Shorts for men and women

Hi all, I'd like to get some advice on running shorts. I've tried to buy locally (Target) but find the shorts there to be too short and have problems riding up. I've read good things about the Nike Tempo shorts. Like many Nike shorts it says it has built in briefs, are these sort of firm like a compression short or is it just an overglorified liner?

Also does anyone have any suggestions for the guys? My husband is pretty happy with his current set of shorts but is getting some chafing and I thought maybe a compression short underneath might work (does Nike sell these? one stop online shop would be handy) or if Nike has men's shorts that have a compression short type thing underneath.

Oh and any shorts with pockets or recommendations on pockets' actual usefulness would also be helpful.

I know a lot of runners use body glide, what about skin rubbing on lose fabric does the body glide still work for that? Thanks.

Re: Shorts for men and women
I use a combination of Nike Fit shorts (no compression) and a product called Bag Balm for my long runs...magic!  I too did the Target stuff.  I have spent a significant amount of money on different shorts, and I like the Nike's the best.  I have tried the ones with spandex liners, and I still like the "overglorified liner" the best.  If you happen to go to a Health Expo, you can find some great deals on shorts and other gear.  I know it is personal preference, but just thought I would let you know what works for me.  I run with my 2 pairs of Nike Fit and have several pairs that just sit in the drawer...

Re: Shorts for men and women

It is funny as I am thinking of the same question getting ready for the colder season.  I actually run with a pair of windbreaker pants.  It has a liner and seems to work good.

Couple of things I have found since I started looking into it:

1) Walmart has a compression type shorts that seem decent.  Cost is $10 for either the pants or top.  The maker is Starter.

2) Nike does have shorts and pants like you are talking.  Check on the Nike website to see what they have.  If you happen to be doing mycokerewards, you can get free gift cards to the website.  The cost is right around $30 per pc.  Theirs (unlike Starter) are geared towards also keeping you warm.  When I put on the top from Starter, it was comfortable and pretty warm.

3) If you want to look into what the Nike (and Under Armour) products are like - Dick's Sporting Goods has them.  I am thinking I would try on the Nike product and then order it online once I am comfortable with the size. The cost at Dick's is $50 each.

Anyway, not sure if that will help any...

Re: Shorts for men and women

I like Nike compression shorts - they seem to be slightly longer than others and don`t ride up - they also have a good pocket in the back

The other shorts I like a lot are these http://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=46806&vid=1&pid=683755 - they have 2 nifty side pockets that are big enough for my gels ipod keys and $20 !!

Re: Shorts for men and women

I don't know much about men's, but I love these: http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/RRL990/

Better quality than Starter at Walmart or Champion at Target, but not overpriced like Nike. The slanted pocket on the hip zips shut, and is big enough for a key fob, ID, tissue, etc.
