Re: My knees don't like the treadmill.  Need advice, please!

Happy Holidays!

Just reading about your question and the great replies people have posted.  I would advise you to visit an excellent physical therapist in order to find the true answer.  As a physical therapist, I examine and work with runners of all ages and goals.  Most have flexibiltiy, strength, and other deficits that will affect their running.  Learning how to address these deficits through specific exercises and hands on "manual" physical therapy can be truly beneficial.  An excellent physical therapist can determine what is needed through a thorough examination which will take just 45 minutes of your time.  Why keep guessing what the cause may be when you can have a skilled professional determine what you need.

Good luck,

Jim, Physical Therapist Morristown NJ

And good advice for cyclists and other athletes as well.  I know that my PT friends are on point when I'm injured and functionally oriented and problem solvers.  This is a safe and sound way to go and I'm glad Jim took the time to respond.

Angel,

Interesting response. How would you describe the difference between the shoes you prefer on the surfaces?  Stiffer, less waffled, etc.?

Thanks,

EJ,

I found that my muzunos work wonders for me out side.( More support)It seems as if  my feet on the TM do not overpronate as much as they do outside so I use sauconys w/gel incert for the Tm. It has taken me 5 pairs of shoes to find the right ones and It was worth it.so take time for the shoes obviously we all now that our feet take a beating so take care of them,Good Luck!

A!

I use Alines in my shoes.  I did have an older pair of Asics that had a footbed option that worked great for the pronation but the Alines are fantastic for cycling and skiing too. I now rep them here in Michigan I like them so much.  I use them ice skating and in line too when I do that though not so often anymore.  Also I have a cycling cohort who uses them in his xc skate skiing boots.  Check out www.ALINE.com.  Not pricey either.  Thanks for your response.

Due to snow covered roads all winter I have been running a TM. Should I increase the speed or the incline to improve my pace. I usually run 5.8 Mph and 3% incline, anything lower and I run into the dash board.  I have some advise for long distance training, know when you TM will shut down, mine is at 100 min, that is the point when most movies are getting real good.
