I'm trying to pick a fall tri and am stuck between two options.  One is USAT sanctioned and the other is not.  The non-USAT event sounds more fun, but is it a bad thing that it is not USAT sanctioned?

    Re: USAT
depends on the race.  but I have raced some good non USAT races in the past and some sucky ones too (but same can be said of some USAT races).  think the biggest thing is no USAT insurance in case of an accident on raceday

    goals for 2011:

    break 19minutes for 5k

break 2:42 for olympic triathlon probably Anthracite olympic

break 3:16 for marathon ( a long shot but it's fun putting yourself out there)

I've raced both and have not seen a difference.

    Re: USAT

This is what USAT says about sanctioning on its web site

    "What is Sanctioning?
The term "sanction" refers to the approval of a multisport event which means the following:

    • The course is well-planned and documented local permits have been obtained.
    • The event safety plan has been carefully reviewed by the experienced staff at USA Triathlon.
    • Proper insurance coverage, including general liability and athlete excess medical, is in place.
    • All participants will be either annual members of USAT or one-day license holders.
    • The results (adult triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon races only) will be scored in the annual national rankings.

What are the BENEFITS of sanctioning?

    • An affordable, comprehensive insurance program to protect the race director, event volunteers, athletes and sponsors.
    • Inclusion in the USA Triathlon National Ranking System, which ranks athletes across the nation.
    • Access to professional USA Triathlon Officials who are trained to ensure that each sanctioned event is safe and fair for competitors.
    • Access to the USA Triathlon membership mailing list containing over 105K possible participants, at an unbelievably discounted price.
    • Access to great sponsor programs and benefits.
    • Participants will recognize the event as a safe and fair race.
    • Outstanding exposure through the USAT Event Calendar.  "
