Joseph sounds like the same spot I had issues with

Rcuriel, Good for you!  Sounds like you've got your running on a good track right now.  I only have the Bikilas, but I like them for when I'm not out BF.

Satuday morning I have my first race of the year, a fairly level out and back 10 miler in Kutztown, PA. It looks like it's not going to be the nicest sort of morning, with temps about 31 or so and maybe some snow or drizzle.  Oh, well.  I plan to take it easy, as a sort of fun, slightly faster distance workout in prep for my HM in a month.

Re: the sore calf:  Mine gets sore in the same place you described, I think -  about 4" below the knee crease and slightly to the outside.  I can feel a well defined knot or band of muscle there.  It's getting a few days to rest and lots of massage with arnica before the run.

    Run well!

I had a lot of  fun and ran a good race at the Making Tracks 5K in Anniston, AL. I was fortunate to set a pr of 23:14, and place third in my age group. I think we had about 250 runners. This race is at the Anniston Army Depot, (military and tank rebuild facility), and they put on a great race. I'm back at work on my 12 hr shift. I'll get off at 6 am and be running the Talladega 2100 HM at the Talladega Superspeedway at 7:30. I'll have to dig deep to find the energy to pull it off. Both of these are great races and if you can put them on your schedule. The Talladega 2100 will be a Fall race next year. Have a great weekend folks.

Kirk, thanks for the kind wishes. And, yes, I am very famous over at the Barefoot Runners Society homepage- this week, anyway.

My 10 Miler went fine yesterday.  I was slower than I'd hoped, 90:20, but then, it's probably just about right in terms of how much milage I'd actually logged lately.  My calf and the rest of my running equipment held up just fine, and this morning of the day after, I feel like going out for a run (though I'm going to restrain myself until tomorrow.)  The other interesting part of the run was that they'd billed it as a pretty flat out and back, but had rerouted it it to get around some construction and introduced some of the biggest hills I've encountered since I started back to running.  Oooo, my!  Other than that, it was a beautiful, sunny day, starting out at 35 degrees and ending up over 45, and no snow!

All in all, I was feeling my age yesterday, but I'm still mighty glad to have the opportunity to do it.

Good luck to everybody runninng this weekend!

Good job Doc and Joseph!  Hoping everyone's runs this weekend go well.

Weather has turned out here in the SF Bay Area, but haven't been able to get a run in (attending son's robotics competition).

Hopefully I'll be able to get in a nice run today.

I ran the Carlsbad 5000 "World's Fastest 5K" this morning.  It was a gorgeous, perfect morning in Carlsbad, which is a small beach community in northern San Diego county if you're not familiar with the area.  As it turns out it's a pretty big deal race for "real" runners.  There's an invitational elite heat and then they race everyone else by age heats.  I was kind of nervous to be running in a group of only masters (age 40 & up) because I was afraid I'd end up being last.  I ended up with a new PR of 34:31 which is almost 2 minutes faster than my last PR.  I was so excited!  The stats that they posted said that I was 132 in my age/gender group.  I won't now exactly how many were running until they post the results tonight, but looking at the other stats on the same sheet, there were at least 250.  I am very pleased.

I've been running at a faster pace during my training runs but didn't know if it was a fluke.  The best part is that I'm feeling really solid.  My IT band has not been bothering me and my calves & shin splints have quieted down.  I'm hoping everything holds up as I start slowly adding on additional miles.

    Have a great week everyone!

Ran my first 10k today, a little hilly one good hill at mile 4.5, but very windy.  Beautiful scenic run along the coast line in Cohasset, MA.  I was hoping to break 60 minutes, and not only did I break it, I smashed it, 51:11.  I've got two 5K's scheduled and then a half at the end of May.  I was looking for around  two hours in the half, but may have to re-think that.

I felt great after the 10K and just did 5 this morning.  I usually do five 5's during the week (rest Friday) and a long on Saturday. My longest has been about 15 I think.  I have never really figured the distances and only run with a stop watch to keep time.  I usually do my runs based upon time, 40-45 minutes during the week and now I am pushing 2.5 hours on the Saturday run.  Maybe 2 hours is possible.

Joseph, Great article @ BFS, wow, we have a celebrity in our midst. Congrats on your 10 miler.

PJ, PR on 5K, Awesome!!  Carlsbad is a lovely area. My DH and stayed at a quaint little resort (time share) a block from the beach several years ago. It was a cold December, but we really enjoyed it.

Doc, PR on 5K, Whoo Hoo!  My cousin and her family are active in the Anniston running community. she loves it and says the group is wonderfully supportive. I'm sure they do their share of support as the entire family are good runners, he is a BQ, daughter runs CC at UA. I wish I had a group like that. You are lucky.

Bob, Congrats on 10K.... wow, you did "SMASH" your goal time.

I'm anxious to hear from Di as to how she liked the Knoxville Marathon this past weekend. I sure wish I could have ran in it.....next year!

I ran 5miles on treadmill last Thursday and have been sore ever since. WHY?? I haven't gotten sore by running that distance (or any other distance) on the road. Outside of both hips has bothered me, I'm a bit gun shy since the hip stress fracture.  I had run 2 short miles on the road the day prior to running the 5 on the TM, so maybe it

.was just a bit of "over training".  I'll go back to every other day this week and see if I have problem, if not, go back to adding the 4th  day of training next week.

Hope everyone has a great week.

    .... your challenges?

Congratulations for all the great results for the racers this weekend:  Joseph,  PJ (PR!!! WTG),  BobL (good luck on the upcoming half!), Doc (PR!)

I am finally healthy enough to sign up for a 5k on the 16th.  Though my training has been poor, I am determined to give 30 minutes a good go.

Our weather here has been just plain schizophrenic!  50's last week, mid 80's yesterday, severe thunderstorms right now (no golf today), going down to 30's over night tonight.  Its a wonder the earth doesn't crack here.

    Re: My challenge

Its been a while since I have been totally healthy.  But I am nearly there.

After getting over the calve and Achilles strains (thanks to Kiirk and Marie for the roller recco'), I developed a severe pain in my right foot.  I don't know if it was running on a tread mill or running in V FF's too soon, but it scared me enough to go to the doc.    He thought it was a broken metatarsal but an X-Ray indicated no broken bones and the pain calmed down a few days after I went back to the Nike Free's for my walks/runs. So I am only using the V FFs now for casual walking to hopefully strengthen my feet. I am also a bit wary of running on the tread mill now.

Very limited running for the last couple of months hasn't helped my endurance. The walking and small amount of running I have done during recovery has helped my progress toward the minimalist style. I am more able to relax now and my running has quieted down indicating less impact impulse.

This whole transition to minimalist running is a work in progress and even more of an education. I am convinced it is a better way to run. But I am also convinced that the transition can be very difficult for those with a good amount of excess weight or with feet that have been coddled by cushioning and arch supports for years.  I have both of those maladies and must add being 64 does not aid in the transition.  Progress has been good if not painful.

I believe the transition to minimalist or BF running will be different for each individual.  The only theme of transition that will apply to most is to take it slow and easy; real easy!  If others are like me, it is hard to transition by doing a little of the minimal to get used to it while doing the traditional style in traditional shoes to keep endurance up. After a couple of weeks of the smaller drop shoes and no inserts, I was uncomfortable in my traditional shoes and shied away from doing both.  I have no idea if others can do both during the transition period, but it would be of benefit to those who can.

I have scheduled a 5 k  race a week from Saturday and am hoping to do it in under 30 minutes.  I have done a couple of 5k training run/walks in under 35 mins,  so I am not far off.  My speed has not been affected as much as my  endurance and I have some time to get back up to the condition I was in  last Dec. That is my near term challenge.

It felt good to get our and run in the heat yesterday.  The best run of the year for me. Not too short and not too slow.  3 miles running in just under 33 minutes plus .5 mi of walking.  Looking forward to just running again not compromised by some injury.

    Good running

    Jack

    Re: My challenge

Jack, It is so good to see you back to running and I know you were relieved that wasn't a broken bone in the arch. I wish you well on your upcoming race.  A word of caution....don't push it too hard and reinjure yourself.

Have you decided on the VFF's or the Nike Frees as your shoe of choice?  After my last cpl of runs, my Asic Gels are beginning to hurt. they

only have about 30i0 miles, but I'm a forefoot striker naturally and that is where they are failing me.  To support my chi running focuses, I plan to go to a more minimalist shoe, so have been doing a bunch of research. At this point I really don't know any more than when I started.   I just rknow that I don't want to go naked . The world would not want me going naked either. It would crack for sure.

Anyhow, my morning run was great....windy....oh my lawd was it windy!!! But, I put on my tank top & capris and got my dairly rda of Vit D while doing my 3.1 m run.
