Re: C25K, starting tomorrow.

I started yesterday. I'm 43. Married, working mom, 2 kids. I have NEVER run -- the last time was probably some excrutiating laps around my high school football field during gym class. W1D1 was great. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. My goal is to lose weight (about 20 lbs.) and perhaps, maybe, could I ..... Be A Runner.

Re: C25K, starting tomorrow.

Medstudent2: don't worry about what speed you're going at on the TM, whatever is comfortable for you. When I went through w1d1 the first time, I was going at 3.5-4.0. Now you can see, my speed's ramped up quite a bit. If you go too fast, you'll get discouraged. Especially at the end of week4? Week 5? when you suddenly have to run 2 miles straight. Trust me, my speed will be going down!

Cool! Medstudent, let me know if you're interested in running together sometime.

I'm looking forward to the journey. I'm registering for a 5K in September in Chicago so I'm excited. Just gotta get going.

Re: C25K, starting tomorrow.

Congratulations to everyone trying C25K!  it works - I started running mid-Dec 2008.  Week 3 is the hardest hurdle to get over - but believe me it's worth it.

One word of advice is keep it slow and steady, especially if you have never run before.  I went too fast and got discouraged that I could not run for 10 mins straight.  I'd poop out.  Keep it slow and the time will come...you'll get stronger and stronger everyday.

I have since run 3 5Ks - my first was April 11, then May 2, May 30 and now June 7th....so you see how you can get the BUG!   I found Gateway to 5K, 8K and 10K on iTunes podcasts to be good too and I use those now...but I did use C25K for the training.  So find your groove and go for it!!!

Re: C25K, starting tomorrow.

I want to welcome everyone else that is starting - it seems like we have a pretty good group all getting moving at the same time...and there seems to be a lot of great support here so thanks!

Hey Jodi is going to run...did you run - how is that headcold...thanks for sharing the following:

I also was given advise from someone else and like to pass this on "To run farther you must run slower, to run faster you must run farther"

I have to remind myself there is no shame in a slow pace; i can always work on moving faster later...the goal for now is just to....FINISH - to run something the whole way thru.

I just did W1D2 and felt pretty good the whole way thru...i am only doing the running part at 4.6 - that is all i can manage for now...i am afraid if i go any faster that i will croak when i have to run farther/longer...as it is i may have to slow it down a tenth or two...but again, my goal right now is just to run consistently and the whole way...if i have to slow it down, i will - whatever it takes to just run the whole way...lol - i don't know what that pace will be but time will tell...

Hope everyone got their runs in and is feeling good!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ann

Re: C25K, starting tomorrow.

Thanks for the support Ann!

Where are you going to school?  I am a nurse, I went to MIchigan.  It must be hard to be in nursing school with kids, I thought it was killer without any kids!

I start W2 D1 tomorrow, I will let you know how it goes.  I have been using my elliptical or riding my bike on non-running days, but today I tried a work out video that was recommended: Jillian Michaels 30 day shred.   I had no idea how out of shape I really am, that lady is tough and she kicked my butt, or more accurately my arms.  There are 3 different workouts on the video and I did the first (easiest) one.  I think I will try to use the video 1-2 days per week. I figure anything that tough must get results.

Keep up the good work and keep me posted on your progress!

Re: C25K, starting tomorrow.

This group seems to be very active and as a "mod" here I just wanted to bring to peoples attention that with the merging of Coolrunning and Active Running forums into one they have created a new C25K forum. So far nobody has posted there. The idea they have is to use Newbie's as a New Runner Cafe' and the C25K forum for people going through the program. I am not sure if you guys want to move over to that forum or stay here. PLEASE don't get me wrong. I am NOT saying you can not post here until after C25K or anything like that. Wherever feels more like home to you stick with it. I really think the strength of C25K being a success all these years has been the community that develops and virtually does the program together.

For what it is worth I am not an Active employee and have no affiliation with them outside of doing C25K myself and wanting to give back to the running community that started me off.

Mike

I think we have a good thing going, I don't really want to switch to a new site. It seems like we might lose some of our posters if we do that.... any one else have thoughts on this?

Re: C25K, starting tomorrow.

Hey IBmotivated - I go to a county college in NJ; it is known for having a really good program even tho it is a county college... re kids and Nursing Clinicals - I have heard that clinicals are rough and once I am done with the summer class i am currently taking, I plan on spending the rest of the summer 'simplifying' my life - lol - as much as is possible so that I will not have to focus much beyond my son and school in the fall...that's also why I am doing this running program now - i would like to have 'trying to be a runner - part I' done before clinicals start as I feel that running will wind up being a good stress outlet - which again, from the sounds of it, I think I am going to need...one of the really good things these days is that lectures are available on podcasts so I won't have any real excuse for not being able to run...can I ask what kind of nursing you do? I get asked all the time what kind of nursing I want to do and I don't have an answer - I have an idea or two but I am just really trying to keep an open mind until I have been exposed to more - for me it is too early to make a decision like that...like as a parent I sit there and think that I would really not want to be a Peds nurse because it is hard to see a child in pain - but who knows - I may get in there and decide I love it...am wondering what your experience with that is like...

Also - Jillian Michael's 30 day shred - it is funny you mentioned that because last nite I decided that I would try to do that on my days not doing C25k...I just recently got it and it IS a real butt buster - i can see myself doing the easiest level for awhile...between the 2 of these, i have my work cut out for me for the summer...but it's alllllll goooood....oh and my son got Wii Fitness the other day and I want to try that too - he also got that EA Sports Active - so I have got plenty to keep me out of trouble - at least for a while...Ann

Thanks guys!

Mike and the others in our group: re the other boards--what do you guys think about moving the whole thread? I know I subscribe to the thread, so I get emails with a link to the thread. It wouldn't really change things for me, I don't think. Ideas?
