OK, so I'm going to buy a Heart Rate Monitor......

So I've decided to buy a heart rate monitor and I have a couple of questions, any response to any of the following would be greatly appreciated.
1) Is the software that comes with these things really helpful? or would I be fine just looking at my watch as I'm running? I'm kind of a nerd when it comes to this stuff so if it's helpful I think I might like it. Is this something I could track in a spreadsheet just as effectively?
2) I have a Mac, are there any monitors that are more or less mac compatible? Seen problems with Polar on some reviews??
3) Any reccomendations for brands (trying to keep cost down)?
Thanks,
Train Hard!

My Triathlon Training Blog
I have the Garmin Forerunner 305 and love it. I wanted a heartrate monitor, but love the GPS aspects of it even more. Once I was able to see how fast I was going, it was much easier to increase speed.
I know a lot of folks are turned off by the foot pod, but I have a Forerunner 50--relatively cheap and I like the size on my wrist better than the Forerunner 305. Plus you can wear the wrist unit for the swim. I still am not brave enough to wear the HR monitor on the swim, but I have seen some folks do it and get away with it. I also have the optional bike sensor, so I am able (with a little manipulation) to record my times (and other data) for all three disciplines.
Oh--and it comes with software that automatically downloads the data (online and on your hard drive) and offers some basic analysis. Can't speak to Mac compatibility
