Di2079- sooo incredibly jealous that you're doing San Diego!!! That was my first/only half I've done with my son that lives there and was on the calendar for a repeat till our move date got moved up!

Nice course, one long incline other than that pretty flat, the course brought marathoners and half runners together a few times than marathoners split off again. Last year the course ended at Sea World in Mission Bay and that was the only negative I heard from people the next day at the airport, there wasn't any grass to sit/stretch on afterwards just asphalt parking lot and marathoners had to finish by running around Fiesta Island which when the sun came out became very hot...so prepare for that, the amount of people cheering and bands playing made it a blast...I also spent time on "rememberance hill" looking at pictures and stories of people who had lost their battle with leukemia/lymphoma...very moving but well worth the time..i too took pictures and just enjoyed the whole experience. I was hoping that this year I could concentrate more on my time...but you will love it and lucky you will be running with my son,his girlfriend and her mother!!!!

Re: 50 and over, 5k and beyond ?

Don't worry too much about me overdoing it...  There is "the plan" and then there is what will REALLY happen. LOL!

Today I was finally able to go out and do a very long run (10.5 miles), because it had been put off too long and there were no more excuses.  It actually was a very good run (14:18mm ave) 40 deg, overcast and calm, but even with tech tights, at the end - it felt like my legs were naked.  During my cool down walk, my legs started to tighten up, and my stretching didn't help too much.  I got a bad calf cramp in my rt leg when I tried to drive, so I had to pull over, raise the leg and massage it.  I'm still trying to work out the electrolytes or whatever it takes to stop this!

I will only do one more very long run before the HM, and maybe a couple of 4-8 mile runs that have hills (cause the HM course has 4 mi of hills in the middle), then do shorter interval runs at the gym on bad weather days.  I am going to cut WAY back during the last week, after working hard the next 2 wks.

Stupid program keeps dumping me off. GRRRR

urun2me:  You learned an important lesson about proper hydration before a run.  I've found that I need to drink 12-16 oz. of water about 30 minutes before I start a longer run, along with a Power Gel.  I take a water bottle with Gatorade G2 powder and another two gels with me.  I have laid out most of my routes, regardless of distance, to go through a particular city park with rest rooms and a water fountain.

Congrats to the Pack for winning three road games and going to the Big Game.

    Hi LindaKay228:

I registered for the 1/2 marathon in the Shiprock marathon event for May 7, 2011.  I actually wanted to do the marathon but I decided to run the marathon in the RnR in San Diego, June 5, instead.

Even thought about running both marathons back to back ........... but that seems a bit too gung-ho, too close for sufficient recovery time ........ even for me........ without risking injury from overstressing my muscles/joints on the darn paved road.

Moreover, I hope to finish under 4 hrs in my second marathon on a course comparable to Phoenix so thus, my decision to run the marathon in San Diego and go for a strong finish.

Anyway, just thought I let you know.  If you're participating, maybe we'll meet there.

BTW:  I am thinking of running the 1/2 marathon in the Jemez Mt trail race on May 21st in Los Alamos, NM.  It is two weeks after the Shiprock race (paved course) but I know I can handle a second 1/2 marathon.  I just love northern NM area and it is a TRAIL course so it will be so much more 'invigorating' and 'challenging' in that environment and altitude which I absolutely crave.

I really wanted to run in the Batann Death March as well ............. but March is the month that our first grandbaby will be bursting into the world, due date March 16th!!!

So, I am taking staying close to home.

I do have a 1/2 marathon trail race, March 12th, close to Phoenix where my daughter lives.  Thought it would be smarter to run a race before the grandbaby arrives than after.

Still looking for a longer trail race for April, a 25k or a 30k would be ideal............. hmmmm, maybe a marathon early in the month........?? on a trail course would be awesome!!!  which is on my 'TO DO' list for 2011.

I am so fortunate that my business trips sometimes allows me to schedule and participate in some running events elsewhere, one of the perks of being your own boss!

I am going for a short run TODAY on my beloved mountain trails, and then do some cross-training .......... finally!  Been resting all week after my marathon debut ............ this is so depressing .........and I am going nuts!! Lifted weights a couple of days and stretches but need some 'intensity' or I will not be a happy camper    LOL!

Gotta start getting back into the 'groove' for my next race:  Feb. 20th, a 1/2 marathon trail race near Phoenix.  WOOHOO!!

Hope your workouts are going great!

I can't begin to tell you how much I envy your fitness level, Di!  I'm rooting for you to get that 4:00 marathon!  I had a feeling you'd be going crazy during your recovery week(s) since you're so used to the long workouts.

Yesterday was very cold and damp so I stayed in and just did my minimum "commitment 30 min." on the backstairs and dancing to music.  Today's workout was 5 hilly miles wearing my new YakTracs.  Whew!  That certainly felt like a workout and a half!  I can't say I like the feeling of the YT's as they make my feet hurt, but being out in the bright sunshine was wonderful.  I hope all of our snow melts this week.  It's supposed to be 40 on Friday, so I think it very well might, esp. if it stays sunny all week.

Row, row, row your boat/rowing machine/whatever.  I have found that about 2,500 to 3,000 meters (1.5 to 2 miles) on the rowing machine at the gym is a great cardio and muscle warmup for running and strength/core workouts.  For a long time I used the elliptical and I know many people use it, but I've found that I prefer the rower.  Ours have adjustable resistance and the display will show total meters, elapsed time and average speed per 500 meters.

Laurie:  I think I would kill for some 40-degree days, especially with some sun.  Our weather here in Chicago is 20s and cloudy all week, with another dip into the deep freeze over the weekend.  I've not tried running in my YakTrax, only winter hiking with our cycling club.  Since that's usually on snow, I haven't had any problem with sore feet.

Di:  I'm glad you have lots of HMs in your area with decent weather at this time of year.  We don't have any until mid-March, and the weather for it is usually bad, so I've never signed up for it.  My first HM will be early May in Kenosha, WI.

Note to KIRKT:  You may already know about the Wisconsin Marathon/HM in Kenosha on May 7th.  Registration is open.  Last year's combined field was 3,300.

Di2079 - Congratulations first on the new grandbaby!!!  Don't blame you for sticking close to home!

I haven't registered yet for the Shiprock half yet but will be doing it in the next week or so.  I will also make reservations that weekend to ride the Durango-Silverton train ride the next day.  Last year I did that and really enjoyed it even though the summer season wasn't opening until the weekend following the race and so it only went half way and not all the way to Silverton.  Last year the Shiprock race was on May 1st.  I'm hoping, although I haven't checked yet, that since it's a week later the train ride will be open for the full ride.  Since Shiprock has no motels I stayed in Farmington and Durango was only about 45 minutes away.  It was a ride I'd always wanted to do and look forward to tying them together again this year.  I'm not ready to run the whole thing yet, but will do some running and some walking.  Last year it was mostly walking but I thought doing the half in 3 hours and 4 minutes at a fast walk was a pretty good feat.  If I hadn't had some setbacks that kept me from running I would probably be further along toward running more of it but it was an event I really enjoyed and like the area so I really want to do it again and see if I can do it faster.  Last year had really cold weather for that race too.  I went through snow showers the day before in Gallup.  But it was a strange storm that went through the state that weekend.  We had been having good weather in Silver City, but they had high winds and nasty weather while I was up in Shiprock too.  They had the annual Tour of the Gila bike race here while I was gone and the bikers had to battle high wind gusts and much colder weather than it had been a week before, or even a few days after that weekend.

I will be signing up this week for the Bataan Death March Memorial too.  I would like to do the Jimez one but just can't fit that many events out of town into my budget.  But hopefully we can try to set up to catch up with each other at Shiprock (I don't mean on the race course!  You'll be way ahead of me LOL).  It would be great to meet you face to face.

I did a 5k on Sunday in Las Cruces.  I'm also doing a Cupid's Chase 5k on Feb 12th there.  I'm still working on the shorter races and look forward to maybe one day being able to go as far as you can.  Until less than a year ago I hadn't even thought seriously of running.  Maybe by next year I can make it to the RnR in Phoenix.  Who knows where this journey will take me.

Mimi- I agree... responding to these forum threads has been kind of iffy - it keeps twitching and saying we've got to add a title or some other stuff.  It has happened to me a lot lately - most times I've been able to recover most of my text, but sometimes not, and it is frustrating because it take 2-3 times as long to get something to "stick".  I hate "spilling my guts out" to the forum, and then losing it!!!

Don't worry about me overdoing it.  I've got enough laziness and procrastination in my bones, to foil my plans frequently, plus I do get tired and don't go out.  I plan to take it easy during taper with some volunteer work during both taper weeks, and I have a haircut and pedicure scheduled then too.

The only problems I've been having with the board lately is that often I get email notifications saying there are posts on here, but they don't show up until hours later.

But thanks for the heads up.  I think I'll start copying my whole post before I hit "Post Message."  That way I can just paste it back in if the board loses it.

I'm sitting here trying to get the gumption to go pump some iron.  It's a pretty day and everything and a whole 36 degrees so I don't know why I feel so lifeless today except that I'm still not sleeping well most nights.

ETA:  I wound up walking another five miles instead of going in a stuffy old gym to work out.  It's 42 degrees out there!!!!!!!!!!  I was very slow today, but who cares on a day like this?

    Mimi,

I see that you and I are scheduled to both run the azalea trail in Mobile.  That must mean that you must be close to me.  I'm in southeastern Louisiana, but my sister lives in Foley, al.  She and I run most races together.  Have you heard about the Gulf Coast Half series.  The first is in Pensacola the latter part of April.  The second one is in Mandeville LA in October.  Really good runs.

It is the same course that I ran a HM on a few weeks ago. Beautiful scenery. The sport beans taste okay. My problem with them is that you have to drink alot of water with them and that is hard to do during a run for me. Also, they seem to give me a bit of a tummy upset. But, they may not do that to anyone else. I had a whole box of them, but someone has already spoken for them. I will be glad to send you a few packs if you want so that you can try them before you buy.
