San Clemente Island (San Diego CA) Ultra

Are there any military or federal service employees in the San Diego CA that would be interested in completing an Ultra marathon on San Clemente Island.  If you do not know, San Clemente is an island about 75 miles of the coast of San Diego.  It is an island that is owned and operated by the US Navy as a training island for some unit and range for the surface ships.  The island is very thinly populated with a few major roads that connect the different training area together.  Flights run out of NAS North Island each day to the island and the island has a BOQ/BEQ on it for billeting.   For the event, you would need to fly out the day before, do the run the next day and then fly back the day after.

The proposed run would go from the north end of the island at the air field down the main road, take the coastal trail and then back up to the main road and into the range area.  The race would need to be sked'd on a day when the range was not in use or any exercise.  The conditions would be hard pack trails with some gravel on some parts.  Total distance would be around 50K (33 miles or so).  There would be very little support with maybe one or two water stops along the way.  I have attached two pictures from a recent long run on the island.  It is a very beautiful place, but very desolate.

Cost would be the billeting on the island, galley for food and water purchased for the water stops.  So it would be minimal.  No awards, just beers at the club afterward.

Any takers?  It would be a unique event that would give you a chance to race against no one but yourself to complete the run.  I have tentative approval from the OIC but would need formal approval if I can get some more crazy runners to do this event.

Spencer.
