Hey Craig! I used the Magical Express when I went in August, and like everything else Disney does, it was pretty great. NB: When they say it will be a couple of hours before you get your luggage, THEY REALLY MEAN IT. If you want to change into something right after you arrive, you need to keep it in whatever you are carrying on with you.
My wife and I ran MCM and are running Richmond. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to do a midsize marathon (Richmond was 22nd largest in 2007, but 10th is 6000 runners and 22nd is 4000 so is there any real difference). Richmond is fast and freindly with slight hills, we are a little biased because we live 20 miles from the course but I don't think you will find a better organized marathon of similiar size. I will offfer to pick anyone's packet up in advance but I don't think it is allowed without ID. However I belive if you contact www.sportsbackers.org and tell them that person xxxx is picking your packet up they will allow it if you have a ligit excuse. Although I have only been posting for a little while I will also offer to host any regulars at my house which is about 15 miles north of Richmond off of 295 (about 45 minutes to F-burg) if anyone needs assistance Friday night. However if you ride with us you have to agree to go to Sine's Irish pub immediatley following the race. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the Magical Express info! I found a way to get the Pop Century hotel, but the cancellation fee would be $100...
Also debating driving back post-marathon at Richmond or staying a second night...
Thanks guys! I'm still debating onsite or offsite. Has anybody used the Disney Express hotel-airport shuttle service? If so, what did you think?
Also for anybody who stayed onsite for the marathon, what did you think of the bus service on race day?
Yeah, what Holly said. The Express is right in the airport and works like freakin' magic! You get your ticket (in advance from Disney in the mail) and when you get there they "check you in" and tell you which line to get in and you just get in the velvet-roped line and wait for not very long. I've used it twice so far and I'll use it again this year.
As for the shuttles for the expo and the race, they work well but the expo is CROWDED and it does take a while to get around. Walking is NOT an option between venues at Disney. Too far and no sidewalks. However, they do have good inter-venue transportation including buses, boats, and the monorail. All free.
I reserved my room back in August I think and I'm staying at the Pop Century for something like $67/night. They tried to sell me the marathon "package" which was $99/night and included a free round (or 2) of mini-golf and some plastic luggage tags. Um, no thanks. I'll take the $67/night AAA rate and buy my own round of mini golf. And I'm in from the 8th to the 13th if I remember correctly.
I LOVE DISNEY!
And in other news, US Airways is flying there for $181 this year! I waited until last week to book that so I could get a sub-$200 ticket. That worked out very well!
Now, about Richmond... I'm in. It's going to be a tough race at this point. My knee feels fine but my 13.1 miles yesterday went well but not what I'd call "stellar" and the legs are definitely fatigued. So I'm going into Richmond with the hope of finishing first (at all, not place), sub-4 second, and a PR third. I haven't made up my mind about the expo yet but dinner on Friday may get me to leave work early to meet for dinner. Otherwise I had planned on going down there on Thursday to miss traffic -- or actually enlist the help of someone here or elsewhere to pick up my crap. Of course there's nothing quite like going to the expo yourself and spending a little money!

YMMV. My bag was waiting for me. It really depends on where you stay. At Pop Century they just dropped the bag in my room and life was good. When I moved (2 years ago) to a different hotel and used the "inter-hotel transfer" option, they wanted me to call their bell desk so it could be delivered (and they could get a big fat tip!) I'm going to do what most American travelers are doing these days and see if I can fit 5 days worth of crap into a bag and a "small personal item" that I can carry onto the plane!
Your Magic May Vary?
Is there a notable difference between Pop Century & All-Star Movies? I can still get Pop Century with a $100 cancellation fee. All-Star Movies has a $25 cancellation fee - Ahhh! The price just jumped! Now it's $29/night extra over what you paid for either hotel.
I just tried AAA. It shows $67/night for Pop Century, great! I enter all info, wait for the confirmation, and it says "invalid date range selected" even though the date range is fine. Ugh! Does Disney have a Magical Express for reservations??
I'm a notorious over-packer but I still usually can cram enough into my carry-ons. 5 days of carry-on would be beyond my skill level.
Richmond dinner is La Grotta at 5:30 pm. Just let me know when you decide. Same to Chris and anybody else who wants to come.
They are in two different places. I was sceduled to be at All Stars but switched to Pop Century because Jerry was there and I figured logistics would be simpler. But it got stalker crazy when they put me in the room next to his. I didn't ask for that, just the same building. LOL
Craig -- call them! Tell them you want the AAA discount. They may or may NOT have run out of rooms at that rate. But I can't understand how they even HAVE a cancellation fee right now when they're so underbooked.
Pop Century and All Stars are all "value resorts" but Pop Century is newer. Not that it really makes much of a difference since Disney tends to keep up with maintenance. The thing is, for a "room", I was VERY satisfied at $67/night vice the "premium" resort I stayed at for $200+/night where I felt like I was inconveniencing them just to stay in a nicer building with only a moderately nicer room.

I called Disney late last week and AAA today. AAA said the value resorts were sold out, but they have Coronado for $2,140 (approx.) for three nights. Sure, no problem, only about 10 fold increase in price.
I tried all different versions with Disney. First regular, then marathon, then AAA. I just found Orbitz with All-Star Music & Sports each for $82/night (with $25 cancellation fee - don't they realize this stupid cancellation fee has been what's stopping me from reserving??). Pop Century is sold out there.
Craig,
Can you try thru Shades of Green? Do you have military? Or civilian service connections? They overflow into other places.....
Jerry and I had discussed Shades of Green. In January and September any honorably discharged vet can stay there (which we both are). Normally you have to be active duty or retired or certain civil service categories. They are between the "value" and "moderate" Disney hotels in price. They are supposed to be the largest rooms in the park, and among the nicest. One disadvantage is they have their own transportation that connects to Disney transportation only at a few places. You can, however, walk "across the street" to the Polynesian to catch Disney transport.
We've come this far and it's still the same,
Runnin' out here in the rain.
Just one more mile, if only you could fly.
(Apologies to T. Rush and J. Tempchin, for the paraphrase)
Len did some good legwork on this and its not well publicized. If I weren't a cheapskate, I'd stay there but they're over $100/night and when I can get a "just fine" room at Pop Century for $67/night, I'm going to stay there. If I weren't running and just wanted to stay at a nice hotel at Disney, I'd go to Shades of Green. But then again, I'm an honorably discharged vet.
Craig... $82/night is a good deal. You'll spend more than that cancellation fee if you keep waffling. . . BOOK IT!
Oh how lame! I see Pop Century showing availability on Travelocity. I immediately click "Continue" to book and it says "we're sorry, it must have just sold out." I try All Star Music (cheaper anyway), same thing happens! What kind of Mickey Mouse outfit is this?? They have $75 off a 3 night stay if using Mastercard so it's worth trying them again tomorrow... Orbitz has $0 off, not such a great discount. I found out that the vacation plans have a 45 day cancellation policy so they're expecting lots of cancellations over the next couple of weeks; Disney says "keep calling".
Craig- we just got an email yesturday offering a 4 day vacation to disney for 4 people for 1200.00- not including air fare- I am sure there are deals available. From what I have heard- and read- Disney has been hurting with the , dare I say the "r" word. Keep working on it- call the specific hotels direct - My sons football team is competing for a spot in the national championship in disney in dec and the rooms are cheap- 68 bucks a night. Good luck- Kathy
