Re: June - 50 Plus Training and Racing

This site still lacks integrity.  I've been trying to re find us again for a day and a half.  The website kept reading "this community doesn't exist'.    I thought maybe I had died!

Again, nice racing Roch.

Ribz - hope you can get back to those 20 min 5k's.   I think you can if you desire to.

Went to the dentist for a temporary crown this morning.  The dentist commented that I broke half the tooth off and therefore did half his job for him.   He declined my offer of me just paying half price.  Instead he thought he might just double it.      Too hot by then to run much but got in 5 miles at 7:50 pace.

Those boxers are quick!

Rich, good luck on your half!

Rochrunner, we must  have been typing at the same time. It is amazing how fast we can lose fitness, I took May off almost entirely, and ran a 10k in 49:55 on May 31st. It was hilly, and a slightly less than 100% effort as I did not want to injure myself, but still pretty slow.

Lauren I spoke to in-laws from Florida last week, the economy in the US seems to have suffered much more than here in Canada. More exposure to high risk loans in the US I suppose. He used the expression NINJA loans, i.e. to people with No Income No Job and No Assets. (What were the bankers thinking?)  A pontiac dealer in my town will be closing after 52 years in business.

Sorry I am so chatty today. Simon.

Re: June - 50 Plus Training and Racing

Ran my typical Wed 10 miles of hills again today.   Last couple weeks legs have come around and I have decided I need more quality this training cycle so I was a bit lethargic starting out this morning.  Around 4.5 miles I finally felt like running.  Avg pace 7:43 which is the fast side of my "easy" pace for flat running so I'm pretty happy running this pace in the hills today.   Seemed hard to get any oxygen this morning in this high humidity as well.  Shoes now drying in front of a fan.  Def. summer here now.  High yesterday broke a record and hit 96 degrees.   Just wait till summer gets here!!

Hope you all have good runs today.  And Ribz is going to have two runs today.

Re: June - 50 Plus Training and Racing

Roch, I can sure see why you were excited.  That was a great effort.

KS, thanks.  Believe me the desire is there and I am doing the work too.  It's just coming more slowly than I had first thought.

Cut my track workout short this morning because I had to lead a small group at my local running store for National Run Day.  So I did my 2 mile warmup, then 4 x 1000 meters (200 jog rest) at just under 5 minutes each and then just for fun I kicked one final 200 at what was all-out for me, so I could see what has happened to my leg speed, or turnover.  But I did it in 38 seconds and that is all I wanted to do because it is a different pace for me and I didn't want to risk an injury running fast while tired.  I can build on these going forward of course and that is what I will do, mostly because during the last 40 meters I felt my form going all to ****.

So I didn't cool down, but went home and changed into dry stuff and led this group off on a 4 miler, and instead of newbies it was all top triathletes hoping to support the event.  The woman I ran with has done 9 Ironmans including Kona and I had a **** of a time keeping up, because by that time it was hot and humid, like KS' weather.

9 miles for the day, a good day.  Learned a lot.   Spareribs

Re: June - 50 Plus Training and Racing

Simon, talk away, please. I enjoy it, as I'm sure others here do as well. The thought I had when running past the empty car dealerships was about our economy as well.

Ribs, that sounds like an enjoyable 9 mile day.

Fred, thanks for posting that link to past coolrunning posts (with Tinman and others). An interesting discussion. In my 20s and 30s it was all seat-of-the-pants training for me.  I didn't read up (no Internet then) on various training strategies-I did incorporate interval workouts and LSD. It was a little bit of everything, I think, done out of ignorance, really, whatever felt right. I don't think I trained for speed as well as I could have. I didn't measure my heart rate, for instance, at least not while running (only after I finished). Food for thought-now, I'm thinking of looking up some of these folks.

4 miles yestersday, easy, at work at noon along city streets (the quiet ones, in an industrial area). So, 18.3 miles so far this week. I felt OK--I'm not pushing it, and intentionally going slower than I could run.  I want to feel comfortable at a certain mileage per week before I run faster on daily runs. I might do a speed session tomorrow at the track, or a 7-8 mile run instead. This whole week I've had to run at work to save time in the afternoons to do some things at home, which necessarily cuts short the runs. I took a rest day today and walked three miles.

Good evening all.

Re: June - 50 Plus Training and Racing

Thanks, Lauren.  Two years ago I read a couple of books on training methods, and a lot of stuff on the internet, and thought I knew quite a lot about it! Everyone's an "expert" at that stage!Life has become more complicated since then...

Now the number of different theories seems overwhelming. I have reached the conclusion that what works best for one individual is not necessarily best for another, even if they are training for the same distance.

Thanks, Fred, for the links about de Castello's training,  Seems he was not an advocate of lots of easy miles. I am currently following (loosely) Pfitzinger's  marathon plan peaking at 55 miles, though I am training for a half. I am surprised by the amount of fast running, possibly this is too advanced for someone at my fitness level/age, or perhaps this is the way forward. If I train as I did last time I may end up with the same result? What do you all think?

Fred, do you live in Windsor? Not sure where i got that impression, but I know there is high unemployment in that area now. Simon.

Re: June - 50 Plus Training and Racing

Wednesday's double workout left my knees with a bit of a twinge, nothing to worry about, but I was tired too, so the past two days have been 4.5 and 3.3 slow.  Did a good flex and core workout today at the Y after my run.

We watched a terrific movie last night we got from Netflix.  For all of you who feel like you are always battling against the relentless aging process, here is a movie to make you look forward to being 80!  Check out this movie trailer for the film Young@Heart.  These folks are singing Coldplay and the Ramones and having a ball.  It is a great film.

I don't know why the dentist didn't accept your half-price offer, KS. Sounds fair to me

I've heard about that movie, Ribs. I'll have to put it on my Netflix account.

6 miles yesterday60 minutes. My dog ran with me for four and a half. There was a family on the track3 sisters playing while their mom and a friend walked. They took a liking to my dog, Cody, which was fun.  One of the girls--a cutie who was about six years old, came out to the middle of the track and said, "Can I pet your dog." So, I stopped a few times to let them pet Cody. They were there again today when I tried to go out for run.

I have severe pain in my upper right hip, above the thigh. It was mild about a week ago -- and I didn't notice it too much when I ran -- but yesterday it was difficult to run the last mile or so. Not good. I've never had this before--I was tired today anyway so skipping the run felt right. Tomorrow, I'll see how the hip feels when I run. I've done a few stretches that I've read might help. Strange. I don't know what brought it on.
