Hey Folks!!!
Sorry - normally I'm not the thread originator, but I just couldn't wait any longer to say.....
I finished my first 5K!!!!
I did it! I can't believe it, I feel uber amazing.....sore, but nonetheless amazing! My goal to finish was 42 mins, but I crossed the finish line @ 40:52!! Just 8 weeks ago I could not have dreamed of this. A big special THANK YOU to everyone here for the support! ![]()
Speaking of achievement can I get an AMEN for Mr. & Mrs. F?? What an inspiration the both of you are! CONGRATS!!!

Congratulations, GoRunIrish!!! What a great 5k time! I hope when I do my first that I can get in under 45 minutes!
And a belated congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. F! I'm so happy for you two for sticking with it and I can't wait to hear all about you spilling the beans to your son!
My run got postponed until this evening due to sheer, crushing exhaustion. I still have the remnants of a stupid little cough from my bout with the flu a couple weeks ago and while my coughing isn't productive or even that regular, it takes a lot out of me. I'm just so tired! I plan to get out this evening, after it's cooled a bit (supposed to be 89 today)...maybe it'll be a nice break from my school work (two exams this week and a paper) and a good de-stress from my work-work.
Have a great Monday, everyone!
We are always running for the thrill of it thrill of it
Always pushing up the hill searching for the thrill of it
On and on and on we are calling out and out again
Never looking down I’m just in awe of what’s in front of me

congrats GoRunIrish - that is awesome!
finished Week 1 today - feel good, so i'm probably gonna do W2D1 tomorrow and then take my day off on wednesday.
also, after seeing AFMR talking about the 100 Pushup program, i checked it out and decided to try it as well. i did my initial test at the end of last week and am starting the actual workout program tonight. thanks for bringing up that program AFMR - and thanks to you and everyone else for the C25k inspiration, as well. (BTW .. my 100PU inital test results: 34, starting me at Week 3 of the program)
(accidentally posted this in last week's thread earlier - doh!)

Potato- Honest to God truth is that I first put my intial goal time at 45 mins. But then I thought, wait that's a 15mm pace and I'm @ 13:30 mm pace. So get this - I came up with a new goal of 42 mins .... 13 for the first mile, 14 for the second and 15 mins for the third mile...just in case I was tired! LOL!! Funny math strategy, but it worked. All said and done it was a 13:09 mm pace... not to shabby for an overweight 5K newbie! ![]()

Anyone out there who's finished C25K before? Did any of you find yourself down afterwards?
I had a rough, stressful weekend with grad school work and, of course, Halloween (getting the kids ready and out and the 45 lbs. of candy they collectively brought home). We also have an N1H1 sickie at home (on Tamiflu, even), and others, including me, are starting to cough. I just found the end sort of anti-climactic and a little depressing, especially when I realized that I will need to work this hard at being healthy for the rest of my life. That was almost worse than peeking ahead to the next week when just starting--it's almost too much to comprehend.
That's why I really liked C25K. I only needed to worry about beating the plan as laid out for that specific day. I wasn't facing the behemoth of do-this-for-the-rest-of-your-life-lest-you-surely-die! I just needed to finish W1D1, W4D2, or W9D3.
My brain wiring also tends to get hyperfocused on things--I'm certifiably ADHD (without the hyperactivity, so ADD). While doing C25K, that was the primary thought on my mind all the time. Now, as it has ended and my studies have resumed, I'm finding it hard to think about anything but the chapters I need to read, the topics bouncing around in my head, and the content of the papers I need to write. Oi! ADD surely lends to my spontaneous, funny, and creative personality, but it sure can making doing things consistantly an absolute bear.
Although I planned to take today off, I might joing Mrs. F for a two-mile run. I'll need to get my head into the game to do that, and I'll need to be careful with my right leg (definate shin splints starting after the last two runs in W9). I know what I need to do. The problem I've most often had in my life is that I don't ever want to do what I need to do. I just want to do what I want to do, and right now, that is to sleep (after having a large bowl of Breyer's Vanilla Ice Cream drowned in a shot of Amaretto). Good thing I'm at work! I can't act on what I want to do!
Keep running, all! Don't let my mood pull you down.
It was my wife's idea--really! Okay, it helps that I need to lose the weight, too.

AFMR, why not move on to improving your time? I dunno...just a thought...I've kind of had the same thoughts ("This is great...but what do I do when I'm done") and while I have a month and a half to worry, I'm going back and forth between speedwork and half marathon. Although I don't really look that far into the future...gotta finish the 5k first!

AFMR - I know, I know.... yesterday after my 5K was over, I was like "Ok well now what?". C25K gave me something to look forward to... and now, I'm kinda bummed. Accomplished, but bummed. Oh great and now its the holidays, too! Food Galore and big sweaters to cover it all up! It's definetely NOT the time to give it all up. But here's my plan for now...I'd like to participate in a 5K once a month. I already have Dec-Feb runs planned out.
And then maybe after that, a 10K! Yikes!
And then I thought, ok how about one of those other plans like One Hour Runner, Gateway to 8K, or the 100 Push Ups Challenge... BTW does anyone have any info on these?? Lookin' for a new hobby...lol.
I don't think that we all have to work this hard forever
...we just need to get to that mountain top. And then once we've reached that mountain top, reward yourself with maintaining all that you've worked so hard for. And I think that we can all pretty much agree that maintaining is a little easier than just trying to friggin' get there!

i have a question for you folks ---- i found a 5K that i'd really like to run on December 12th. per my "schedule", that should be at the end of Week 7 of C25k -- is that too early to try and run my first 5k? (well - my first since 1993 - LOL)

Tex- I ran my first 5K @ week 8. The way I felt was, there's nothing at week 9 that I couldnt already do at week 8. If you were on week 3 or even 5, I'd say it might be a little tough and to give your body the chance it deserves to finish the 5K. You could always give it til the 1st of Dec at least and see how you feel.

I ran a 5k as my W1D1 workout...
I also have one scheduled during W3 (this week) and W6...both of those mainly because they are being run in my neighborhood...and I didn't want to wait a whole year.

C25K Week: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
I'm new to the community and so glad to find more new runners with a little extra weight! I'm on W5D3 of C25K - I'll be doing my run tonight after work. My first 5K is scheduled for 11/22/09 and I'm pretty nervous! Glad to see that there are so many others that have the same feelings! Keep up the good work everyone and wish me luck!!
GoRunIrish- Thanks for starting the new week's thread. Your 5K time is just amazing, especially for a first timer - under 41 mins! I think we first-timers modestly over-estimate our initial 5K time because a) we are still not sure we will finish & b) we'd rather beat a reasonable estimate. I know I was just hoping to beat 55 mins, and did it under 52 mins. We just don't know how the momentum and excitement of a race can lighten and quicken our footsteps. I felt like a snail being passed, but did better than expected.
This is the link for the 100 pushups: http://hundredpushups.com/ I can't even do one - I have no upper body strength, so I need to start this too.
Irish & AFMR- I am faced with the same dilema. I finish C25K later this week, and I need to find a program to improve my time, and then increase my distance. I've researched 5K's and 10K's in the region for the next 6 months. I printed info on each & have them pasted to the back of my door as inspiration. Now I just have to find an effective plan to get better at running.
However, my ultimate goal is a sprint triathlon (600 meter swim/18 mi hilly bike/5K run) in June, so my work is cut out for me. My big challenge is to lose enough weight so that I can finish in a reasonable time. Swimming is not a problem, but for biking I can't fit on anything right now besides an exercise bike, because my gut is in the way. I've lost 24 lbs far, but I need to lose at least 60-70 more before then. Run, bike, swim and strength training are all part of the plan to burn the calories. I don't expect to work this hard forever, but right now its part of my plan to get in shape.
CenTexWannaRun - I think you will do fine with a 5K in week 8. I actually ran mine at the end of week 6. It was a struggle, but I managed.
TransplantedPotato - If you run tonight, please take it easy so that the remnants of that cold don't flare up again. Extending an extra day or two is okay, if it keeps you healthy enough to keep going.

AFMR- Did you ever think 2 months ago that you would be talking about "just" doing a nice, easy 2 mile run? LOL! I think that you and the Mrs need to have a graduation week of 3-4 nice easy runs, to collect your thoughts and make your plans for the next phase of your training program. With sick kids and intense grad school pressures, you both need to give yourself a break before you plunge ahead. Research the different training plan options and schedule a few potential 5K and 10K runs in the next 3-4 months. This weekend, add a long run, and next week have a few "training" runs in preparation for the 5K race with your sons. Then on to Phase 2- with your new training program and the expert advice of your sons to guide you.

8903 - I don't blame you for being nervous... I thought I was gonna pee my pants when the start countdown began. ![]()
Jasmine - I think that you are so right! I'd rather beat a ridiculously exaggerated time than not even come close to a reasonable time. C25K was building my confidence and I didn't want to lose that in a matter of minutes on a 5K, ya know? I'd be devasted. But I thought my 42 minute goal was reasonable, tough but not out of reach. A 42 min goal time meant no stopping, just stay on pace. I'm so glad that I beat my time. I mean, to me, a full minute is a big deal!
I'd like to place at 40mins or just a hair below that for the Turkey Trot.... I'll keep my fingers crossed. Bottom line, if I finish that next race @ 40:51 - that's an improvement! ![]()
Your goals are so amazing! What a fantasic plan. I'd like to strive for a 10k by June... baby steps, baby steps. Oh and thx for the website!!
