Re: Any decent energy bars out there?

Sure there are.  Just as with all foods  ...  what works for one might not for another.  Experiment during your training.

I have used a variety of GUs (flavors and brands).  I find that after 2 or 3 I struggle with them.  Not sure why.  I just do.

Lately, I've been testing Power Bars.  They make some that are thick and pliable that seem to work for me.  Last week, I ate 2 before a 22 mile run  ...  had one after 10 miles.  Too much.  I felt they kept my energy up  ...  but also that I ate too much.  They are also a little hard to chew while running and you definitely need fluids afterwards.  But like I said  ...  experiment during training.  I'll try many things  ...  once or twice.

Re: Any decent energy bars out there?

i'm a big fan of the nature valley granola bars for three reasons 1. they taste good. 2. you don't need 2 gallons of water to wash them down. 3. they are a lot cheaper.

power bars while running? i know i couldn't do that..but gu chomps are easy to eat and taste good compared to other products and are a lot less messy then the gels. just practice whatever you plan on using during your training runs. a race is is a bad time to find out a gel or bar makes you nauseous.

Re: Any decent energy bars out there?

For gels I first go to Hammer, then Clif Blocks, then Clif shots 9In likeability).  I tried GU and it really doesn't agree with me.  With Hammer gels, you can only find them in specialty/bike stores (in my experience), but for some reason, when I take them, I feel like I get an extra kick and they are easy on the stomach.  Clif blocks are good because they are a little more palatable and not as messy.

For energy bars, I go with Clif bars and Promax.  Clif bars are good, but they usually land me straight to bathroom, so I only eat them pre-race.  Sorry to be so honest, but were all friend here, right? I just started eating Promax and they taste realllly good.  Also Clif bar now makes Clif Rocks and they are bite sized bar pieces and have this coating like a M&M.  They are great because you can regulate how much you want at what time.

And while on subject, eating too much of gels/bars, no matter how good they taste, can really wreak havoc on your system.  Pay attention to the caloric content as well as, how many calories you are expending during activity.

This is exactly what my doctor told me.  When I started working out, I would drink a 32oz sports drink (Gatorade or Powerade) and then one of those bigger workout bars (300-350cal) after my workout.  Well, when I was a new runner -- that actually had me consuming more calories than I was expending.  Years later, I typically drink G2 (Gatoraides 70cal in 20oz) and a workout bar with about 200 calories, 25% daily protein, etc.  This is good for moderate workouts where I burn between 900 - 1400 calories.  Its only when I do a hard workout 1400 - 2000 carolies that I'll consider the larger caloric items.

Note: This is what my doctor helped me figure out based on my weight, age, physicals and workout sytle  -- please do not think I have any medical knowledge.

I hadn't seen these yet but will definintely look for them next time I'm at the store -- thanks.

The only place I have found Clif rocks is REI and specialty bike/run stores.  Not really out on the main market yet.

Re: Any decent energy bars out there?

Ill have to check that out.  I am hesitant trying some of the bars because of the bad "reputation" that they have for high calories and not great taste.  That is probably why the energy drinks that I won at the last race - they are still sitting here.  I have not seen the bites, I will have to keep an eye out for it.

Thanks

Re: Any decent energy bars out there?

It may sound crazy but I'm going to go old school here.  I have a friend who races bikes a lot and he swears by slightly watered-down, flat regular Coke when ever he rides.  He opens a few cans, puts them into glasses and sets them out on the counter to fizz out and then puts them in his water bottles with a little water.  At first I thought it would give me a belly ache but I tried it for a casual 10 miler instead of my usual Gatorade and outside of the strange first taste I have to admit it worked good and gave me that little extra kick with the extra simple sugars, and I've been doing it ever since.

Another old school is for the post run.  So simple it's almost crazy and a little frustrating.  A peanut butter (no jelly) sandwich on wheat bread and a glass of chocolate milk when you finish that longer run instead of the recovery bars, powders, etc.  I know it's insane but it works like a charm.  The protien and fat in the peanut butter and the milk are just what the doctor ordered for recovery and repair, your belly feels a little fuller but not uncomfortable and I'm not AS sore as when I was using the other $40/container recovery mix that never really mixed and tasted like crap.  :^)  I kid you not.  Give the Coke a try on your next run, the peanut butter and chocolate milk a go after your second long run, and if you're cool with it, slap 'em together for full impact on your 3rd long run.  Caloric count isn't really that significant.

Enjoy!

Re: Any decent energy bars out there?

I usually eat 1/2 a Zone Perfect bar (at most grocery stores) pre run but only if its 7 or more miles, less than that I don't eat anything. I also will drink about 1/3 of a bottle of G2 during a 6+ mile run about 1/2 way.  On less of a run, I don't use the G2 and just stick to water.  I do use Whey Protein (Isomax, 30 grams of protein mixed with water about 111 calories) and recently switched from Designer Whey and found that the switch is helping the GI problems Designer Whey was giving me.  Also I'm an Accel Gel fan for long runs, less thick than GU but only gel for runs over 10 miles.  I'm very careful that I don't consume more "energy" friendly calories than I'm expending which is why I only add the products at certain times.

Re: Any decent energy bars out there?

Okay, I haven't done any long runs yet, but I do have an opion on energy bars.. Even though its' not an energy bar, but I totally agree with ??? (can't remember who it was, sorry! ) that nature valley granola bars are the best!... They taste good, especially honey and oats is my favorite. I get a half 1 in before my run together with a peanut butter sandwich.
I usually run in the mornings and I need to eat a lot before I have the energy to run. If I don't eat, I litterally will faint after half a mile!...

I've heard the peanut butter and choc milk mix before and I'll def. try that out after my longer runs (when I start doing them )
