Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Wow, Erin, I really hope you keep up that work-out schedule, because you'll surely be an inspiration to many of us. I would love to get to the point where I'm working out as frequently as you are. As for me, I'm taking this running program quite literally and am unfortunately actually starting from the "couch" part of the C25K. Like FlyShopGirl, I am hoping to lose the 40 pounds I've gained.

MLPQ- So far, I'm running outdoors, so I can't answer your treadmill question. I'm hoping to join the ymca in a few weeks, though, so I'm looking forward to hearing how it works out for you.

KaraJoy - I take long walks with my little one sometimes, but the weather here is funky so I'm not able to make it on each of my "off" days. In terms of resting the muscles, I seem to remember that the important thing is to rest the muscle group you worked on last. So for instance, if you ran one day, then the next day, you might want to focus more on upper body work, like rowing for example, kwim?

Terrie - I used to run when I was going to grad school in Louisiana, so I totally know what you're going up against. Between the heat and humidity of Texas, you will be in some seriously great shape if you can stick it out. Northern MN is great in the summer, but I'll surely be envious of your weather come November. We literally have snow and ice on the ground every day from late Nov through April and it rarely gets above 0 degrees. It's arctic up here, which is why I'll be joining the Y soon.

Hi to everyone else!

I'm going to do day2 tonight after I put my little one to bed.

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Erin - Wow!  You do have a busy workout schedule!  I bet it makes your body feel great.

4babes - sounds like a great book!  I might want to check it out too.... since I'm becoming a runner and all now...

Julie - how great that you already ran one 5k.  How was it?

Sophita - I'm quite literally the couch part too and also hoping to lose weight.  Ideally I could lose 50lbs, but will be happy with every little bit.  Mostly I just really want to be fit again!  (I was very active up until a whopping ten years ago.)

I'm feeling great today and not much soreness so glad I'm starting slow.  I'm thinking I'm going to try to do yoga at least one or two of the off days weekly (I have a one hour yoga dvd) and then I want to do situps and pushups and maybe look up some more upper body work that I can do at home without equipment.  Let me know if any of you have any good links for those.

Keep up the good work everyone!

KaraJoy

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Hi everyone!  I completed W1D1 and it went really well!  The treadmill at work is good for me now, but I hope to bring my running outdoors when I feel more comfortable with myself!  I'm happy that you are all in the same early stages of this running program like me!  I look forward to reading about all of our progress over these summer days!

I just ran my first 5k yesterday  (31:07) after completing the C25k program. Stick with it. You can do it! I don't consider myself a runner either. I ran track in

junior high, but that was it! The program really works. You can do it!

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

I started today.  This is my 3rd of 4th time starting the C25K in the past 5 years.  I successfully completed it my senior year of college and for some reason let it get away from me.   I have tons of reasons to get in shape and get moving and only a couple to not, so hopefully I can stick with this.  I am using the C25K application on my iphone and love it!

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

I just finished W1D2 as well. My shins were burning by the second set so I had to walk a little longer and stop a few times in order to cool them down enough to continue running. I went ahead and added on a few more sets at the end, though, so I ended up doing a total of 7 rounds instead of 5 to help make up the difference. After posting this I'm going to do some googling about exercises for shins. If anyone knows about shin splints and how to reduce them, please let me know.

4babes - I'm also going to check out that book. Maybe, if I'm lucky, they will have a copy at my local library.

Happy running everyone!

Mo - Most of my run is on pavement, but there's a short stretch of wooden walkway along the lakewalk. I definitely felt a difference running on the wood, it was so much better!  Thanks for the sock tip. I'll try that tonight

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Good for you. My wife and I did the C25K in January and it has been one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I've never been an athlete but by sticking to the plan I've not only run a 5K, but just did my first 10K last weekend. Stick with it - your first 5K finish line will make all your hard work worth it!

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

I completed the first day of c25k with KaraJoy (my good friend and wife) on Sunday as she noted and I'm really looking forward to the program.  Like many here I was an athlete in H.S. and College (Track and Football), however I've let things slip away and I'm in my mid 30's now!  I need to lose about 50 pounds and would like to get off my bum and get moving.  I'm commited to finishing this program no matter the length of time.

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Hi all-

What do you all do on the days of the week you don't run?  If this rain ever lets up here in Buffalo, I think I'll walk the dogs on those days.  Also, I've started this 100 pushup program on the opposite days...anyone ever tried it?  I'm really into the idea of workouts that don't require equipment which is why I want to get into running and pushups!

Also, quick question about the pod(cast?).  I am completely ignorant to the world of Ipods, howeve I do like what I've read about using music to keep track of the running rather than time.  Is there a certain ipod that would work best for running?  Also, does it cost a lot to download the music for the running program?

Happy running!

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Good morning.  I just finished my 30 minutes of weights.  Feeling good.  Plus I did my crunches.  I am SO excited to start w2d1 tomorrow!  I hope I am still this pumped tomorrow when I go to do it    LOL!

mlpq ~ I had never heard of the 100 push up challenge.  Very neat!  I do some 'weight training' on my days off (except I have 1 complete day off).  I really like the idea of being able to do more push ups so I might try that too.  I think it sounds like a great idea!

KaraJoy ~ I am following the "body for life" weight training plan.  http://bodyforlife.com/exercise/weighttraining.asp

Sophitia ~ Congrats on finishing w1d2!!!

MegannT ~ WOW!!  Congratulations on your first 5K!  That is awesome!!!

goalgazer ~ Great job finishing w1d2!!  I am very nervous about running in a 5K too.  Hopefully I will gain some confidence each week as I move through the c25k program!

I hope you all have a great day!!
