Good question Sara:
"How popular is baseball in Australia?"
I do not have exact stats, but I'd say that Baseball in Australia as a sport ranks no higher than 10-12 in terms of participation levels compared to other sports here.
Roughly only 1 in 100 Australians have ever played baseball as a Junior or Senior, a lot higher ratio for womens softball though.
At my Sons school out of roughly 120 grade 6 kids 10-11 yrs old, maybe only 5 or 6 or have ever played baseball from U8 age up. There are only 2 or 3 kids out of the 120 that are now playing at the Little League Majors Level from his school including himself.
I hope that the new Little League can help promote the game here for higher participation levels over the next few years.
Interesting. I wasn't as surprised by the Australia numbers as I was about your sons school numbers. I assumed way more boys his age were playing baseball. But I do agree...hopefully the numbers will keep going up, it's such a great opportunity for them.
