Hi - I've been an on again off again runner for a "number of Years" (this is an Over 50 Thread right?).  Most of those years i went solo and I think that was the cause of my inconsistency.  I would train hard for a while, do a big event (typically a marathon), then "recover" for 6 months and try to start again.  About 5 years ago, i moved to Kentucky and was invited to join a group of people who ran every morning from the fitness center I joined.  Since that time, I have become much more consistent and getting close to the speeds I ran in my late 20's and early 30's (21:20 for the Anthem 5K in Louisville).  I truly believe having a group of people who are looking for you every morning and are there to encourage you and laugh with you even at 5:00 A.M. in January is the reason I feel as good about my running as I do.  The key is to find the right group.  We have a great mix of people, male and female, from the "youngsters" who are in the late 20's to early 30's up to us "old folks" in our mid to late 50' and 60's.  We do fun stuff outside of running as well like Breakfast after a long run and dinners which include our non-running spouses.  Not only does the group keep you motivated to run your best, they can also be your advisors to insure you recover properly from races and injury.  A dog is great, but they always want to run even if you shouldn't.

I am a big believer in cross training. For me it's the elliptical.

My usual routine is 4 days of running M,W,Th,Sa and the 30 to 45 minutes on the elliptical on the days in between.

So every day I am doing something, with the exception of the two days before  Half those I just rest with some easy walking usually associated with the race.

I attended the Healthy Living Expo in Knoxville today. It was senior day. Lots of ppl,  exhibits, and health screenings. I met Sherry Johnston from Season 10 Biggest Loser, pretty lady. Her daugther Ashley, the first runner up, was supposed to be there, but when I stopped by booth at noon, she had gone to lunch.....still gone to lunch at 1:30, still doing lunch at 2:30. Show ended at 3 pm. Must have been a big lunch.

Anyhow, all of the screening that I did turned out good. Matter of fact, the wii fitness one had my age at 39. Hmmm, if I could only erase 20 years of wrinkles from my face.

Since I have free passes, I think I'll take my daughter and grand daughter tomorrow. Maybe Ashley will decide to show up.

Have a great weekend and if anyone has any races planned.....run fast and have a ton of fun!!

WOW!  We sure have some talented runners in this "oldies" group!  I can't even be considered a runner right now, being as I got sidelined after barely making a start, but I am a runner at heart, dang it all!

I did manage to get some good exercise four out of the last five days, at least (thanks for the tough love, Steve!).  Mon - 3 miles walk on hills, Tues - 15 min. dance and 3 miles hilly walk, Wed - walked to the gym in 10-degree weather, warmed up 1.5 miles on the elliptical and then did a good weight training session, Thurs - just went shopping for a couple of hours, and Fri - 1.5 miles on the treadmill at an easy pace but a steady increase in incline up to "8",  then 2.5 miles in 30 min. on the elliptical.  I used to do 6 miles in under an hour on the elliptical last October, but I'm just going to be happy I can do anything at all and be content with that for now.  It does look like it's going to take some time to build my fitness back up, esp. if I keep having so many sleepless nights!

ETA:  Coolbikermom, you mentioned something about me entering some kind of race this spring for motivation.  Well, I've already shelled out a goodly sum for the Hospital Hill HM on June 3, but will probably have to walk it or maybe even have them downgrade me to the 10k instead, but we'll see.  I do know that running still causes me too much discomfort on "the shingles side" so I'm gonna have to wait until it's completely pain-free first.  So, I could go ahead and do a fun run in March or April but since I'd have to walk it I guess I'd rather it be a 10k so I could get in a decent training walk.  Maybe by this time next year I'll be planning some actual fun runs (one can only hope).  All this to say that if you happen to enter any 10k's in April or so, let me know and maybe I'll do that one too, as a walk.  It would be fun to meet you in person!

What a great idea, Susan!  I just found him on FB (never heard of him before) and am d/l the commitment certificate now.  If nothing else, it should inspire me to put on music and dance or walk the back stairs when I can't get out.

    Today's "big girl workout":

Walk to & from the gym the long way around, due to piles of snow = 1.5 mile

    Elliptal machine 1.5 mile

    45 min. weight training

    10 min. stretching

Unfortunately I was ravenous when I popped into the store to buy bananas tonight and wound up getting Chinese take-out for dinner.  I'm sure I'll be sorry tomorrow....

    KirkT:

I meant to ask you:  did your daughter run the 1/2 marathon in PHX too?  If so, how did she do?  Was she happy with her time?

    BTW everyone:

I registered for my second marathon:  the RnR on June 5 in San Diego!!

Can't wait ......... it feels like such a LONG ways from now ....... my plans for Nashville (April 30th) fell through and the next RnR is in June, I know there are other 'marathons' but I want to try to find a similiar course to PHX to compare my finish times. I am going to go nuts 'waiting' ......... but I'm sure I will find other trail races to train for the marathon.

And I am thinking of going to Seattle to do the 1/2 marathon later in the month, June 25!!

Also, found out that I was 5 MINUTES short of qualifying for the Boston Marathon!!  I was not thinking of that at all but interesting just the same.  My husband wants me to go for the Boston marathon next year so I guess I might as well.  I know I can do it under 4 hours ........... just got to stop taking pictures at various mile markers, and to stop calling people to let them know what mile marker I am at, LOL!

Di- Your marathon time was SPEEDY!  I love the fact that you were "slowed" because you took pictures and made phone calls! HA! Well, good luck on your plan to beat 4 hours - maybe you WILL become a "BQ"!  Sorry however that you won't make it to Nashville.  I admire you for doing all of this traveling for events.  I am sticking closer to home until I have HM times that make it worthwhile to go elsewhere - unless of course we are talking about Hawaii!

Marie: Your times are so GREAT!! Way to GO!  Maybe someday, if there is a 5K or 10K in Chattanooga (its halfway) we can meet up and race that event.

(BTW - 100 day challenge ain't happening for me anymore - unless they can be non-consecutive (LOL) - I'm out)

I've been away for a while because I was having one of my work & mental "time-outs" - where other pressures (plus weather) befuddle the brain and self-discipline and kept me from getting in all of my mileage and other workouts that I needed in the last 10 days.  But my work deadline is past, and I have no major events between now and my HM in 3 weeks - so no excuses!  I've got to finish my mileage build-up to 10+ miles, plus add in my tempo, interval and hill training, before I taper. Today it is 40, cloudy and calm, so it is a perfect day to attempt the very long run that I've been putting off.  Just got to go with the flow...

Jack, I thought the same thing! Jasmine, take it easy and enjoy the journey.

I had an interesting run this morning. I was a little overdressed for conditions (short sleeved shirt over long sleeved shirt & 3/4 length running pants), with the weather at 53 and humid. I'd eaten a small dinner last night and didn't have much to eat before setting out for my run. I was feeling good and went a little too hard on the first three miles. By mile four I was red in the face, sweating, and beginning to feel a little queasy. I pulled my short sleeved shirt off and rolled up the remaining sleeves. It was at that point that I noticed that my vision was a little off and I was having trouble focusing - not a good sign! I knew I hadn't eaten well during the previous 24 hours so I had brought a gu pack even though I was only going just over seven miles. I sucked down the gu and 8 oz of water and slowed to a walk for a few minutes. I began to run again (downhill, hate to waste those) but I realized that I was spending an awful lot of time with my eyes closed! I concentrated on keeping my eyes open and letting the gu kick in. By mile 5.5 I was feeling fine again and I finished my seven miles. So, lesson learned! I'm going to get more serious about nutrition again.

I'm coming up on a year of running soon. I've made so much progress and I'm so happy that I took that first step toward fitness.

Eating right is very important all week and after long runs.

Also keeping hydrated all week not just when you exercise.
