Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - April

Paul, you may get various answers to your question but I am of the belief that a short, slow recovery run is best on the day after any key workout, and a key workout is a long run or speed workout of any sort.  If you must take days off, take one the day AFTER your recovery run.  You will heal up faster by doing a recovery run first.

Ten miles for me, 8 at easy pace, 2 slow.  Spareribs

Today was 10 miles, about half slow and half easy. I was going to run 8 but took a longer route back to my car. It was breezy and mild--a lot of miles under mature shady oaks, which was really nice. I petered out with 2 miles left but managed to straggle in.

Thanks, S.R. I'm going to take your advice. I don't know all the physiology behind it yet (does anyone, really?), but I trust your dedication and experience.

I ran the NSK&S 10K today and came in at 48:21. Much better than my first 10K which was 54:23. I would have been 10-15 seconds faster had I not momentarily run down the wrong street. The volunteers called me back, though. Also, I was running down main street, downtown, and I saw no runners or volunteers. I was going to turn back. I finally saw a chartreuse shirt, though, and asked him where the course is. I have now learned to study the race course, beforehand. The weather today was awesome! They had good food after the race and I rode the 40 miles home on my bike. A very pleasing and productive day!

I'll do a mile slow tomorrow, S.R.

I fear no race, for I did run the Second Annual Wicked Frosty Four.

That's a nice improvement Paul.  You'll get faster yet.

Fred - Part of the answer must be that the standard is high some just need to surpass it.  Can training make that much difference when they get to that level?

5.75 miles this morning so slow I think I must have stopped for a nap along the way.  With some good running company so it was all good.  Legs appreciated it too.

2 more weeks.  Plan on running just shy of 60 miles this week and then about 40 before the marathon.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - April

Thanks, Euphoric. I appreciate it. Thanks, too, K.S. I think my speedwork and more consistent training combined with warmer temperatures will help my times.., at least until it gets hot again. I'll be doing two more 10K's this year; one in may and one in june and I'd like to be able to come in around forty-seven minutes on one or both.

What makes my result from yesterday's race even more pleasant is that my 10K in February was as flat as a pancake. This one had some small hills.

My next race will be the May Day Race 10K on May third in Dalton, MA. I'm going to camp out for a week or two in a near-by state park.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - April

Fred, I'm inclined to agree with KS. Sometimes these time barriers are nothing more than mental or emotional obstacles, that once surpassed become an expectation.  Look what happened after Bannister broke four minutes in the mile.  Soon afterward lots of people did it.

Paul, steady consitent training over a period of time is bound to give you improvement, so I expect you will do better, but the SAME training over and over, at some point will produce a flattening out of progress.  As you develop your endurance you will want to make slight changes in your training approaches.  Sierra gave you some good advice recently.  Take your time, but always keep your eye on how you might augment your training over a time period.

3.5 slow on the dirt today, followed by a great flex and core workout at the Y.  Spareribs
