Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

Wow, Jess, hiking 4 days a week, wish I could do that. I'm a beginner hiker. We're going hiking Sunday for about 4 hours. I'm excited but a bit apprehensive - I've never hiked in this cool/cold of weather before and didn't have the proper clothing so had to go out and buy some. What you said about getting enough calories with all of the new physical activity made me think. Before I went hiking last week I ate a slice of bread with peanut butter and a bowl of oatmeal, or so I thought. When I got home, the oatmeal was still sitting on my counter! I can't believe I forgot to eat it! I won't make that mistake again.

Last night I did W2D1 - increasing the running to 90 seconds was noticable but doable. It was a great workout for me. I've been running on my treadmill and think when I get to W2D3 on Saturday I'll run outside. I finally found my MP3 player last night and will download the C25K podcast to it.

I'm just so excited that I found this program and this website. I can't believe that I'm becoming a runner at the age of 54! I can't wait to go running with my daughter (she's a personal trainer) in the future. Maybe we'll run our first 5k together, if she doesn't decide to run one before I'm ready. My daughters don't really know that I'm doing this. They would be supportive, but would just assume (and rightfully so) that I would quit since that's what I've done in the past with every exercise regimen I've started. But I won't quit this, it feels so good to run. Besides, my health depends on it. I want to keep the Asthma from getting worse. I don't need to lose weight, although maybe a few pounds wouldn't be a bad thing  ;-)

    Have a great day evereyone!

    Good Morning Ladies!

I completed W1D2 with a great run yesterday and will do W1D3 tomorrow. I think I may add a day and do a W1D4 run sometime this weekend before going on to W2D1! This is so much fun!

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

First, Happy Birthday!  Can you explain the C25K?  My husband and daughter signed me up for the Urbanathon in Chicago this past October.  I had never ran a day in my life.  Began training in June with a walk run then worked up to running 1/4 mile and then to a mile til I finally made it to 4 miles.  We are trying to compete in a 5 k monthly.  I need a goal. And yes, I am over 50, 52 to be exact!

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

C25K= Couch to 5 K, it is a program designed to get a couch potato to a 5 k race in about 9 weeks. If you look at this site, http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml  you will find the schedule. If your already able to do a 5 k race, there are other sites that will help with increasing distance and improving your times. c25k is a beginners program. I'm over 55, never ran before in my life, and am working on week 5, still struggling a bit but working thru it.

Jess! What an inspiration you are! YOU GO GIRL!!!

I cannot imagine being able to run 3 miles without walking part of the way, but I WILL make it to that point if it takes me until next Spring! LOL

I will be thinking about you and your 5K on Thanksgiving day and giving you a Hi 5 along the way!

I have signed up for a 5K on the 5th of Dec called the Jingle Bell Run. The 5K is a run, but it says that you can walk/run, so I will run as much as I can and walk in between. At least I will be participating and I may even get the 5K bug!

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

Jess, Congratulations for making it to the finish line! Such an awesome accomplishment! Mimi, you too!

I echo all the other posts - I started C25K in June and struggled through the hot and humid summer - my number one accomplishment - I remember checking weather.com every night to see just how humid it was going to be the next day to time my runs. But I did it. I know that my biggest inspiration was my c25k threadmates who went through the program at the same time. We encouraged each other along. I miss that!

But now I'm running 3-4 times a week, usually about 2.5 miles. Once/week a longer run with tonight being a 4 mile run. Last week, after 3.75, as I stretched with the group, I couldn't stop thinking about what I'd actually done - 3.75 miles!!! During my summer training I ran for time - the thought of distance scared me. When I ran that first 20 minute run in week 5 I was on cloud nine. When I finished the program I knew I needed something to keep me focused but wasn't ready for a half marathon so hooked up with a group at a running store. It's been the incentive I needed. It gets easier each week. After the long run, the 2 mile seems like a warm up. I can't believe I'm saying that! Me, who occasionally ran from pole to pole, running 4 miles! And my Thanksgiving run is 4.78, with one monstrous hill to climb. So the time goes out the window (running just under 11mm now) but the distance will be one for the books.

Looking forward to running with my kids Thursday  - forecast looks like great running weather here in Connecticut! Happy Thanksgiving!

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

Susan- Congratulations on completing W5D2!  Don't be discouraged by the small weight gain.  It could be water, or better yet, muscle. Remember the more muscle you gain thru running, the more calories you will burn in the long run.  When I was run/walking (pre-C25K), it was 4 weeks before I built up enough endurance and physical activity to lose my first net 1 lb. Then gradually its increased from 1 lb/wk to more.  Let your clothes fit and your fitness levels tell you more about overall well being.  Having said that, you know you need a net deficit of 3500 calories (from exercise or diet) to lose 1 lb.  So running 20-30 mins 3x per wk will only do so much so fast. But keep it up and you'll do fine.  Have fun at your Turkey Trot.

thanks Jess and Joann for the encouragement....Jenny Craig counselor actually upped my calories today to 1500 from 1200 she thinks with all the increased activity that I need more calories....have found during this weight loss journey that if I don't eat all my calories I will gain....so onward.....running and enjoying it! Wish me luck Thursday and good luck to everyone else that is hitting the road!

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

    Jess

Did you struggle at all around week 6? I did a 20 min run once and cannot seem to get to 20 again without walking after about 13 or 14 min. this morning, 2 min walk at 13 min and then fininished the 20. You experience this at all and how do I get thru it?

On a positive note, a month or so ago, I could barely get to 60 sec without feeling like my heart was exploding, so, I do know there is progress, just gets a bit frustrating once in a while when more progress escapes you.
