200lb+ One Hour Runner Nov 30-Dec 6

Hey folks! Here is a new week of the One Hour Runner thread for the hefty folks (near, at, or over 200lbs...considered overweight or obese). Many of us have graduated the Couch-to-5K program and have moved on to a more challenging program to improve our fitness and running.
Even though we only had 2 pages on last week's thread, I will maintain the weekly thread to keep things fresh.
**************
Yesterday I attempted Week 1/Day2 of OHR, but was blindsighted by some terrible side pains at the 15 minute mark. I would stretch, walk, then start to jog and immediately feel the telltale signs of a sidestitch. My brother helped me out with some ideas for the next attempt.
The forecast for next Saturday's 5K is cold....high of 37 (so far). It'll be interesting!
Have a great day everyone!

Hi ovenfriend - thanks for doing the OHR thread... I hope to move on to it by Xmas... what a gift! Eventhough I graduated the C25K, I don't feel ready yet for the OHR, but I so desperately need a program to follow!! Hopefully people from C25K will gradually spill over to this thread...
Keep it goin'!!
Happy Running!!

Checking in to new thread to say "HI". If anyone uses the Nike+ for their running and downloads to that website, I'm starting a Challenge on Dec 1 for "Heavy Penguin Females" to run 100 miles in Dec+January. If you are on this thread, but don't meet one of the "criteria", you are still welcome to participate.

Good morning runners,
Hope all is well. Sunday was W1D3 for me on OHR and I had a great run; ran 2.75 miles at a 14.54 pace. Today (W2D1), was a tough run, and I only did the required 30 minutes, and ended up with 15.00 pace for just over 2 miles today. This was probably the worst run I've had in awhile, my mind just wasn't into it, and my body followed. I felt very heavy today and was even dragging my feet a little. I'm a little discouraged, since I'm supposed to do a run on Saturday, but I'll try again on Thursday and hopefully can go a bit longer then.
Hopefully everyone else is having a good week. Looking forward to hearing how everyone is progressing.
Hey Turtle....
I've had a tough week with running too, and my first 5K is this Saturday. On Thanksgiving I did W1D1 of OHR. 15 minutes into it I got a terrible side stitch. I reluctantly started to walk, stretch my right side, and started to jog again. The pain came back over and over, so I just walked home kind of frustrated, but knowing that so far I've had so many great runs and never had to repeat a week. I didn't freak out.
Then yesterday, W1D1 repeated, I ran on the treadmill at the gym, which I usually don't do but am grateful for the option. At 21 minutes, another side stitch. My brother had advised me to try some new breathing techniques, which I was really watching on the treadmill. One thing I noticed about both days is that I hadn't eaten nearly enough in the day before the runs. For future runs, I'm not going to run unless I've been properly fed.
I'm nervous about the race Saturday (sort of)....not that I will finish with bad time or that I'll have to walk part of it. It's the WEATHER! I'm not trained for cold weather running AT ALL. I've run in maybe the low 40's. Race day could be in the 20's when the race occurs in the morning. I'm going to have to force myself to run Thursday morning OUTSIDE.
OK I'm watching Biggest Loser...I have to go. I'll come back when it's over!

Yeah so after watching TBL, I felt like I too could run a marathon! Though I need to get through Saturday's 5K first! Two days and a wake-up!

Hey folks! Anyone still working on the One Hundred Pushups??? I know we had talked about it and several people in earlier threads had started the program. Are you still doing it???
I have NO upper body strength, so I set myself up to do level one quantities, then set my program to repeat week 1, but at level two. Then I will follow with week 2, and retest. Well, my weeks are very slooow, because I started 11/17, and just now finished wk 1, level two. Part of the reason is that I also swim and do arm work on strength machines, so sometimes my arms are too sore for a decent effort. And sometimes a overworked upper body affects my energy level to do decent running. Right now, I am only doing "girly" pushups, and I imagine if I do the whole program that way, I will have to turn around and do it again with "real" pushups. At least my upper body strength will be better by then. Actually today was the first day my back "form" was good enough. Workout total = 44 pushups. I'm doing the 200 situps also, same way - today=71.
Tonights forecast is still for a pre-dawn dusting of snow, with a breezy 34 deg at race time. I hope they have hot chocolate at the finish! Today is total rest day, except for a long walk with the dog.

Yeah I'm doing the 100pushups too. Tonight I'm doing Week 2 Day 2. I have to do it on my knees because my core is not very strong (I ranked under Poor when I tried the 200 situps test). Plus I have some minor lower back issues and I just don't feel like killing myself over it. But I do very much enjoy watching my numbers get higher! And I've upped the weights on the machines at the gym, so between the two, I'm going to have some very sexy shoulders by spring!
Tomorrow is my 1st 5K. Gonna be in the low 20's at race time. I'm doing it for the fun....even if it is freaking crazy cold out! Good luck Jasmine on your run!

Just completed the aptly name Frosty Freeze 5K Run. It was 34 with a wind chill of 25, after snowing early this morning. I had my full cold weather (long) gear on, but took off the windbreaker and gloves about .3 mile into the race. I set up a nice steady pace - but this time I had people behind me somewhat, the whole time, and even passed two (LOL)!!
I ran the whole way & did the same splits as last week- 1mi=14:30, 2mi=30:03, so I was real happy. I finished 3 sec faster than last week - 46:33, or a 15:01 pace, though the course was a little more challenging. This was the same course as the first race that I did (walk/jog) in August, at > 62 mins. Such dramatic improvements won't be as easy in the future. I got 2nd (of 3) in my age group, with about a dozen behind me.
Funny thing is, they give gift certificates to the local running store as age group awards, and I'm almost breaking even with entry fees, because there are so few women in my age bracket, and I get a medal and certificate (HA HA!).
There is another race in 2 wks but I haven't decided to do it yet. In the meantime, I can open my new running shoes and start breaking them in. I hope everyone else who is racing today has had a good race, and a nice WARM post-race.
P.S. Anybody got chaffed ta-ta's?

Ha, warm race my ace!
It was in the mid-20's and sunny when I ran today. It was the Jingle Bells run in Cincinnati...so many people were wearing red and Christmas getups. I was appropriately layered and only had to take my fleece headband and gloves off. Quite hilly....the first one was a gradual hill on a bridge going over the Ohio River. Which meant that there was some downhill too! Ran the entire time...no walking or stopping (even to pick up someone's lost credit card. I'm such a loser...). The scenery was very industrial...lots of train tracks, gravel piles, overpasses and very old buildings. I didn't ache at all. During the last leg when I could see the finish line, I started to get a side stitch, but my best friend started yelling my name and it totally went away (which makes me wonder if it's physical or mental).
The results aren't posted yet, but my time was about 36:15. Best time yet, for just about all of my runs. I think today will count toward Week 1 Day 3 of OHR, with extra credit! Congrats Jasmine on your race! Cool to know that a couple of us from the online group ran today, likely at the same time! (My race started at 10am EST).
After the race I changed and went with my brother to a restaurant and gulped down two handcrafted beers, a burger and fries. Hows THAT for post-run eatin'!
Happy day!

Glad that you had a good race - you finished in a great time! As for after my race - I got stuck doing something in the AM, so I treated myself to Taco Bell (its been forever) for a late lunch. What I really want is IHOP. My legs were a little sore - I creaked around like a little old lady, but now I'm walking better.
How about we make this thread longer next time? Maybe 2 wks or rest of the month? For better continuity & maybe more will join.

Great run, Amy! I did the Cincy Jingle today too. My friend and I finished at about 41. Why oh why haven't they posted the official results yet? It was a nice run, huh?
Ok...here are the official results: 35:43! In the runner category I ranked 763 out of 1025.
We'll definitely to to 2 weeks starting Monday. No problemo! (and those of you who post on the Cto5K thread...make sure the folks who move on from there know about this one! I can only get really involved in one thread at a time. Though I will post in that one about the race, to encourage the others.)
Smell ya later!
