Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

    Good Morning Runners!

Jess - My ankles are doing very well! I bought a new pair of Asics Gel running shoes that have alot more cushioning and stability and my ankles have not bothered me at all! I am going to do W2D2 tonight. So far, so good! I really have not had a problem with the program thus far and it is tempting to jump ahead, but I am not going to do that. I am going to follow the program as it is laid out for the complete 9 weeks!

Susan - Will be pulling for you during your Turkey Trot!!

Rog - The complete 20 min will come I am sure! Pat yourself on the back for a job well done and continue on. Congrats on your success thus far with the program!

As I said, I will be doing W2D2 tonight. I went to my first Pilates class last night and OMG! I am going to be hurting later today! I used and stretched muscles that I did not even know I had!

I hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday! I will not be on the puter any during the holiday weekend, so I will be very anxious to find out how everyone did over Thanksgiving with the C25K as well as all those that are participating in Turkey Trots!

Everyone have a safe, blessed and healthy Thanksgiving! We have so much to be thankful for! This forum being one of them.

    You inspire me!

It is month 2 , and I am struggling to run 3 minutes.

But in month 1 my heart was pounding after 60 seconds of running!

So if you can graduate from 60 secs one month ago to 14 mins today, I can take heart , knowing that I will improve in time.

I have to just keep at it.

I must confess that my legs are a lot stronger than they were two months ago.

    Cheers!

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

First time running in the Manchester Road Race yesterday. About 4.78 miles. Having walked it twice I knew what to expect but boy was it tough. 14000 registered runners and walkers and for the first mile you just struggle to keep from running into people. The monstrous hill goes on for almost a mile. I did it! Decided beforehand that time didn't matter. FInished almost 5 miles for the first time ever! It was really lots of fun. The race route, which goes mostly through neighborhoods,  is lined with spectators partying on their lawns, jazz bands, bagpipes, rock bands, DJ's, costumes, the works! It's like being in a parade!  There are times you sing along, laugh, cheer, and rush to finish. I was so flushed at the end, but I could have kept on going. If it weren't for that darn hill...

Plan on working hard to maintain my running through the winter, likely move inside to the dreaded treadmill. I think the best plan for me would be to sign up early for a March/April race to have something to train for.

So glad to hear everyone's great turkey trot results!  Stay with it!

    Next up a 5k on Dec 6...

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

Wow Jess!  Congratulations, that's an amazing time for your first 5K!

I did a Thanksgiving 5K yesterday (my first since graduating C25K) and finished in 36:13.  My aim was to run the whole 5K, but I didn't quite manage it.  I think I started out too fast and that affected my endurance.  I ended up having to take a few walk breaks towards the end.  But I made sure that I sprinted across the finish line!

There were almost 1,000 runners in the race and I came 688th!  The way I look at it, I was faster than almost one third of the runners!  I came 8th out of 14 in my age group.  Not too shabby either!  I don't think I'll ever be very fast, but I'm not that slow either!

I loved taking part and I learned lots from the experience.  I've already found another 5K in my area on Dec 6th and I'll try again to run the whole race without walk breaks.

Well done to all of us!

Yes! 53 year old on week 6 of C25k. thinking of doing my first 5k on Dec 12.....I also play tennis and golf. My sister is a distance runner and challenged me to try running for the first time in my life. When I tell people I am running they always reply..its not good for you, bad for your knees etc. No injuries for me yet. Do you get the same responses?I love it so far!

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

Congratulations Susan, Jess, Kate and Meg on your 5k's!!!! WoooooooooooooooooooHooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

I am so proud of you all! I am running my first 5K this weekend, but I am only in W3 so I am sure that I will have to walk ALOT! But, I am still going to do the race just because I want to! Time is not going to matter to me, I just want to cross the finish line standing up! The one thing that I am worried about is that it is supposed to be about 30 degrees at race time! I live in the deep south and we have temps this low very seldom and of course we are going to have the temps on race day morning  I have to try and figure out how I need to dress for the race and be warm enough but not get over heated before the race is finished.

I completed W3D1 yesterday and it went very smoothly! I was concerned about the 3 min run, but I did it and could have went longer so I was happy with that!

Congrats again to all of you 5K'ers!!!!

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

I get those comments on running being bad for you. Bottom line: run on forgiving surfaces, cross train - strong quads, glutes will help protect your knees, wear good running shoes/change when worn. And STRETCH after a run. Using common sense sure helps.

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

Mimi: Where in the South are you? I'm in Decatur AL.  I also have a 5K this Saturday, and the forecast is a low of 30 deg, but clear.  It was the same for race last weekend.  I wore run tights & tech long sleeve, with T-shirt over it, plus gloves & headband.  Head was okay, but I took off gloves half way. This weekend, I might opt for compression shorts, & same tops, but no gloves. Then have a warm-up suit nearby for right after the race.

For you, since you are run/walking, you probably need the tights or long pants. A hat and the gloves might also help. Even though you are only on Wk3, just do the same routine as the rest of the week, & add on as many of the run/walk intervals as you can, then just walk.  You will make it!

    Hi JoAnn!

I live in Meridian, MS but I was raised in North Alabama around Russellville. I also used to spend alot of time in Decatur! Small world isn't it?

What you have suggested to wear for the 5K is about the same as what I had in mind. I will be run/walking, but plan to do more running than walking. Even though I am on the 3rd week of the program, I have been speed walking for several years and can move along quickly. Last week I had a trial run so to speak and checked to see if I could run/walk the 5K in a decent time and I was pleased with my time and did run for the biggest part of the 5K  taking only a few 1 min brisk walk breaks, so I will be getting warmed up pretty quickly.

Congratulations on your past race and good luck on the race you have comming up!

Thanks for the advice on what to wear! It is not supposed to be this cold where we live this early! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I will be 54 in exactly 3 weeks, and completed C25k last year.  I've been following along reading this thread somewhat sporadically and have commented in the past how inspiring you all are.

I just wanted to come back again and say YOU PEOPLE ROCK!  Age ain't nothin' but a number, and you prove that over and over again with every post I read.

I wish I could throw a big party and invite you all.  It is SO rare to find people in our age group who are interested in developing or resurrecting athletic ability instead of getting the rocking chair ready.

    You're awesome!

Thanks Lianne.  You rock too!  Maybe one day we can all meet up in a race!

I'm sure the rest of you, like me, feel much better for having taken up running.  I'm not prepared to sit around and become inactive as I get older.

And Stilmovin53, I've read that it's not true that running is bad for you - that runners have better knees than non-runners, that we have stronger bones and that we live longer.  (When I typed that last sentence, I typed "they" and then changed it to "we" because we are ALL runners here!)

Good luck to us all this weekend!

This morning was week 8 day 1 -- wow! 28 minutes! I really did it! My schedule got screwed up with a cold and now my 5k is this Saturday and I will only be finishing week 8 instead of week 9... oh well, I will finish the 5k -- don't know if I will be able to run the whole distance but I will certainly try.
