Can I run and cycle?

Can I start my couch to 5k and cycle on my off days?  I work 6 miles away and thought I might be able to cycle in the moring 6 miles and cycle home 6 miles on the days I was not running.  Any thoughts?  Would I be working my lower boby to offten to recover?

Re: Can I run and cycle?

I completed C25K in August. I would ride my bike on off days and it really helped me. I love riding my bike and running too. Being that you will be new to running just be careful not to over do it.Biking is a great cardio workout also over distances you will use many other muscle groups also, unlike running, biking is low impact. Remember that in order for the bike to be most beneficial you should be riding at about 90rpms. Good Luck and have fun.

Re: Can I run and cycle?

It may depend on you, your starting fitness level, and how much you're already used to riding.  I was riding 12-18 miles a week before I started C25K, including the short ride into my workplace daily.  I maintained those daily rides to and from work through most of the program (until a very sore knee had me resting it more in weeks 7 and 8), but other people I've chatted with had a tough time riding.  You'd think legs-is-legs, but they work the muscles differently.

So, you likely can do it, but just pay attention to your body and what it is telling you.  Just remember on your runs: don't worry about your speed if you are just starting out.  My wife found some great advice somewhere here on active.com, about newbie runners: run slower than you think you should be running.  That was key for me.  In the later weeks, I found myself going faster just because I had developed some strength and stamina.  It's not something I set out to do.  I'm still slow by most running standards, but I did see a real improvement in the last two weeks (I covered more ground in the same amount of time).

It was my wife's idea--really! Okay, it helps that I need to lose the weight, too.

Re: Can I run and cycle?

Biking is excellent cross-training for running. You'll be using different muscles, which means that you'll be giving your running muscles the rest they need to be ready for the next run.

I did the elliptical for cross-training when I did c25k, and it worked fabulously as well.

Good luck!

Re: Can I run and cycle?

I just started running 2 weeks ago, but i have been biking for awile. I usually ride at the minimum 100 miles a week. Two days after my very first run I couldn't beleive the burn in my legs. It felt like I had done heavy squats in the gym! I rode a century over the summer and did not have any pain after. I guess my point is running and biking somehow affect the leg muscles differently! I ride my bike on the days i dont run and have had no fatiging problems.....but everyone is different.

Re: Can I run and cycle?

Be very careful when running and biking the same time.  One day you may fall into a pool and turn into a triatlete. And everyone knows you don't want to become one of those.

Re: Can I run and cycle?

Hey  --- come on over to the dark side -- triathlons...

After you get done with your 5K program -- and with all that biking done -- heck you're a shoe-in for a

duathlon; and as the  guy said -- might as well add swimming too.

Most du/tri training programs essentially do what you are doing, in terms of splitting the  run, bike, and swim

days ( On the higher end of tri training, usually swimming gets added to either the bike or run day).

If you were to refrain -- it would be desirable, typically, to put a rest day either in front of or after your longest run/bike day --

but for a 5K program that's probably not even necessary.

I did, you'll be fine.  I found it helpful to keep me "on schedule" as it gave me something to do on the off days.

Re: Can I run and cycle?

Hey there!  I run 4 days a week and teach spin class 2 days a week and I think they work well together.  and because your cycling 6 miles that should be a nice easy ride (if its not too hilly).  They both work different muscles in your legs so you should be fine!  Good luck!
