Now that I have started a formal Half Marathon Training Program with a group, I am attending weekly interval trainings at the track.  I am interested to see how they will help.  We work alot on form and pace awareness as well, along with some other drills.  So far I find them challenging.  This week we did something called the ladder where we ran half a lap, recovered for half the time it took, ran a full lap, recovered for half the time it too, ran a lap and a half, recovered for half the time then ran two laps, recovered for half the time and worked our way simarly back down to half a lap.  I find it interest to run about half a mile for warm up, do more stretching, drills and then do the work out and finish with a 2 lap cool down run.  Very different.

I have always included a hill run in my weekly.  I did find as the distance on it increase so did my speed in races.  I think some of it is mental, so when I hit a hill in a race I know I can tackle it rather than survive, but I do run stronger.  My understanding is that when it gets too dark to run at the track we will switch to hill training where we run short repeated bursts uphill.  I can't say "eager" describes my frame of mind on that change.  No races planned until the half in October.  But I may breakdown and do a Sunday 10K depending how the training is going since Sunday is our longer runs.

Lew & Laurel- Good luck on your 5K's tomorrow!!  Laurel- when you start off on your race, in the excitement, you may be drawn to go much faster than your normal pace, and you may find yourself out of breath very early in the race.  When you notice it, just back off somewhat until you get to a sustainable speed.

Unless your training has prepared you for it don't start pushing your pace until mid-way or mile 2 or 2.5 (depending upon your conditioning).  But as you approach the end, start increasing your pace, or do intervals of fast and slow, until you get within sprinting distance of the end-then go for it if you have anything left!

If you can, it is a REAL good idea to drive the course at least once before the race, so that you won't be surprised with a really big hill at the middle or the end.  Use your car odometer to note what mileage the hills are at, how long they are, and how far any downslopes are.  Modify your race plan to include slowing down (or walking) the hills and taking advantage/accelerating on the down hills.

Now - just go have fun!! No matter what your pace (fast or slow) remember that the only one you are competing with is yourself - and you will be setting a PR (personal record) on the race because it is your first official event.  Good Luck!

I too have a 5K race tomorrow.  It is the one year anniversary of my first race - when I was so slow (>62mins) I was >12 mins after the last other finisher.  The course has some hills and it will be hot and humid at starting time (8AM) tomorrow, so I should finish somewhere between 42-45 mins - not my best time.  I'm am so tired of the heat that I've kind of slacked off on my training this week, so will see how my race pace is affected.

Bill- when you do hill repeats, how steep is the hill that you run and how far do you run?  I've got the option of a 1-2 min moderate incline, and a really steep hill you practically have to walk up.  I can't do hills anywhere near a race or speed intervals because they really wipe out my legs.

HAPPY, COOL 5Ks to all of the 50 and over runners running tomorrow!!!!

Seriously!  You all have me so psyched.  I'm gonna be rooting for you all day tomorrow.  Have fun, take care, and let us know how it goes!

I will probably be visiting a RoadRunner Sports store. I'm thinking that I will "reward" my legs with a pair of new shoes, since I am done with C25K now.  Considering all the walking and stuff over the years, I'm very sure I've worn these old shoes out!  And we have a tax-free period going on in Maryland right now.  I'm thinking an Asics or Adidas or maybe Nike, provided they confirm I'm right about my foot and foot-plant and so on!

Hi to all and good luck to those running in the morning!  It's been a while since I've been on so am a little behind.  Been doing my outisde runs after 8:00 at night because of the heat.  I "think" I'm getting better (maybe).  Doing the Elvis Presley 5K in the morning.  It's my 4th year to do it with my daughter.  We've never really worried about our times in the past but I would like to be better this year.  My last 5K was June 14.   Started out way too close to the front and way too fast.  Actually thought about quitting at mile two but did finish in 37:38.  Got very discouraged because it was my slowest time to date.  It's not a bad time but I just could not make myself even attempt to run until the finish liine and that was because it was down hill which was very discouraging.    Saw a t-shirt once that rings true for me - "I love to run - when it's over!"

There's a group of us that go at 6:00 am on Sunday mornings.  We do about 6 miles.  There could be 4 - 7 people of different abilities but nobody gets left behind.  We walk the first 5 minutes and then we alternate run/walking with each light pole and then run the last half mile.  I really enjoy this because there is one person that has always thought she couldn't run and she's doing great!  Everybody is doing better actually.

Am looking forward to seeing everybody's results!

Good luck to everyone racing today.  Just finished my 3 miles this morning, 7 miles tomorrow.  I ran 3 miles then walked 2 miles with my wife and daughter.  My other daughter and I are running a 10K on my birthday.  I am looking forward to it.  I would have never thought 3 months ago that  I would be looking forward to running 6 miles on my birthday. May the force be with all runners today!!!

Well, I guess I'll be the first to report in.  Today dawned humid and 75 deg & temps went up from there. Probably was 80 deg at 8AM race start.  This is a relatively small local race w 226 folks doing the 5K run.  This is my first race without my Nike+. For some reason the unit is not working anymore, even though I got a new iPod and a new Nike+, it just doesn't "see" the transmitter.  I miss the capability of pushing a button and getting pace and distance info.

I started out at the back as always, but I wasn't the last one anymore!  I slowly started passing people, even during the first quarter mile.  There were many people just like I was last year - quickly out of breath after only a few minutes.  But for me - NOT TODAY!  I took advantage of the downslopes and chugged up all of the hills, even the steepest one before mile 2.  I never walked.  I did mile 1 in 12:08, mile 2 and 3 around 13.5 min each.  Between 2.5 & 3 miles is a gradual hill which I managed okay, then picked up the pace to sprint to the finish!

I finished in 40:47, about 20 sec less than my PR, which was flatter and on a cooler day.  So I'm very happy with the results, because I expected to take 2-3 mins longer.  Who know what my time would have been with optimum conditions?  I finished 199/226, 10 mins before the last finisher & 22 mins less than when I did this race last year.  Plus I'm 55 lbs less.  I was the 2nd oldest woman running, and the only one in my age group (so I got 1st).

This is my first race with a heart monitor (on my Garmin 310XT).  Last week when I did a slow long 6 mi run in the heat, my HR ranged from 140-160 (mostly zone 2&3). with a 148 ave.  Today, I spent 2.4 mi in Zone 4, with a race average of 168, and a peak near 100% during the .1 mi sprint to the finish.  It will be very interesting to use this as a tool during my normal training to push myself a little harder on the easy runs, and to use for interval training.  I just need the foot pad so I can use it on the TM.

So thank you for all your great wishes - I'm sure that helped me along.  I hope that everyone else who raced had a great time and race too.

Congratulations Jasmine!  I am running the San Diego AFC 5k tomorrow and hope to report back improvement over last year.  This morning my running group ran 6 miles and I did it!!!!!  The first 3 were rough, but something just happened at around mile 4 and I suddenly felt good and didn't have any trouble finishing.  That happened 2 weeks ago when I ran 5 miles too.  I know you're supposed to rest before a race, but I signed up for the 5k months ago before I ever dreamed of joining a running club and training for a half marathon.  The coach told those of us running the 5k tomorrow to go ahead and run today.  I'll probably be sore tomorrow, but I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do this year.

Good luck to everyone else running races this weekend!

PJ- After not running since Sunday (due to heat wuss syndrome), I went to the gym yesterday and did a 3.5 mi moderate workout, even though I had a race today.  I followed it with a 1 mile walk to loosen everything up. I didn't have any problems today, but that may have been due to lack of training volume this week.  Good luck tomorrow.

Way to go Jasmine!!  Awesome!  This thread continues to intrigue & help me; keep it up everyone; and Welcome new folks!!  I have had some challenges my last few runs.  My hubby decided he would start working out again (Yes!); and w/ that; walks 6 miles at the nearby park.  Decided I would go & see what would happen.  I had been logging around 30 miles a wk; & attempting once a week long runs.  I managed the first three miles; thought I was doing ok; but shortly after my "turn around" to begin the last three miles; I see my husband. I am thinking; he must be really walking fast or I am running slow!!  I made the terrible mistake of "really cranking" my stride.....NOT a good thing; pulled a hamstring!  Should have just started walking; but continued to run; very stupid!  Still hurting from it ( it's been a week since it happened).  I have tried to ice it when I can & take Ibruprofin; feels ok till I start to run!  Cut down on days ran; did not run for 2 days straight; did 5 miles this a.m.; not terrible pain; but still quite aware it's still there!!  Combine that w/ the humidity this morning; it was a challenge!!  Really need to get some long runs in; w/ half-marathon the end of September!!  Time is ticking away; and I really do not feel prepared!!  I am SO looking forward to cooler weather; as I am sure alot of you are!!  To anyone that had a race today....you ALL are awesome!!  Keep running & writing!!  Make it a good weekend!

I did 4 miles yesterday; first time ever over 3.5 miles and only the third time over 3.1 miles.  I am trying to add 1/2 mile a week until Halloween. I should be at around 8 miles or so by then maybe 7 or 7.5 if I miss a week so we'll see. I might be ready for that 10K after all. The biggest thing I need to do is lose some more weight by then. I think that will help immensely.
