Random acts of kindness

Hey all, so to make a long story short, I aggravated a stress fracture of mine on my 5th metatarsal and at mile 22 of a marathon last Sunday and just couldn't take it any more.  As I hobbled to the nearest aid station a runner dropped pace and came to a walk next to me and made sure I was doing ok, went through his belt pack and gave me his advil.  I never thought anyone would consider stopping this close to the end to help a complete stranger, but am glad he did (THANK YOU).

I'm just kind of curious to see if anyone else out there has had a random act of kindness whether it be in a race or inbetween, I'd love to hear about it!

Re: Random acts of kindness

Love your story! Thanks for sharing.

I guess it wasn't a random act of kindness, but since I am new to running it is all I have.

I ran my first 5K  a few Sundays ago and two of my friends and my husband "ran" it with me. They stayed with me even though they were alot faster. One of them came from Seattle to Chicago for the race.

Another random act was some of my neighbors giving me thumbs up or yell out "way to go" when they see me running. Those little things really help make me feel better.

Re: Random acts of kindness

I like to ride my bike with my son for cross training.  A couple weeks ago we went out riding and for whatever reason I let my husband talk me into taking his bike instead of my own.  Well making a long story short the chain fell off my husbands bike.  For the life of me I could not get it back on.  I had greese all over my hands (probably on my face to) and was ready to give up and walk home after about 15 min fighting with this chain.  Then this car drives by, stops and this guy gets out.  When he started walking toward us I got a bit scared and went to stand by my son.  I say a bit scared because I'm a small framed female, alone with a 7 yr old boy, its starting to get dark and on a road that is surrounded by corn fields.  It could of really been a bad situation.  Anyway the guy says he is a bike mechanic and doesn't mind helping me out.  Just like that we were on our way home and I couldn't have been more grateful.

When I ran a half marathon this past June I bonked (literally) at mile 13.0.  I had to stop to walk and couldn't walk a straight line.  A fellow runner took hold of me and held me up until a paramedic could come to me.  To this day I am grateful for that runner and I will never know who he is, but I am tearing up just thinking about him.  With only 100 meters left in the race, he was willing to stop until he knew I was cared for  - now that's a winner in my book!

p.s.  I never did cross the finish line, but that's another story

Re: Random acts of kindness

I raced a 5K (the Calabasas Classic) this morning. At the expo after the race, one of the booths was for a local charitable organization that delivers stuffed teddy bears to seriously ill children. I stopped by the booth, talked a bit with one of the volunteers and looked at samples of the very cute bears. I thought about it a bit, then scurried over to my car, retreived my wallet and made a donation for a teddy bear delivery. It just felt like the right thing to do.
