Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?

Just finished C25K and am motivated to keep going.  Still pretty slow at 12 minutes / mile, but I want to get more distance instead of speed at the 5K level.  Thinking about this plan:  http://www.halhigdon.com/10ktraining/10knovice.htm

Anyone want to join me in this?  Running my first 5K race on Sunday and then was planning to start this plan on Tuesday next week.

I just participated in my first 5k race last weekend, and it was great!  I am planning to start 10k training in the next week or so and am interested in a thread.

Completed a modified C25K program that I started in June.  Ran my first 5K in September and another one last week and scheduled to run one this Saturday.  I plan on attempting a 10K in November so trying to increase distance quickly.  I am all for a plan that will get me there!  Best of luck to all.

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?
I am on week 7 of the C25K plan but have veered from the training schedule and was actually looking at when to start the Hal Higdon 10K novice program, mu first 5K race is in 2 weeks, but I thought I might start working on the 10k plan and just have my first 5k incoorporated as one of the scheduled run days.  I ahve been posting on another thread for the last 7 weeks and the support has been great but it doesn't seem anyone else in the current group is looking to progress to trying a 10k, and you know, everyone has a different reason for running so its nice to find a group that has a similar plan of action, so I'm in for being a part of this 10k group and will schedule my plan for this and my race accordingly.

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?

So I figured out where I am now with the c25k and my race coming up in 2 weeks and looked at the 10k novice routine and since I like to have my weekends off from the gym and running ( but if the weather is good I can bike and count as a cross train day) I kind of modified how my work outs will go but essentially this will be week 1 of the 10k plan for me today would be considered day 2 as I ran on tuesday, today I ran and did weights.

Hope to hear from others

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?

I think it is an interesting idea.  I did not actually do the C25K program.  I found out about it after I had already ran my first 5K race.  My time was decent (26:37) and I have since done 3 5K's and attempted a 5mile race.

I think that I would like to start a 10K program, but I am currently working on the intermediate program from the Active Community that was free.  I am about 3 weeks into it and have seen my time improve as I go.  My next 5K race is this weekend (weather says cold and rainy... that sucks!) so we shall see if the work produces results.

Since I only have 1 more 5K this year, I think upgrading my training to do a 10K should not be an issue.  I am looking not only for going longer but also improving my times on any race I do.

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?

Hi!

I am actually following the Hal Higdon Novice 10K plan right now. I have pretty much been following it to the letter, and I have loved it...tomorrow I will try the 5 mi "long" run. Longest I will have ever ran! I am going for a 5 miler on Thanksgiving Day and using this as somewhat of a prep, even though I will have (hopefully) completed the distance after tomorrow.

I finished C25K earlier this year, injured my knee...but now I'm back on track! I'd love to join your discussion!

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?

Mango... good luck with the 5 miler.  I did my first one without really training (I was still doing 5K's) and I went at my 5K pace.  I did finish it, though I ended up stopping to walk a few times after mile 3.  Just go into it with a different mindset and keep focused on the goal.  If you can do a 5K, you can do a 5 miler - keep at it and you will be fine.  Most of my runs are the 3 mile range, but I do one long one that ends up being just over 5 miles in about 42 min.  Since I do not have a way to keep track how far I run after the 5 mile course, I am just guessing at that point and I just stop once I hit the 5 mile mark.

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?
Ericd try out the nike+ sensor you can use it with an ipod or it has a wrist band that tracks your miles for you from one run and over a course of time, Or a regular pedometer too, i jsut like that the nike set up tracks and uploads everything when you go to sync your ipod on your computer you can set up goals and monitor how your doing and even "race" against people as it keeps your times for you so you don't ahve to worry about a watch.  you don't actually have to buy the shoes either, they make pouches now that will attach to any shoe, the pouch is like 6-10 dollars on ebay

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?
Ericd, thanks for the well wishes! The "test run" for the 5 miler went well today. I felt great and actually felt that I could have run much longer than the 5 miles at the time. Now, I am tired...LOL. Of course, I still have a lot of time before the actual race on thanksgiving to improve my time now! I am just going to keep following the HH Novice plan. To track your mileage, check out mapmyrun.com. The "hybrid map" specifically is great if you run on trails or something that is not a defined road, as it overlays all the street names on a satellite-produced map.

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?

Hi!  I just finished the first week of the Novice Hal Higdon 10K training.  I'd love to hear others experiences as we work through the schedule.  Just as an introduction, I'm a 43 year old SLOW runner.  My average pace is in the 11:30 range on a good day and 12:15 on a bad.  I'm loving getting back into running as I have been pretty sedentary over the last few years.  It's great being active again.  I can't wait to get to know everyone.

so doing the c25k program I have been using the ullrey podcast, but now that I want to do 5k210k I was wondering if anyone has found a similar type of podcast geared toward the 10k training?

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?

Nikki - Thanks for the information.  I think I am going to save up and get a Forerunner205.  I had looked at the Nike Sensor, but I like some of the features of the Garmin better.  Besides, I would then want to get an Ipod if I got the sensor ... not in the plans yet.  I "borrow" my wifes MP3 player on occasion, but mostly run without it...  I tried using the maping feature, but since my neighborhood is new many of the roads I run on are not showing on the map.  I used my car to route it and I think it is close enough until I can map it properly.

Not sure what you meant on the Podcast, but there was one that I used over the weekend on the 5K that was called Motiontraxx.  It is music that you can download for free that helps you keep to a beat.  I have been using one the past 2 times running called "Serious4Speed" that is set at 182 Beats per min.  I do not run as fast as they say (low 8's per mile), but it did seem to help some.

Mango - great to hear that you had a successful run!  5miles are not always easy... I have run 1x week over the past 3 weeks and my time is decent (42-43 min)  I think my next long run next Sunday will be to run my 5k route 2x.  Keep it up and let us know how it is going.  I will do the same when I try the 10K next Sunday.

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?

Hi there,

I started running this July for the first time in my life and have done two 5K's.   I am so happy that I finished w/o passing out but it's really easy to get discouraged when you see other people finish so quickly!  I did my first in 38.4 (torrential downpours too) and then the 2nd in 37.13 according to 'gun time' but my time was a little shorter I just don't have official results!

Anyway-I'm planning on running a 10K on Dec 13th in DC (Jingle all the Way run!)  I got shinsplints in my last race b/c I ran full speed like an IDIOT down a couple hills w/ NO form.  SO I'm taking it easy and doing the bike and elliptical to keep up some endurance.  My goal is to start RUNNING by Nov 1st-I've tried a few times since my last race and it's excruciating (yes, I'm icing, stretching, strengthening...nothing but time will fix it at this point).  So-I found my training plan on About.com.  I googled "10K training plans for beginngers" and it popped up first.  It seems doable for SURE.

Does anyone else get discouraged when they see such good times?  I'm sooooo slow.  If I can run a 12 min mile I'm happy...I just can't seem to keep up the quickness w/o getting really winded TOO fast!

Re: Completed C25K - Anyone want to try going from 5K to 10K?
Ericd thanks for the motiontraxx info this is just what I was looking for.  I had been using my own music but found that even though its upbeat, I would be thinking about how long I had to go before getting to the end of my playlist and it would create a mental barrier to keeping me motivated.  The Robert Ullrey podcasts were great for starting out because he would keep time for you on walk/run intervals telling you when to switch, but now that I am going for longer distance I need something else as the other was olny set up to have you run for 30 minutes at the most.
