"There is the truth about the marathon and very few of you have written the truth. Even if I explain it to you, you'll never undertand it, you're outside of it."
by Douglas Wakiihuri speaking to journalists
I ran my first marathon this month and I have found this to be true.
"You don't run 26 miles at five minutes a mile on good looks and a secret recipe" --Frank Shorter, 1972 Olympic Gold Medalist
"I always say if the marathon is a part-time interest, you will only get part-time results." -Bill Rodgers
"Nobody said it would be easy, they just said it would be worth it."- unknown
"I felt like I played in a very rough football game with no hitting above the waist". -Alan Page, former Nfl football star
"The truth is you can always run faster but sometimes the truth hurts." -unknown
We are different, in essence, from other men. If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon. -Emil Zatopek
"Three hours?! I don't like to do things that feel GOOD for three hours!" -
Gwyneth Paltrow, on running a marathon.
I smile every time I think of this line....especially when I'm ready to quit after 20 minutes
Dear Dryther-thanks for sharing your Pre perspectives. Just reading those makes me feel like getting up from my desk and running out the door for Pre's big heart and my own!! J
Okay here's a few more marathon related ones:
"If you want to win something, run a 5K. If you want to experience something, run a marathon." - Emil Zatopek
"The marathon can humble you." - Bill Rodgers
"Running teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we could not go. It helps us to find out what we are made of." - Patti Summer, Olympic Marathoner
And my all time favorite... The one that helps me with the last 6.2 miles of a marathon... drum roll please...
"Run if you can, walk if you must, crawl if you have to but don't give up." - Dean Karnaze
You are welcome for the pre wisdom, every time I feel like not running I think back to what pre was about and realize its not about running.....its about how you live your life and never looking back and wishing you had given more. People all the time ask my why I run so much or so far, and I just say you won't understand. If you want to watch the movie Without limits,Pre, or fire on the track and you may just might understand why we run.
Here is one of my favorite quotes:
I don't want to win unless I know I've done my best, and the only way I know how to do that is to run out front, flat out until I have nothing left. Winning any other way is chicken-****.
I heard this from one of my running coaches, althought it may have been recited by thousands of people. I liked it so much I had it printed on the back of a couple of race shirts, I wear these at every race.
"JUST SHUT UP AND RUN!"
It gives you that sort of warm zen feeling doesn't it.
"Pain is temporary...finishing lasts forever" (not sure who said it but I have it on a t-shirt)
A funny one that I will wear at my half says "wait! I thought this was 1.31 miles!"
"If you want to start beating the Kenyans, send shoes and wait a couple of years." -I said that.
