Had popping in my foot today!?

So today I finished my 2nd 5k, beat my last 5k time, and finished 3rd in my age group!! However when I had approximately 1/10th of a mile left to the finish line I felt a very big pop in the arch down to middle of the bottom of my foot, followed my a burning pain, and then a second pop. Now I can't walk on it, or apply pressure. Does not hurt when I am off of it, but the bottom of my foot is slightly bruised. I have never experienced this before, and am wondering if anyone may know what it could be, and what is the best way to treat it. I figured I would obviously take a few days of, stretch it several times a day, and use heat/ice, and take ibuprofen. Just really curious as to what the **** happened, and what caused it??!!

Thanks for any advice and info...

KEEP ON RUNNING!! Carey

Ice and ibuprofen OK, I don't think I'd stretch it. I'm not sure what it is (could be a couple things), but a visit to the doctor may be in order.

The "pop" is what would worry me. You may have torn something. My first thought in that part of the foot is the plantar fascia, but there are other possibilities that I'm less familiar with. Anyway, that's why I suggested the doctor.

Ouch, that sounds bad.  You might have a sprain in your midfoot/arch. Your arch might have collapsed (popped out)

Well lets see what the doctor says but I do not think you will be running or racing for a while.  Let us know what the diagnosis is.

If it is indeed a rupture of the plantar fascia, odds are that you will be grounded for a while but recovery should then be complete. Check out this article from the American Journal of Sports Medicine  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15090382   From the article: "...All patients returned to activity after 2 to 26 weeks (mean, 9.1 +/- 6.0 weeks). Running athletes predominantly composed the cohort...Using the treatment protocol, patients sustaining plantar fascia rupture can achieve favorable results with complete return to activity. None of the 18 patients sustained reinjury..."

P. S. The authors are from the Palo Alto (CA) Medical Foundation's Department of Sports Medicine. I used to live in Palo Alto and am familiar with the organization; they're highly competent.

Not necessarily what you wanted to hear but the prognosis seems good. We will all await your triumphant return to running. I haven't heard of those inserts but there are a lot of them on the market. Take care.
