Calorie restrictive (CR) diet and running...

I just started reading into this CR movement - pretty strong evidence that the societies on Earth that are known for healthy, productive longevity have this in common - they consume far fewer calories than we do here in the USA.  Obviously, as a runner training for my first marathon, it is dangerous and counterproductive to not fuel my body properly. Is it possible to successfully train for a marathon (or even a half), averaging less than 2000 calories per day (6'2" male)?

Ultimately, the reason I started running a few years ago was to be healthier and thinner.  Are any of you experienced in balancing strict calorie restriction and heavy training?

Yes - I trained for 3 half marathons and currently training for a full - I lost a lot of weight

I`m running 4 times a week, cross training twice a week, weight lifting ( seriously ) 3 times a week and I do about 2 hours a week core training - I eat about 1700 cals a day - before I started the marathon I was pretty much doing the same training but not running as many miles to training for the halfs I was eating 1250 - 1500 cals a day - You can fuel your body properly but I think it takes quite a bit of knowlege to get it right - I had a my diet plan developed by a natural body builder -   if anyone knows how to work out hard and diet those guys do ! I actually feel great and my running is improving

Re: Calorie restrictive (CR) diet and running...

That is a great questions.  I am training for my first half and then a full a few months later.  I am seeing a personal trainer to help me lose weight (I am about 30 lbs overweight).  He has me on a strict diet of about 1200 calories a day.  He knows about my marathon training but has been a competative weightlifter his whole life.  I was worried about not having enough calories while being on this diet and training for a half and a full marathon.  A friend of mine who has completed several marathons and other distance events said that this diet is not appropriate for my marathon training, which really scared me.  Thoughts?

A daily meal plan for me consists of:

7:30- 1 egg and 2 pieces of wheat toast

9:30- 1 serving of fruit

11:30- 4 oz lean protien (usually chicken), 1 cup of veggies, 6 oz of carbs

3:30- 1 serving of fruit

6:30- 6 oz of lean protien, 1/2 cup of veggies

9:30- 1 container of fat free yogurt (with or without fruit)

Now, if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing.  You have to make the mind run the body.  Never let the body tell the mind what to do.  The body will always give up.  It is always tired in the morning, noon, and night.  But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.
