coolbikermom:  All the best of luck to you in your 10K tomorrow.  Trust your training and you will do fine.  Don't let others set your pace for you; set your own and you'll pass lots of runners who went out too fast too soon.

For all of you, I've attached a picture of my son, daughter-in-law and myself with our finishers' medals from last weeks Des Moines Marathon.

Jasmine:  YOU GO GIRL!!!  I'm very impressed with your pro-active attitude and action-oriented mind-set .......... I think running events should be mandatory for evey town across the country!  It certainly would boost the local economy with out of staters who travel through and on a whim, decide to participate (like I often do!); then sharing the experiences with others along their travels; who knows:  they may make the trip back the following year!!  You are a true inspiration, Jasmine!

In our neck of the woods, my niece and I participate in the annual running series every summer with a set fee (payable a few months prior) for runners who want to do all the runs. Some of the runs will allow on-site registration while others won't due to maximum runners allowed in the forest trails (in our case) or other other limitations beyond their control.  There are raffles after each race with the race packets and at the end of the series, a raffle for those who did at least 5 of the runs in the series.  Believe me, it was a total surprise for me when I actually won 2, yes 2, raffle prizes (a gift certificate to the local running store and a blu-ray DVD player/recorder!!).  I should have bought a lottery ticket THAT day, bummer!!  LOL!! :()  "Awards" are not always in the form of medals; for example:  a benefit for a charter school had the students make art on wooden plaques as rewards.  Each race benefits one of the organizations in the community or an organization/business will host the running event.  Small communities are totally committed to such causes and the people love the excitement of the events.  Just thought I share.

Steve - thanks for sharing the pic and congratulations to all of you

Jasmine - That is so awesome of you to take on that project!  I live in an area where there are very few runs also.  There is one coming up next Saturday (30th) call All Souls race that has a 5k and a 7 mile.  I'm planning on doing the 5k even though I'll still be walking most of it.  There was a half marathon in August, and a 5k in May.  I think that's all there has been in the past year.  One hour away, in a small community there is usually a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving which I am planning to do.  That's the only event I've been able to find any information in there.  We live in a rural part of the state.  2 hours away is the city of Las Cruces,. 2nd largest place in the state I think.  Or close to it.  But there isn't very many there either.  Other than that my choices are to go to Albuquerque for more choices where there are fairly frequent races but it's 4 1/2 hours away, Tucson AZ which is 4 hours away, or El Paso TX which is about 3 1/2 hours away.  Anything over the Las Cruces 2 hours means I have to go stay overnight the night before, which can get expensive.

I'm still battling the sciatica, with good days and bad days but the prednisone has been helping.  I saw a segment on a recent Dr. Oz show about physical activity increasing chemicals in our bodies that help fight chronic inflation.  I think that's why when I get out early in the morning and walk 3 or 4 miles my pain is greatly reduced unless I sit much (more than about 5 or 10 minutes in a straight upright position) or something else that triggers it.  I'm still working on the c25k program and slowly trying to build my running stamina back up.

To anyone having races this weekend, Good Luck!!!

Steve - I have 2 pairs of almost brand new shoes that I'm rotating so it's not a shoe problem,  I have been dealing with shin splints which I think were aggrivated by all the walking I did in Orlando and again at Disneyland this past Sunday.  I haven't actually done the Silver Strand HM yet.  I have heard from others that it's a flat course and someone told me yesterday that there can be really strong headwinds that you have to battle sometimes because it's on the coast.  I'll let you know how it goes.  And great picture!

Jasmine - that is so cool that you're organizing the 5k/1mi event.  You'll have to let us know when and where.

LindaKay - I feel your pain (literally) with the sciatica.  I'm battling it right now and I'm really scared it's going to mess up my long run tomorrow.  It made it really uncomfortable after about 3 miles last week.  I can't seem to find anything that relieves it.

I don't know if this will help anyone with sciatica, but it is a pain I've battled for years, until last fall.  Our local hospital had a seminar on it and the neurosurgeon that spoke talked of a little thing called an X-STOP.  It's made by Medtronic.  He put 2 of them in my spine - they just keep the vertebrae from resting against each other and pinching the sciatic nerve.  That screaming pain shooting down my right leg was gone overnight.  The surgery is minimally invasive (an inch-long incision) and usually done on an outpatient basis, but Medicare wants us older folks to stay in the hospital overnight.  I walked out the next morning, but waited about a week before I started running and distance walking again.

Donna - thanks for the information.  It's only been about 3 months and I waited about a month and a half before seeing a chiropractor which helped some, then just about 2 1/2 weeks ago went to the dr and started pt.  But I will definitely keep this in mind if it continues!  Mine seems to be starting from the hip because I have no pain in my back and they think that part of the nerve is being pinched there but without an MRI, which they haven't done yet until they find out if the short-term prednisone and the pt done't correct it.  It's nice to know that there is an option like that though and that you were able to go back to running with this.

Coolbikermom - Congratualations!  I'll be popping over to the other thread to read the full report!

coolbikermom- Excellent 10K time!! It's so great that you are doing such a reasonable time.  It's still 10-15 mins fast than my 10K race time.  Actually my next 10K target time is 75 mins but I don't have any local races to test that on in the next 3 months.

Steve- great picture with your family and an excellent HM time.

Finally did my VLR today.  Actually ended up being an 11 mi run followed by a 2.1 mi walk back to the car.  I averaged 14.5-15mm pace for the first 11 miles, but then my knees started protesting and it became difficult to raise/bend my knees. I was barely able to shuffle/jog a few times, but mostly walked.  This was a basic flat course, so I didn't have the hill challenges that I had at the Nashville HM.  I used 50/50 Gatorade the whole time, and had 1 ShotBlock gel every 40-45 min. I did not develop the calf cramps, just achy knees.  However I wasn't fully rested, having run 6 mi on Thurs and spin cycle 1 hr yesterday. Time 3:25 hrs, only 2 mins less than Nashville HM. I had hoped to do 14mi today, but reached my limit early.

Coolbikermom: Way to go on your 10K! I bet it feels so great to finish your first 10K race and you finished with a great time. I look forward to reading your report.

    Steve: Love the picture

All: I ran another 5K today and finished in 30.02 (again). Wouldn't you think I could shave a measly 3 seconds off my time? Oh well, there is always next week. I did finish first in my age group.

@Jasmine - I'm very impressed with your HM time, if I am to believe you still weigh over 200?  That's pretty astounding, if you ask me!

@skirun - I understand your disappointment at not breaking 30 min. for your 5k, but honestly, the rest of us are probably green with envy.  I know I am!

I have a health issue that is most likely going to sideline me for awhile.   I think I might have shingles.  Am praying for a very mild case, if so.  Four nights of pain and very little sleep have left me exhausted and a bit disheartened.  And I was on such a roll with my exercise, and feeling so good, I just don't understand it.  Pretty sure I won't be doing the Graveyard Run next Saturday - I was so looking forward to that.

If anyone knows any holistic things to do for shingles, please share.  My body cannot tolerate drugs at. all., so I hate the thought of going to a dr. as they will just want to pump me full of them, most likely.
