Bruised/sore hip, strained adductor

...or that's how I'd describe it.  It began on Monday with my hip feeling sore, and the soreness worsened on Tuesday.  I took yesterday off, and that was when the pain in the adductor area began.  This morning it woke me up at 2:30, the adductor aching and burning.

The hip soreness seems to fall in line with IT band issues I've had in the past, and I think I may be asking for all this because I just started running again after a year-long layoff.  Still, I'm doing only 3 miles a day.  I guess even that is too much if my body isn't ready for it.  It's so hard to hold back!

My question: the adductor doesn't hurt while I run, only after.  The hip soreness hurts at the beginning of my run but goes away as I run.  Is it going to be smartest just to lay off running until the pain goes away, or...(ready for the dumb question?)...can I run through this?  Also, do you think using the foam roller will help with the hip soreness, and is it possible that the adductor strain is directly related to ITB irritation?  Like I said, I've had ITB problems in the past, but I've never had this adductor strain problem.  Ugh. I just want to RUN.

Re: Bruised/sore hip, strained adductor

From what my PT has told me (and my experience) is that it's relatively common, when there is an issue with a muscle, to also have some issue with the muscle that performs the opposite movement.  So if you have troubles with your abductors (ITB, Gluteus Medius) then having an issue with your adductor makes sense.

I don't know how easy this is to do while looking in the mirror, but I know one test docs do is a hip drop test.  Stand in front of a mirror where you can see your pelvis.  Put your hands on your hips.  Lift the good leg off the floor - so you're standing on your bad leg.  The side of the pelvis with the lifted leg should not drop - your standing leg should be able to hold your pelvis level.  If not - there likely is some hip abduction sterngthening that needs to be done.

Have you been to a PT for this?

Angie053, from the first discription of the location of your symptoms, my quick response it "it must be the hip joint".  Without additional information it is difficult to be more helpful.  From your follow up description the problem sounds relatively acute, and I would encoruage checking with your PCP.
