The day before Memorial day I fractured my third metatarcil (sp?) - my foot... It still hurts a little but I am not in a cast anymore. Has anyone had experience with this? How long until I can run again? I have a feeling my doctor is being super conservative telling me to wait 3 months!
One good general rule of thumb is: if you can walk without pain, you can start to run slowly/ jog. If you can jog without pain, you can start to run.
Needless to say, a lot depends on the severity of the original injury. For example, a complete break will typically take longer to heal than a stress fracture (where the bone is not completely broken through). It also depends on to what extent your foot/leg has been immobilized during the healing process. Since your foot was completely immobilized in a cast, there will be a lot more muscle atrophy than if the foot had been in an orthopedic boot (which can be taken off periodically to allow movement) or not in a boot at all.
My own experience is with a minor metatarsal stress fracture which I got from weight training about 20 yrs ago. The fracture was sufficiently minor that it could not even be seen initially on the X-ray. The final diagnosis was made about 4 weeks later when the thickened bone (part of the healing process) could be seen on X-ray. I was not in a cast, was fully weight bearing, and was allowed to get by with just stiff soled hiking boots (not even an orthopedic boot) as long as I did not flex my foot. That's a pretty minor fracture. Even with that, it was 6 weeks till I was cleared to start running, and I don't think I could have started any earlier without re-injuring it. For a more severe fracture that requires casting, I would think 3 months would not be out of the question.
