Last Sunday, 6/21 -- the Golden Gate 5K. You can check out the reviews of the race on Active and get a better idea of what the "not really a race" was all about. Wanted to get the message out there to all athletes that might get duped into paying a registration fee to these frauds for a simple "club run". This particular race was completely a renegade race - no athlete support (the advertised to provide water, free parking, prizes, etc...); no proper official time (notepad and a cellphone timer). They are advertising several upcoming NorCal races -- Muir Woods, Jack London and even more at the Golden Gate Bridge. I have called these places and found that they do not have proper permits and plans in place to host events at these locations - at least not as of yesterday. And they certainly didn't have a permit for the race last sunday on the Golden Gate bridge.

wow, wish i'd seen these postings a week ago before i signed my son and his friend up for the race at muir woods. we left a perfectly good vacation at lake tahoe to get to this race. it was 30 minutes after registration closed that the race was cancelled and our entry money gone.

is there a way to help active.com know that they are sponsoring this ripoff?
I have sent NUMEROUS emails and support tickets to Active about this. I would suggest contacting Rich Weideman at theGolden Gate Park Management office. I contacted Muir woods about this planned event and found out NO permits had been created for this event. His number is (415) 561-4730.
Please do contact them. I am going back through my phone list today and calling the parks to let them know that MOVFitness is still scamming using the Park service and Active.com as a front for fraud.

I just got off the phone with Active.com - if you do decide to call in - its a phone tree - choose 2, then 3, then sit on hold, then ask for Client support.
what was active's response?
they will be investigating it. The Client Support guy I talked to (Chris I think) said he was handing over to the Account Manager. I didn't ask for his name - yet - I will see if this continues, then call back. as an event sponsor for cycling events in the norcal area, stuff like this infuriates me.
i live in boulder. a couple of years ago some guy here was doing this same stuff for triathlons. he's in jail now.
Jail - AWESOME! That's where I want to see this guy. How did it go down? I think I'll call the DAs office as well.

guy advertises triathlons, takes entry fees, and sponsor money, makes no effort to put on event, keeps entry fees and sponsor money, general public outcry, the DA gets involved, police find and arrest guy, many of those that got ripped off show up in court, during trial it's discovered that guy has a history of skethcy stuff, guy is found guilty and guy goes to jail.
at what point does this become an internet crime (http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx)? i'm not sure that this is a local issue. mr hackney has another non-event planned for central park in nyc this weekend ...

Can we take this to mean you have PERMITS for all of your activities? Last time I talked to Piedmont Park in Atlanta, GGB in SF, Jack London in Sonoma, and John Muir Park, you did not. While I can appreciate that you want to make good and refund the money you wrongly took, the fact that we have yet to see any permits makes us all leary of your real intent.
Until I can see that you have permits and are running LEGAL funcitons, I will continue to persue legal avenues to have your events cease.

For anyone new reading this thread - MOVFitness continues to produce "non-race events" - just do a search and you'll see they have had at least 3 recent NO-SHOW events in the last 3 weeks (Muir Woods, Golden Gate Park and Torrey Pines). This is not an argument of whether the event is or is not what the athlete expected it to be - the event does not even take place! No one from your organization shows up. Read the reviews people.
Whether MOVFitness is, or is not, refunding registration money after the fact, Mr. Hacknesy is still taking the registration money up front for events that they do not have! He is wasting all our valuable time.
