I did a Cupid's Chase 5k today in Las Cruces NM.  This was only the 2nd year they had that event in Las Cruces.  There were 296 participants, which they were really excited about because they said last year there were only 89 total.  Next year they're hoping for 600.

It was a lot of fun and there was a Mariachi band playing before and after.  It was in historic Old Mesilla, just outside of Las Cruces.  A small historic town with little shops downtown and narrow one way streets with farming just outside of it.  Part of the run was along a outside of a field on the road.  I'm still not up to running the whole 5k because the cold weather just chilled my motivation, even though I could use the treadmill at the gym.  I've got to kick it up and get serious though.  I did it in 39:54, which I was shooting for under 40 minutes and just made it.  I'm slow, but there were quite a few slower than me.  And a lot quite a bit faster than me LOL!  I enjoyed cheering on those who came in as much as 20 minutes after me, because I get excited when people get out and move, even it not fast (like me).  The events around my area are small and I don't know what I'd do in a 5k with a few thousand or more people.  The only thing I did with 5000 people was the Bataan Death March 15 mile (there is also a full marathon) last year.  I'm doing that next month but mostly walking.  It was a great day and I had a good time and glad I got out there and did it even if I am slow.

KIRKT:  I just go my foam roller for the ITB.  I watched some videos on how to use it and.....OUCH!!!  My gosh, how it hurts!!  Of course, the videos that I watched said it would hurt and also said the worse your ITB was, the more it would hurt.  So mine is in bad shape (which I knew because if I lie on it very long when sleeping, it will wake me up).  Anyway, I did just 5 rolling up and down on the ITB on each side.   I figure if I can work up by 1 every other day, I might survive.  hahahahahahaha  The roller was awesome, though, on quads, hamstrings, gluteals, back, etc.   It might be my best friend.     If you have any extra hints for me, pleas share.

    Work into it slowly.

    Re: 50 & over

Just a quick check in to let you know that Mimi & I completed the Birmingham Half Marathon today.  Her time was around 2:40-ish, and my (watch) time was 3:02:02.  I didn't quite beat 3 hours, but I DID average < 14mm pace, which was my goal.  And NO leg cramps!!  My mind is too befuddled to prep a race report right now, but suffice it to say, it was great to meet Mimi, and run on such a great course on a beautiful spring-like day. Glad to hear most everyone is doing well.

    Re: 50 & over

Well done Jo Ann and Mimi! I'm so excited for you. Hope you feel great today and even better tomorrow.  Happy Valentines Day to all. We had a beautiful weekend here in south Texas and expect temperatures in the 70's this week. I guess that means getting out for a run a little earlier than recently. I'm pushing my miles up gradually again, but no run on my calendar. My long run this week was 9.18 miles, the longest I've run since my half in November. It felt great, unlike my runs earlier in the week. I should know by now not to let the "bad" runs get me down. For the most part they are few and far between so I need to be grateful and appreciate all of those "good" runs. Earlier this week my pace was sluggish and my breathing hard to control. Saturday felt much better and even produced the fastest mile in a training run. My splits got faster through mile six, then held pretty steady.   May the wind be at your back all week! Happy running.

I am training for the Southern Indiana Classic Marathon in April, my goal is to run the entire distance without having to stop and walk. I do not have anything in my plate until the Chicago Marathon in October, I will probably look for a 1/2 marathon to do in between as a warm up to Chicago, my goal is to run Chicago fast enough to Qualify for Boston.

I have started a blog to document my journey from a over weight, out of shape couch potato to a marathon runner. I would appreciate any and all comments, critiques, suggestions, constructive criticisms, etc. because my goal is to to make this a really good runner's blog, especially for those of us over 50.

    Kirk ....... and Art,

The calendar I have for the RnR series has Chicago on August 21st, not the 14th.

I was thinking about doing Chicago but I think I might do Pikes Peak in Colorado instead (?) ........ the 1/2 marathon.

My next marathon is June 5, RnR in San Diego.

As before, my training includes running a HM each month with a couple of 10ks thrown in till then ........ YAY!!

I will be running the Boston Marathon in 2012 .....my goal for next year, finish under 4 hrs .... I know I can qualify ....... I was only 5 minutes off from 'qualifying' for it from my January marathon (2011) but I wasn't thinking about Boston, and didn't know I was that close; just having a blast, taking pictures and calling frens/family during my walk breaks ........ crazy!

Next race for me is next Sunday, Feb. 20th, a 1/2 marathon trail/paved course, it seems ........ never done this one before.  Can't wait!

In the meantime, finally had our first Ladies of Harley Ride today!!  Yes!! I'm soooo ready to de-stress by taking 'ride breaks' (during work), haha. Daytime temps was in the 50s; got kinda chilly on the way home as the sun was setting but too exhilarated to complain about it, LOL!!

    HAPPY AND SAFE RUNNING, EVERYONE!
