Here in the Detroit area, even though I'm
gender compromised, I started a women's ride on Monday evenings which
serves well as a cool down/recovery ride for the racer types and a nice
"learn to" ride for some newer riders or riders with a recreational
bent. 6:30 pm start times from Barnum Park in Birmingham, MI is a
convenient location for many. We go about 16 to 23 miles depending on
weather and sunset times and with some newspaper coverage in the
Detroit Free Press we've had up to 60 riders join in. I suggest this in
other communities as there has been a great demand for this ride. Many
women don't know where to go and need some first time instruction and
support. We usually do a modest clinic at the start and a yoga/stretch
cool down at the finish.
In addition we created a yahoo group, o2WomensRide@yahoogroups.com,
which has served well for the participants to send out notices of other
rides they are doing at local parks or women's bikes for sale and so
on!
