Re: 2010 Longleaf Triathlon Reviews

This was a great little race. I did the Olympic distance, although the course felt shorter in the swim and the bike.

The swim took place in what looked like a retention pond. I noticed that some of the swimmers that chose to do a warm up swim came out of the water with a brown film on them. However, it was a cold morning and the water was warm, which is all I cared about. The swim start is very interesting. Because it is such a small swim venue, they start athletes off one at a time, every 5 seconds. Makes for a long start for most. But it keeps you away from the masses for most of the swim, which is nice.

The bike started off great going through Starkey park. I had biked in Starkey before, so it was familiar. There were a ton of volunteers on the course, which was great! They kept you on track. Because for the most part, it is a lonely bike ride. Once we left the park the rest was on the highway. They closed one of the lanes, so although road riding usually makes me very nervous, I was okay. Except for the wind. The wind was brutal. I normally ride about 19 - 21MPH...I averaged 16 on this course because of the wind.

The run was more wind. So frustrating. Again...pretty lonely. I think maybe because of that individual start that we had.

Overall, a really well organized event. Publix Family Fitness could learn something from these race organizers. I will definitely do it again next year. I just hope they get better shirts next year. I have no idea who picked the throw up color of yellow/brown, but REALLY bad choice.
