Are you spending more or less these days?

I'm curious, with the economy in a slump for a while now, do you find you are spending more or less or maybe even the same for fitness related activities.  Gym memberships, classes, races, gear, clubs, activity related travel, etc.

Several months ago the media started saying that we would spend more on things like comfort food and less on other items, we might consider luxuries.  What do you think?

Re: Are you spending more or less these days?

I'm spending more money this year on events.  It's not necessarily more events but the ones I picked seem to be more expensive (the Chicago Tri & Chicago Marathon are each $100+ and events I didn't do last year).  I've also spent a bit more on stuff - gadgets, gear, etc.  In general, I think people's spending habits are being modified in this economy but I also think that the active-type community would be a little insulated from that.  I would assume that most people around here tend to view events, gym memberships, etc as necessary lifestyle expenses that would be last to go (to a point, obvioulsy some may postpone a marathon in Hawaii until a later date or things like that).  Intersting topic - I'm curious to see what others have to say.

More. I signed up for 2 races that require flights, hotels, car rentals etc. and a fair number of more expensive races this year.  Also purchased some additions and upgrades. (garmin 705, Zipps, training sessions on a computrainer at my LBS, etc....)

Although, last year I bought an expensive tri-bike which I am excluding from the comparison.

Re: Are you spending more or less these days?

I think the economy slump has me spending wisely.  For example, Garmin 305 forerunner is about 300 or so - I purchased this on amazon last Dec. for 159 + s/h.  I've also purchased DRI-FIT material at bargain or sale price.  And on food, I grocery shop every two weeks or less so they won't spoil as quickly.  I also cook more at  home, bring lunch and snacks to work rather than buy them at nearest deli.  As far as races go, I don't register for anything over $25 on 10Ks & 5Ks.  My main even is on the Long Beach International CityBank Marathon in Oct this yr (reg started at $70 + airfair to travel there).

Re: Are you spending more or less these days?

My overall running expenses are up somewhat, relative to last year. Running clothes and race fees are about the same. Virtually almost all my races are local (within 50 miles) so I drive to them and so travel expenses are low. My gym membership is very reasonably priced since it's through a university. However, running shoes are distinctly more expensive - $25 more per pair. I also upgraded my ancient iPod shuffle to a nano when the shuffle died. Hiking expenses are definitely up this year. My son and I decided it was time to upgrade some of our old cheap day hiking gear and also spring for some modest backpacking gear. Also doing a few more National Park hiking trips.

I am definitely spending more on events this year. I'm trying to run races that are local and support great causes. So, whatever I'm spending is going to worthwhile causes, and I'm getting in more races.

I am spending more. I'm doing more events. Unless you are one of the people that have lost their job - I don't see any slump!  But the media just keeps pumping us full of all these negative reports. It just hasn't made any difference to me.

I've been spending more on races, travel, and gear. But then again, the economy hasn't really hurt me. I got a Hybrid and motorcycle to fight the gas prices...only real difference.
