Ive run 4 marathons, 2 on my home course and 2 out of town (MCM and Chicago). Im pretty nervous/anxious before a marathon, worrying about weather and all the pre-run head games. For me an out of town race can contribute to the anxiety: flights, hotel, lack of familiarity with the course, etc. I ran my home course last month and was very relaxed the week before, slept well, etc, so maybe that helped -- I missed a new PR by 40 secs. But Chicago was in '07 with the heat and havoc, and MCM '08 I totally mispaced the hills in first part and paid dearly later on. So I don’t really think knowing the course will help you perform better, but maybe being at home will make the pre-marathon week more of a non-event, which is good, for me anyway
GOOD LUCK and don’t forget to HAVE FUN, soak up the energy from the crowds and smile back!!!
