    Re: 200+ Pound Club!

@Rev - Sorry about the flu!  No fun!  Get better!

Was able to complete my long run of 7+ miles this morning so I am still pretty on track with Hal's Half.  Should be ready for end of Feb....yikes!  It was so cold!  I couldnt help reflect while I was waiting for my windsheild to unthaw that last year at this same point I was probbaly passed out on the couch sitting in chex mix and sugar cooking crumbs waiting for some cinnamon rolls to finish baking!  HA!  Instead 8am sitting in a cold car about to go running in 28 degree weather!  Who is ready to flip the switch???

Q for everyone on shoes!  I know its controversial about brand and fit, but I would love to know what everyone else is doing!  I have Nike Vomero +4's.  They have held up well.

I am considering trying to add a new insert to see if I can extend the life.  I am cheap!  Anyone else tried changing inserts (I am talking the $20 kind) after a few months of shoe use?

Merry belated Christmas and early Happy New Year!

    Re: 200+ Pound Club!

@Chris - probably won't prolong the shoe life itself, but custom fit ones will help your running form and they last a while and can be transfered from shoe to shoe.  I haven't sprung for the $80 to get some from RoadRunnerSports yet, but I'm going to soon to give it a try.

Missed my long run yesterday thanks to Christmas travel, but I was fortunate enough to be able to take half a day off today and get in a 17.6 mile run.  I could feel every scoop of yams, every piece of turkey and gravy, and every piece of that pumkin pie I indulged in dragging me down the whole way.  The run was tougher that it should have been and that has me a little worried.  I officially registered for the Arizona Rock n' Roll marathon in three weeks, paid for my plane ticket and the hotel, and am just hoping I can get a faster time at this one.  After that run, it is three weeks off (well, running 5K's 5 times a week to try and keep some of the training) to give my body some rest before training for the other 6 races (4 marathons and 2 halfs) this year.  I've committed to going after the coveted "Rock Legend" medal from the competitor group this year.

One good thing about the run - I got to play with my new toy.  The wife gave me a Garmin 310XT for Christmas.  Now all I need is that bike so I can start training for Ironman Coeur d'Alene in June of 2012.  That's right, I've committed (or should be committed) to a full Ironman.

I am 62 and want to run a 5k in May with my kids and spouses-- been active just not running. I am very nervous about this decision but am determined to do it for my health and to support the kids who are really into fitness. Wish me luck! I need to do something or soon I'll just be another old fat man!

    @rev - hope you're feeling better!!

@wesyoung - Congrats on the new baby coming!!  You're life is about to change!   I think 80 in 8 months sounds doable.  Good luck with everything!!

    _____

I've missed hanging out here!!!  I just haven't had much to report lately.  Things keep getting in the way of me running and it's KILLING me!!!  I've only ran like twice this month!  I'm almost scared to jump back into it!  First I had that proceedure and the doc said I wasn't allowed to do anything for a week, then I busted myself on the ice and bruised my foot all up again...then I threw out my back/hips and couldn't walk standing up straight for days before getting in with the chiropractor.  I'm feeling MUCH better now....just afraid of pushing myself to hard to fast maybe??  Having the hips out of line is not fun and you really feel it when you try to run.  I actually tried to run the same day my issues started.  Things just didn't feel right and I stopped at a mile....then later that night all it took was picking up my toddler to throw me completely out of whack.

So..I was supposed to start week 8.  I'm not even sure how to start again.  Maybe I'll just go with little expectation and see how I feel....even if I mostly walk.  I have got to get moving again!!  Any suggestions?

    Re: 200+ Pound Club!

@wesyoung : You can do it, just keep your eye on the goal and take one day at a time.. make sure to indulge every now and then, complete abstinance from tempting foods can be a recipe for disaster (in my experience). *congratulations on your kiddo too!!*

@ktface : No biggie on running.. life got in the way, but you're back here and wanting to keep going, and that's awesome! You will not have lost all of your fitness despite having run only twice.. the rebound to where you were might take a week or two. You might just notch back a week on the C25K program and see how it feels.. you'll be surprised how you'll be able to get back to where you were. Of course start slowly and ease into it, jumping right back into running is still every bit of traumatic on the body and you don't want to risk injury by doing too much too soon. You can do it!!

    ---------------

Still on vacation, and still fighting off the flu.. its mainly just a cough and some sore throat. Jumping on the treadmill for another 5 miles here after I've had some coffee.

    Good day to you!

@ Chris, I had no idea you used to be heavy!  WOW!  Congrats on the weight loss!  You look great.  I saw your pic and I was like "hey, I know him" ..well not really but, your pic is on my Running Into Shape Wall of Fame.  I can't wait to read your blog and learn more about you.   As, you probably know I'm training for my 1st half marathon as well with the LLS Team in Training.  Best of Luck, I'm so glad to see that you're still running.  You're an inspiration to us all!

@Travis:   Thanks for the note on the inserts!  Congrats on your new toy!  I got a 405 and am ecstatic with it already!  I hear you on the feeling every scoop of food!  my post Christmas run was a BONK at some points due to date filled cookies in the belly!  lol  Glad you are comitted to the Phoenix.  Runners World called that one of the best locations in the last issue I think.

@Jimmy:   You can so do it!  If I can...anyone can!

@Katie:  Be careful!  If I was you I would try to run about half of what you were able to before and at a much slower pace.   A nice trial run.  Then you can properly assess things.  Just what I would do though!  Take care of yourself!

@Carli:  Glad you found this thread!  Great group of people!  You are very inspirational to alot of people and your podcasts helped me through that timing!  God Bless!

    Re: 200+ Pound Club!

@Jimmyangelino - My dad (67) is my running partner. We are planning a family 5K with the grandkids, too, maybe this fall in a Turkey Trot. My mom is thrilled that my dad is doing this with me!

I ran my W9D1 today. We went 36! minutes because we felt good, and covered almost 2.5 miles. The 15:20 pace was our fastest yet! 3.1 miles is looking less scary all the time. I'm sitting here with ice packs on my shins in a state of euphoria. Woohoo! I am also down 3 lbs from last week to 242. I actually sprinted the last two minutes or so (well, a sprint pace for me anyway, lol). I can't believe it.

So the sensible thing to do is back down a bit for Day 2 to only what we can cover in 30 minutes, right?

So, I officially signed up for a 1/2 marathon in February.  I am a little nervous, but super excited that I have a goal in mind.  I have been able to run nonstop for 20 min so far, and did 55 min with only one stop last week, so it is looking good.   I don't plan on running the whole thing, but would like to be able to run the majority of it.  Thanks for all of the tips on here.
