Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

I am so encouraged!  I was getting nervous about today (W2D1) but again, it went smoothly!  I read (I think in that book I mentioned) that concrete is the worst surface to run on and even asphalt is a little softer but I realized the streets in our neighborhood are all concrete. Hmph.  I tried running in the grass alongside the sidewalk but it was all wet because of sprinklers.  I'm not really comfortable leaving the neighborhood yet... we just moved here a month ago and I don't know the area.

I'm curious about what those of you that run first thing in the morning eat before you head out?  This morning I had half a Fiber One bar and a small glass of OJ.  It seemed to be fine... wondering how it will be once the running starts picking up.

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

hey everyone, i'm starting this today!  i did this back in november, but only got to week 5 or 6, and then there was too much snow/ice outside for a while so i didn't run and eventually gave up on it during the winter.  i've been meaning to get back to this since the spring, and well today is the day!  i got nike+ shoes and an iphone 3gs and tested it last night and it works awesome.  i just need to find a case or something for the iphone when i'm running with it.  anyone else use their iphone?

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Kara- my 5K went a lot better than I thought.  I had only been training for the 5K for about 2 weeks so I was surprised that I was able to run pretty much the whole way.  My time was 30:00, so I was very happy with that.  It was a flat course though and the next one has hills

I took a rest day yesterday- so I have to run today!!  I don't run in the morning because they are doing construction on the road in front of my house.  I prefer to run at night, but I don't want to trip- we don't have a lot of street lights. I run right after dinner.

I am also doing a Yoga program.  I have a Yoga DVD that I do on my non-run days.  It is great because it builds strength and it helps me be more flexible.  It also helps to make sure I am in alignment.  When I first started doing the Yoga my ankle really hurt, but now that it is at the right angle it doesn't hurt.

cheers!

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Julie & Kara - Which yoga dvds are you using?

Welcome KaraJoy's husband (AllGreen) - Now, if only I can get my man to start posting...

Welcome DaytonFlyer - I'll have to look into music apps soon. I'm going to be buying a sports watch this week, so that will be my big purchase for now.

Welcome DMB- sounds like you and I are in the same boat during the winter. I attribute the relentless winters and having a baby to my weight gain. Do you think you might be able to join a gym, so the winter isn't such a burden?

MLPQ - Well, I just started the program, so who knows what I'll actually end up doing, but I imagine I'll mostly limit myself to long walks with my little one, which is what I do anyways. Weather permitting of course. Now, if I get a good yoga dvd, I'll probably end up doing that on off days. I'm also planning to join the Y in a few weeks, so I'll surely have more exercise opportunities then.

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Well I finally got off my big rear end to begin the C25K today. I got the app for my iPhone and I must say I felt a bit like Pavlov's dogs for some of it. While I was running I couldnt wait for the little bells, and when I was walking I dreaded them.

But I got through day 1 and I honeslty feel pretty good overall. I was on the track team in high school but that was 20 years ago, plus I was a jumper and sprinter. I always said I would only run if chased but I am determined.

Anyway, hope to get some encouragement and give some as well.

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

hi Goalgazer...I started the program tonight and I am SO glad that you posted.  I am as nonathletic as they come and I am excited about this new endeavor for myself.  I am hoping to get more "fit" and hope to have an overall better quality of life.  Lots of luck to you!

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

I started w1d1 on 6/28.  I'm pretty overweight and have recently been in a weight loss program where I've lost almost 50 pounds.  I figured it was time to start a good workout program and someone else in the same program as me recommended the c25k program.

Day one was rough.  I've never voluntarily run anywhere.  Ever.  LOL  So I was able to make it through 2 running segments and walked the rest of the time.  Tonight when I went out for day 2, I ran 4 running segments so I'm excited to be making progress!  I wasn't sure my thighs were going to let me get through day 2, but once I got started, they loosened up and I was fine.  I'm thinking I might have to repeat week 1 again next week before I can move on to week 2, but I'm not going to give up!

I am sure I would not be able to make it through without some wonderful podcasts I found and downloaded.  It's so great because I just put them on my iPod and push play.  They tell me exactly when I need to run and when I need to walk and have some really great "get out there and move" music to keep me going!

I'm looking toward a local 5k race in mid September. Even if I haven't progressed through the entire 9 week program by then I should be able to run most of it by then which is something I never would have thought was possible before I learned about this program.  I'm excited to see how it goes and also excited to have found a group of people who are just getting started at the same time I am!

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

It's great to hear updates from everyone!  Keep up the great work!

I do a yoga dvd by Brenda Strong, but there are also some free yoga programs you can find online too.  I have used a free podcast I found online too.

I'm frustrated because I have a sinus infection. I have them a lot and I'm having sinus surgery in August that will hopefully help.  But for now I'm feeling really bad and can't breathe through my nose at all.  So I'm wondering if I should go ahead and do W1D2 tomorrow.  Or if I should wait at least a couple days and get better first.  What would you do?

Thanks for any input!

Hi Sophitia, yeah i could join a gym in the winter, but i really hate running on the treadmill...i guess i'll have to sacrifice.  day 1 went really well today.  i'm loving the nike+.  i just need an armband for my iphone, which i ordered tonight.  hopefully it will be shipped here by next week.  it really sucks holding the phone while running.

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Thats great info about the podcast. Yesterday I completed W1D2 and was so concerned about watching my clock to make sure I wasnt't cheating.  Still having lots of pain with shin splints. Everthing I read says the calves are stronger than the shins and it will get better. Any suggestions out there?  New shoes are on the way!

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

I did W2D1 this morning, followed by 450 crunches.  It went great and I feel great!!

How is everyone else doing today??

4babes ~ Congrats on doing w2d1 yesterday!!  I eat a bowl of raisin bran (I put milk in it and let it sit for 45 seconds or so and then drain the milk) with a glass of water.  I am not a juice (or milk) person so water is what I drink of a morning.

dmb499 ~ Congrats on finishing day 1!  The nike+ sounds really neat!

AbChao ~ YAY!!!!  That is great that you finished w1d1!!  Great job!!!

LiLiJoy ~ Congratulations on the weight loss!!

KaraJoy ~ Oh no, I'm sorry to hear about the sinus infection.

maggieq ~ What kind of shoes did you get?

I am off to do laundry, clean the house, play with the kids, fix lunch...

I hope everyone has a great day.

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Thanks lovelife4!

dmb499 - I have an iPhone, not the 3Gs though so no Nike+ for me. I got a Garmin armstrap for it but found that it tends to lower the volume once in place if I take the phone out of the normal case, but I just kept it in its normal case and that fixed it fine, bit tighter fit but it worked! And the C25K from Alex Stanyovik is awesome for tracking all your intervals and listening to your own music. Though I am tempted to do the podcasts so I can use the Runkeeper App instead.

Re: First Day of C25K June 27th

Hi- I'm pretty happy- I just ran/walked 3 miles in the HEAT!  My HR was average 128 up from 118- so I am happy.

The Yoga I do is Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss with Suzanne Deason.  It is a little slower and has different levels for beginners to advanced.  It lasts about 45 minutes and is a lot of twists and strengthening of the spine.

The other one is Sun Salutations with Shiva Rea.  This one is more traditional and more "challenging".  The programs are a little shorter than 45 minutes, but there are 6 different programs to choose from.

I am going out of town this weekend and will have a challenge finding workouts while I am away.  I guess I will map a route and take it with me.
