Read an intersting article from the Indianapolis Star about the fading position of center.
A label is just a label, but the real problem is that with the disappearance of the position label there is also a disappearance of that particular skill set. A back to the basket post player can still be very effective and in some cases is necessary. If you need proof, I give you Greg Oden. And while he may be busting, the money he got speaks for itself. Name another player in college beyond maybe Blake Griffin who can play like that. It ruins the game and places to strong of an emphasis on the dribble.
Is it quicker, more athletic players that can play mutiple roles? Or is it coaching? Or is it just the ebb and flow of the sport? I think it may be a comination of all three.
There is a great article on Fox Sports main page about the lack of centers in the all-star game. Seems like more big guys want to play like guards and its a shame. Someone who is 6'9 6'10 had such a distinct advantage over a guard becuase they physically are closer to the basket and it makes sense to be on th elow block not luaching three balls.
Also take a look a shaq in his prime. He was dominate and he won where ever he went. He didnt score a bucket outside of three feet. But i must say that is the way the game is going, look at the sixers, they tried to have Brand be that inside presence, and they are better when he is not in the lineup, they are just a better running team than half court, get it down low team.
You're right the game may be evolving, but not enough. Look at the Suns before Shaq arrived. They ran up and down the floor and were exciting, but couldn't win in the post-season when defense and grinding it out reallty matter. A legit post presence is still necessary.
dont forget Bill Cartwright and bill Weddington helped out Jordan.
I do see what you mean though. The past NBA champs have had that inside presence like Tim Duncan, Hakeem with the Rockets, the Pistons with Big Ben Wallace and so on.
Big men leading the league in assists is unheard of this day and age. And ifd the depletion of a real big man goes away it will never happen again. This is so sad. Anyone have a tissue?
