Treadmill issue

I've been running on my treadmill for all my runs, since it is easiest for me to run while my toddler is napping in the am. My recent problem though is now that I have significantly increased the amount of time I am running for on my long days, the treadmill shuts off on me before I finish!! I do not have it set to a program, as they all shut off after 30 minutes. I use it on manual, but right at exactly 100 minutes it starts it beeping to signal me that it's about to stop, and then it stops!! How frustrating!! I contacted Nordictrack and could not seem to get anyone who knew what they were talking about. They would either say somethings wrong with the motor, or could be a computer problem. Doesn't make sense to me. If there were a problem I don't believe it would be giving me the 3 beep signal that it's about to shut off like it does if you are using a program on it, plus why would it always shut off right at exactly 100 minutes each time?? So I am hoping someone may have heard of this happening to someone before or maybe you have experienced this for yourself. The treadmill was just purchased this past may, it seems to be running just fine, and it always turns right back on for me. I would think if you turn a treadmill on manual it should keep on going until you shut it off. I'm thinking of switching my long run to a weekend day so I can run outside, and not have to deal with it shutting off on me...Any advice???

Re: Treadmill issue

I don't think there is anything wrong with it so much as some kind of setting. I don't know how they have this set up, but the treadmills at the Y shut off after 30 minutes too. There it's part of the whole 30 min time limit to keep people from camping out on them but it sounds like somehow you have this on that setting. I don't think using it on manual versus a progam has anything to do with it at least it doesn't have any effect on it at the Y.

I can't believe that no one at Norditrack can figure it out. Would it be crazy to call a health club and ask them? Ok yes that is a little crazy but it just might work.

ps. I hate computers and yes I do in fact work with them all day.

If you bought it from a local store you might get an answer from them.  I've never been on mine that long to know if it would stop or not.

Re: Treadmill issue

It definitely sounds like some type of precautionary setting, maybe to ensure the motor doesn't overheat. That sounds incredibly frustrating though. If you bought it somewhere that specializes in selling Home Gyms and fitness equipment, your best bet may be to ask them as they are usually very knowledgeable about he products. On the other hand, if you bought it at a chain sporting goods store, they probably won't be able to help you much. I'm not surprised that Nordictrack support wasn't able to help you as they are more general customer support rather than product experts.

Wish I could offer more help, but I would definitely try a specialty store that sells fitness equipment.

Re: Treadmill issue

I do believe all treadmills have a safety mechanism built in to shut them off after a certain duration (most I've heard of are 90 minutes). Whether this is for the safety of the machien or the runner, I don't know. However, electric motors are not designed to work under load for an indefinite amount of time without some sort of constant cooling or lubrication. If you remove or disable the mechanism that is shutting the treadmill down, you may find that the machine will suddenly shut down because of an overheating or seized motor, which is much worse.

Re: Treadmill issue

Hi Carey,

At the rec center that I go to, all of the machines are set for a maximum of 60 minutes.  However, when the treadmill counts down and then blinks END, I hit the quickstart button and it continues with my mileage and calories burned.  I have gone beyond 100 minutes.  The only bad part is that when it gets past 100 minutes, it quits counting seconds, but at least it keeps going.  I'm drawing a blank on the brand of treadmill but I know that it is not a Nordic track.

I agree that a local gym might know.  Salespeople at a specialty running store may also know.

Good luck and happy running!:)

Re: Treadmill issue

When your treadmill shuts off at 100 minutes, can you restart it right away, or does it remain off for some period of time before allowing you to restart?  If it stays off for a while, then it probably is doing so to keep the motor from overheating, as was noted. If that's the case, then overriding the software would not be a good idea. However, if you can restart it right away, why not just do so? - would probably be a 30 sec break at most, and you could treat it as a water stop.
