Arrggh it's a Stress Fracture...now what?

Okay so what I thought might be a bad bruise and then hoped was a shin splint turned out to be what I knew in my gut all along was a stress fracture.  Now that I have decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and I know for sure what it is what do I do? I am doing yoga and p90x to work on my core strength and I have some very old equipment (a cheesy weigh bench and a cardio fit contraption) and some pilates dvds.  I have a bicycle but I'm afraid to do much of anything with my leg until I talk to an ortho next week.  I know there are exercises I can do to strenghten my shin muscles but its it too soon to do them and what are they?  Most importantly, I've been running about a year and a half and the only place I really have to run is asphalt...how do I keep this from happening again?

Any experienced assistance is much appreciated.

Srry   Already_gone...how long do you have to stop running? I have found that cross training (biking, eliptical, swimming) helps to maintain fitness when you cant run. That is how I finished my training for the Sarasota Half Marathon in March...I had to stop running for a month prior, cause of the shin splints..But I was able to complete the half thanx to cross training and Interval running (Jeff Galloway)..Good Luck...keep posting on your progress, it helps to know how and what others are doing to prevent and treat injuries....thanx for sharing! Speedy recovery!  Rita.

    Re: Arrggh it's a Stress Fracture...now what?

Hey already-gone, just wondering what your symptoms were? I still have tenderness in my left shin, inner part about 6-7inches above the ankle..it doesn't get worse, yet doesn't get better.. just there all the time. I assume that it is not a stress fracture cause i have been running and figure it would get worse if I continue to run.  I think it may be strained or scarred muscle and/or ligament from previous injury that is just taking long time to heal.. When you experienced discomfort that led you to get radiological studies, I also assume the pain was so great that you could not run anymore?  would appreciate more detail if you don't mind sharing...THnax

    Re: Arrggh it's a Stress Fracture...now what?

The latest Running Times (June, page 24) reported on a small study indicating that those with stronger calf muscles had a lower incidence of lower leg stress fractures.  So overall strengthening of the lower leg would be in order.   I doubt the running surface had much effect.

As for exercise meanwhile, what did your doctor recommend?  Usually anything weight-bearing is out for 6 - 8 weeks.

    Re: Arrggh it's a Stress Fracture...now what?

Well Donna, after hearing all your details, I've decided to finally go see a sports ortho (appt this wed.), cuz my left shin is acting out again as I increase my miles and other cross training activities.... thought I was over the injury phase, maybe there is a fracture, idk.  Guess I should get out of denial-ville and find out for sure, before I do real damage.  I did the "hop" test sunday and it hurt alot to hop on my left but not on the right...granted I was sore after training sat... ran 6miles (about a mile of hill, ringlling bridge sarasota), then biked 18miles. Sun. swam 1/2 mile...today, monday, I did nothing and it is sore, mostly in that one spot mid-inner shin, even when I walk. Its not excruciating, just nagging. I can hop on it today, but It hurts too much to hop more than 2-3 times, on left leg..and it is a nagging soreness each time I take a step.  The right shin is just slightly sore, occasionally.  Bummer...Guess I too will find out what the deal is...Keep me posted on your research and other findings..Thanx...Rita

When I had a stress fracture in my foot earlier this year (which still causes me pain now and then... grrrrrr!) I traded off between bike (recumbant) and swimming. Also you could try taking calcium pills, that's what my daughters boyfriend was given when he got a stress fracture in his shin while he was in Army basic training.

    Re: Arrggh it's a Stress Fracture...now what?

I experienced a stress fracture in my foot back in Feb.  To stay in shape, I swam, biked and took spinning classes.  I highly suggest checking out a supportive shoe for the future to prevent injury.  I swear by supportive Saucony shoes.
