Does anyone know of any Ultra's (50 miles) in Michigan (or OH, IN) within 100 miles of the Ann Arbor area? I've finished a couple marathons, have one more lined up for 2009 and I'm toying with the idea of an ultra for 2010. I'd like it be relatively close to home to cut down on travel expenses. The active calendar came up with zero matches; I'm hoping you have a secret event that hasn't made it to active yet. Your input is appreciated!
Thanks Toby. I spent some time on the website, looking at last year's pictures and watching some videos on youtube. For my first ultra, it certainly seems a little intimidating (on top of the intimidating distance!). Have you done this before? Any insight? Am I better off looking for another event for my first ultra?
For the location and convenience factors alone, I think you should consider it. Or atleast attempt the 50K option which looks like a lot of fun. Its later in the season for 09 so you have plenty of time to prepare. I'd get involved with them in some shape or form. The ultra runners associated with that event are bound to be a great resource for training group runs or other local ultras you haven't discovered yet.
Thanks! Now that is more up my alley. That sounds like a great challenge. I assume you've ran this before, any comments on the event? Now I just have to convince my wife that I haven't lost my mind and won't kill myself!
Yes, I've run it 2 times 06 & 07. The 50 mile consists of 2 loops all on trail. Great support on course and there is access for your own support group to get on course at points along the way (organizers have map). Also have a nice post race party. There are also a couple of training runs on the course during the summer so you have a chance to run the trail prior to the race.
Some are further than 100 miles from Ann Arbor, and I left in the longer races... but this should help:
Creek 50k, Rochester, MI\
8/22/2009 Marquette Trail 50k, 50 mile, Marquette, MI
9/13/2008 Lake City 50k, Winona Lake, IN\ (link goes to marathonguide.com)
4/19/2009[ Forget the PR, Mohican 50k, Loudenville, OH\
I've been bitten by the trail/ultra bug recently and was wondering if you had decided on a race to do? I'm really leaning toward the North Country Trail 50 but still not coonfirmed. Mohican in Ohio is tempting too. I'll be doing Glass City too (since it's my hometown) so see you there. Happy Running,
