What was your best run ever?

Now please note I did NOT say your fastest run, or your proudest PR, or when you beat your best friend for the first time.

I mean your best run.  When you just felt really good, felt like you would never get tired, felt like running was better than almost anything else in the world, felt like you were just floating above the road.

It could have been a one mile training run, could have been a marathon, who knows, but you know what I'm talking about (I hope--if you haven't had a best run yet, I hope you have one soon). Please share.

Mine was this Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. on my 3 mile maintenance run.  It was dark and I was tired from a long day at work. I don't like running in the dark, and my streets have no sidewalks or street lights (but they are pretty deserted; I live out in the boonies).  So I begrudgingly strapped on my reflectors and flashing lights and off I went. The full moon had just cleared the trees--I had a moonshadow either following me or pacing me-- there was no wind, it was about 56 degrees, the stars were all out, and for some reason my feet felt like they never touched the ground for the entire run. I kept thinking, okay, the tired feeling is coming just around this corner, but It. Just. Never. Happened. And I have no clue why (maybe in the dark...you don't notice the hills or the terrain or...?).

PS I tried to recreate the same run this morning in daylight at 7 a.m.  Not gonna happen. Totally wheezed my way through it.

Terry

How about anyone else?

Re: What was your best run ever?

I've had a lot of good runs lately since I've come back to running after about 9 years off and having shed over 20 lbs.

That said, my best run was back when I started to run.  I ran the "Run for the Diamonds" 9 mile race in Berwick, PA on Thanksgiving 1999.  For me, it was my best because it was one of the toughest.  It was a pretty fast time by my standards too.  The big issue was that it was very cold and rainy.  Just an awful day for a race.  It's the kind of conditions, most people hate to run it.  I love to try to toughen it out during runs like these though.  The course is very hilly and I developed side stitches early on.  I wanted to quit, but I just battled and battled and stayed mentally tough.  I just kept pushing and the crowds towards the end were great and really carried me.  My time ended up being fairly close to what I would've actually run in perfect conditions.

Re: What was your best run ever?

Mine was last June, on my birthday, in a 14-mile fundraiser race on Forest Service roads on the Idaho-Montana border. I hadn't officially trained for the race and my husband had run even less, so we didn't even try to run it. We jogged, walked, took about 3 dozen photos, chatted with the volunteers at water stations, and enjoyed each other's company.  The weather was sunny and beautiful and cool, and wildflowers were in bloom. We soaked in nearby natural hot springs afterward, then had a great dinner at a favorite restaurant. All day long I kept saying, This is GREAT!! Then because 14 mountainousmiles are still exhausting even when you're not really running, I slept 10 hours straight. That ne-e-e-ver happens! I'm almost afraid to do that same race again next year because this year was so perfect.

Re: What was your best run ever?

I've had a number of similar "best" runs and the pattern is usually similar. I can't predict when they're going to happen, but they're usually midweek short runs in my residential neighborhood, around 3.5 or 4 miles. I get up and head out at the first light of dawn, in the deep twilight. There is just enough light so I can see where I'm going. As I run, the sun slowly comes up and the sky brightens. The streets are still quiet and the air is cool. I put my mind in neutral and the time goes by so quickly. I want to keep going longer, but I've looped back to my house and need to stop so I can get to work on time. I reluctantly head inside and can't wait for the next one.

Re: What was your best run ever?

Mine was maybe 6 years ago.

It was snowing very much. I was running with the jacket with pockets, so just after 3km of running I felt that my pockets are full of snow

It was 6k race. I met one guy when I was running and as I remember we talked almost all race. It was quite funny.

Sometimes he or me said "Ok, let's catch those in front of us" and we did It's very good to run a race with a friend Or a guy you just met

I am now training for a marathon.

Feel the joy of running

Re: What was your best run ever?

With so many runs behind me I can't remember specifically when my best run was - but I do know the amazing feeling of running in semi-darkness like you describe.  A few times when I run late in the evening I also get that feeling that my feet don't touch the ground and I could run forever.

Believe it or not there is an actual phenomenon where you perceive movement differently in semi darkness.  I read about it somewhere but I can't remember the details only that it struck me as "ah-hah, so that's it!"  Even if you aren't necessarily running faster, it feels like you are and therefore it feels like you are making less effort.  But whatever the reason, it is a nice feeling.  Glad you enjoyed your run!

Recent races:  Peachtree RR: 63:48,  Doug Kessler Lightning 10K: 62:48, Atlanta Half Marathon: 2:19:54,  Polar Bear 5K: 30:13, Chattahoochee Road Runners 10K: 61:03

Lifetime PRs 10K: <55:00, 5K: <27:00  (circa 1990's)

Re: What was your best run ever?

I think mine was the Youngstown Ultra Trail Classic 50K (full race report here). It was a perfect day, I felt strong the whole race, the end came wayyyy sooner than I thought it would, I PRed by an hour and a half, and I met some lovely and incredible athletes. What more could you ask for? It's one of my favorite races. Those 31 miles were easier than runs I've done of half the distance.

Re: What was your best run ever?

Drurunner,

Hey- congrats on the" run for the diamonds"

I have seen that race as a spectator quite a few times- I am from ohio-but for the last 15-20 years we have had Thanksgiving in Bloomsburg.

when my son got into running- that was  the first long race he did.

Actually- I think he may have run THAT exact race that exact day- I think he first ran it as an 11 year old or a 12 year old- which would have been 99 or 00

I remember he got interviewed on the local TV-we video taped it- still have the tape around here somewhere

anyhow- I am doing the C25k program right now- and my best run is always the NEXT run- I am actuallykind of hoping to do the Berwick race fall 2010

( it's a bucket list thing-is 47 to young to start working on your bucket list?"

anyhow- congrats- small world

Re: What was your best run ever?

A while ago, I met a friend every Sunday morning for a 6 mile trail run.  He's much faster than I am but he always runs along with me and we chat.  It began to rain harder and harder until it was just pouring out but it just didn't seem to bother us sloshing through the mud as fast as I could go.  I felt like I was flying.  I drove home totally soaked but really proud of my run.  I think that was the first time I really felt I could call myself a runner.

Re: What was your best run ever?

My best run ever was today, funny enough!!! Being a new runner, I haven't syncronized my runs with the seasons/time changes before. So, I am discovering that my evening runs may change to morning runs. When I got home today, though, I just put the sneakers on and asked dh if he wanted to come on his bicycle. He said ok! So, off we went - and his headlamp helped light my way. I felt safe since he helped with my visibility. Hope we can do some more couples runs/bikes.

Re: What was your best run ever?

Good to see another person that knows the Run for the Diamonds.  I'm actually disappointed because I didn't realize that this year is the 100th running of it.  I'm running the Philadelphia Marathon the Sunday before and just can't do both.  Good luck to you next year.  Hopefully I'll be there too, if I don't run Philly again.

Re: What was your best run ever?

Pikes Peak Marathon was my most satisfying run. I don't think anything can replace the feeling of accomplishment on the ascent when you reach the top 14,115', nothing is close to flying to me like the decent. Crazy enough I have ran this marathon twice! The second time I did a double, first day was half marathon just the ascent and second day was the marathon.I think the next step up for would be Everest marathon.

Re: What was your best run ever?

Without a doubt my first ever 20 miler was my best run ever.  It was the experience and high of a lifetime.  After starting with my group, it seemed like moments and I was off on my own running.  I don't know what posessed me... if it was the course, the area, the weather... or what.  I seemed to have an unstoppable fire and will to just do it.  Somewhere along the line I managed to hook up with some local runners and chatted away for several miles.  I somehow caught our slower runner group that started earlier day and encouraged them.  After that I pushed through the final three or four miles on my own, I managed to finish first in my group.  I looked at my Garmin and I was pushing 9:30's with little or no effort that day... it serves as motivation every time I think I have a bad run.  Just when you think all odds are against you, look what you can do without even thinking about it.

Re: What was your best run ever?

Mine was the Crazy 8's in Kingsport Tn.  It is part of the Fun Fest  weekend.  They have kids races during the day and my six year old son ran in one.  He was so excited and he finished in the front.  That got him hooked on running and now he will run the one mile kids runs at the local races.

The 8K is run at night .  It starts about nine or so.  The Crazy 8's clams to be the worlds fastest 8K.  The Kenyans run this race.  It was so awesome.  The course runs through Kingsport and people in the neighborhood really support the run.  They put candles in bags along the course and cheer you on.  It is in the summer and people will have sprinklers set up you can run through.  This race  is one of the first races that I ran the race at my pace.  I felt like I could run forever.  We finished in a football stadium that had artificial turf.  It was so bouncy, it felt like running on clouds.  The crowd is big and they were cheering you on.  It was the best feeling finishing.  I will never forget the feeling during the race.

I have mine and my sons race number in my race book.
