40 minutes, 12 degrees, wind chill of 5 below. It was a good one.

What is a ten second hill sprint? I have never heard of a hill sprint. It sounds to me like something one had better be warmed up for.

I fear no race, for I did run the Second Annual Wicked Frosty Four.

Euphoric, that must have been awesome! Did you have to use a ski mask? Did anything tighten up on you unusually so? One other question: Were you the only runner out there? I'm skipping one more run, that's today. Saturday, I get back into stride.

Euphoric - bbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

My iphone is my alarm clock in the mornings.  Yesterday it went haywire and I had to reboot/reset it.   I didn't know it wiped off the alarm settings when you do that.  Consequently I stood up a couple running partners this morning.  One of which just ran his first marathon in 3:00:47.   Guess I needed the rest as I woke up at the same time the run would have been over.   Now I've got to call and explain.

Have a good day all.

6 miles slow for me today.  I need just 6.6 over the next two days in total for my 3rd 35 mile week in a row.

I think these ten-second hill sprints are a new craze based on a Runners World article, but please correct me if I am wrong. I have seen a few others do them.  I think you get a short explosive workout which is good for the legs and for form and turnover.  I imagine you get the same with strides during or after a workout but without the strength needed to charge a hill.  And yes of course you would want to be very warmed up before such an exercise.   Spareribs

Paul, these temps are not  a big deal here and my injury history had me delighted to go out in what my husband reported to be 20 degree temps.  You can learn lots from our MIA Rich about running in chilly weather.  Rich's info would have had me better prepared and prevented stinging legs/numb fingers.

Rich, we need an update.

Wishing all an early TGIF.  I'm a little sore and looking forward to tomorrow evening's pool run.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - February

Ribs, kudos for the three weeks in a row 35 miles.

Euphoric, I just read more about pool running today. It's the best substitute for running, from what I read. I think I'm going to try it one of these days just to see what it's like. Minus 5 degrees is cold....

KS, sounds like that day off might have been good (that is, unless you decided to go later in the day). I usually play it by ear as to when I'm going to run--lately it's usually late afternoon. But, I love early morning (5:30) runs. But I'm almost always at work by 6 am so I can leave earlier in the day.

Today was 8.20 miles, easy, all in the pouring rain, and I was pleased since I had 6 miles in mind. Everything was sound. Miles 3-7 were 9:45, 10:00 pace. I did an upper body workout yesterday but not today. Feeling good.

I talked with my ex-husband today about running (I began running with him when I was 21). He still runs about 35 miles a week. His fastest marathon was 2:56. I ran 18 miles of another marathon with him, the SF marathon, and I wish I had been able to run the whole way. I hadn't entered the race officially--I was pacing him and planned to drop out, which I did. But I was running a 7:00 pace at the time, and feeling great at 18 miles, when I left the course. That was the 1986 marathon.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - February

Paul & Spareribs - That's right, I read it in the Runnersworld article  http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263-264-12079-0,00.html

It reminded me of the days in soccer when coach had us  sprint from one side of the field to another ala intervals.  With the incline of the hills different muscle groups get worked (as I found out).  I think that strengthening any and all parts of the legs has got to lead to a more balanced and stronger runner.  Besides the anaerobic activity is also to help improve speed.

Tonight was yoglates.  I do this to strengthen core.  Instructor spends a third of the hour on ab work, 1/3 on pilates exercises and rest on yoga (balance and poses).  tonight she did the yoga after the ab work when we were a little fresher, but she would not let us wobbles 'go to the wall'.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - February

Sierra - that's a nice pace for a marathon.  You should have gone on ahead and see if you found a wall in the next 8 miles.

6 ez was the plan tonight but ez must be getting ez-er.  7:15 avg. pace after an 8 min mile warm up.

Sat. is the 10K so we will see what hard and ez are.   Temps have been in low 30's to low 40's every morning for 3 weeks.  Sat for the race the low is to be 65 and 25 mph winds.  Never fails.  Oh well; we all have to run in it.  If I'm lucky I can get in behind a group that will pull me along in the wind.

Wed. 40 minutes of freestyle

Thurs.

I didn't want to go out and run.  I was drained, swimming the night before, long day at work and lordy it was 23 freaking degrees (wind chill 14).  But I went out anyway and did 3.4 in 39 minutes and I felt so good afterwards.  Funny stuff this running.....

P/T said he can't find "anything" wrong with me after our session yesterday.  Now there is a change!!!!

Pool running is fun!  Give it a try.....

Good runs and good day

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - February

I'm still around but have had to stop running again.  I just got back to it today.  I've been doing some serious leg stretches in an effort to get rid of the problem, and it appears to be working.  Today I was hoping to run 5k, but only managed 2.  My hip felt really good as I went out, but I felt a tweak at the first k mark so I returned home.  At least I'm able to sleep in relative comfort these days, but weight is rising quickly.

Good luck with the race!

Good luck KS!

90 minutes of pool running last night. I think the consensus is that XC skiing is more intense, but I think DWR can come in a close second depending on the type of workout you choose. We did intervals last night and worked on rate of turnover. I was also introduced to "screamo" music.

Jacques, I think that when the weather starts to warm up, all those aches and pains that we are now feeling will disappear.

*Pain is just nature's way of saying that winter is a stone cold *****.*X-(

I sure hope so!  After 10 good years of running I'm not happy with the way things are going so far this year.

Better day this morning.  I managed 5 miles at a very easy pace, but it felt good all the way.  Maybe a ski this afternoon if Sweetums is up for it.

My own personal 10K, 6.2 miles in 1:12:52 for an avg 11:42 m/m.  This was a nice run, 44F felt downright balmy, and the sun shining off the potomac was fantasitc.

I found an new half mary in May that I will target.  www.pacersrunningfestival.com

I love running    and it feels so good to be out there again (swimmings not so bad either).

Tomorrows plan is to run 5 or 6 and then swim for 30 min or so.

Good day and good runs....
