affected by easy running, only when I run hard. I'm tossing around running a 5 mile race this weekend, then I'll have to back off and let my heel heal...

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - October

That was a marvellous race Jim!  Congrats on making it all come together in one package!

Zatopek isn't the only person to say that.  Lydiard training emphasizes standard base training for all distances from 800 meters and up.  Specialty training only begins once base is laid in.

We're getting snow at the mine site so all running is indoors.  The past two days were a form of intervals, where I run 4 min at 2% and then up the slope to 6% for a minute.  It forces my hammies to take more load.  They feel sore right now, but by spring I'll be doing the same workout with a minute at 12%.

Tomorrow is the last work day.  Friday I'm heading out hiking in the mountains to get some pics of the fall colors.  Gotta watch out for bears, as they are eating virtually 24 hours per day right now in prep for winter hibernation, and they would love to drag a snack into their cave with them.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - October

Rich when I see Jessie's coach this weekend I'll have to ask him about her.

My run yesterday consisted of 5.02 easy recovery miles again - 45:03 (8:58-) Avg HR 123 Max HR 133 in nice 62 degree weather.  We had some pretty good rain on my way in to work this morning but the forecast is calling for skies to clear and temps of 70 degrees by later this afternoon.  I'm going to head out for a nice 10 miler and see if I can't squeeze in some nice 8 minute miles to see how the legs respond if they respond at all that is!  I think my Yoga class last night really loosened up my quads and my hamstrings and they are feeling really good this morning.

Have a great day everyone.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - October

My post got eaten I think.  Anyway, I've run about two miles each morning that I have been in Chicago this week.  Today is an off-day as I hate packing wet clothes in my luggage.  Tomorrow I expect to run well and throughout the weekend, then I am back here next week.

Many friends are running Hartford, including Ks so I will be following the race.  Ks, what is your bib number?   Spareribs
