So I guess you can say I'm on a sports movie kick right now and it might be due to the fact that I'm new to life without college athletics after graduating this May, but either way a kick is a kick. Here are my two favorites...Hoosiers, a definite classic, and Blue Chips. I'm not going to say Shaq and the rest of the crew should win an academy award, but it's a good flick.
What's your favorite basketball movie?
White Men Can't Jump.
"We goin' to Sizzzzler! We goin' to Sizzzzler!"
"Billy you sooo stooopid!"
HOOSIERS!!!!
Hoop Dreams is it for me with Hoosiers a close second. I think every kid with dreams of making it to the NBA should be required to watch this film.
Ah! You got me. I was trying to think of the name of that film to include in my list, but the name just wouln't come to me and I didn't want to cheat and Google it. I watched that movie in film school and it was very interesting. Do you happen to know what happened to those guys? Seems to me one of them played at least semi-pro ball at some point, but I think that's about it. The movie was actually pretty sad. I thought it did a good job of putting into perspective how slim the chances are of any athlete, no matter how good they are, making the pros in their given sport.
I haven't seen Hoop Dreams!!! I just found the trailer on YouTube cause half the time I can't remember if I have or have not seen a movie. I need a refresher. It looks good and from what you guys have said, I'll definitely need to check it out.
I also found out some interesting trivia about this movie...
This film helped change the rules for how the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences hands out Academy Awards for Documentary work. When this film failed to get an nomination for Best Documentary, even though it was nominated for Best Film Editing, Entertainment Weekly magazine ran a story about how the organization voted for documentary nominations. They discovered that not only were most of the people voting not documentary filmmakers but that they actually worked against giving this film a nomination. As a result, the rules were changed so that documentary filmmakers actually vote in this category.
Many of the locations used in the movie are now either gone or substantially different. The neighborhood of the Cabrini Green housing project, where one of the players lived, underwent a "gentrification" shortly after the film wrapped. The baseball field shown, for example, now has been replaced by luxury condos and a shopping complex.
An excellent basketball movie is "One on One" with Robby Benson and Annette O'Toole. The movie was made in 1977 and captures the feel of big time college basketball in that era perfectly. Benson plays a small town high school player who is recruited into a national college powerhouse coached by veteran character actor G.D. Spradlin. The film touches on the dark underside of college recruiting (no show jobs, money delivered in brown paper bags) and shows how college basketball is not a sport, but strictly a business. If you played basketball during this era (which I did) you will get a kick out of the knee high socks and short shorts. I understand the movie is difficult to find on DVD. Here's the link the the Internet Movie Database for more info.
Never seen it! Cool. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
I am kind of surprised that I don't see many responses including "Coach Carter" or "Glory Road" or the documentary "The Heart of the Game" - they are three of my favorites to of course include Hoosiers. If you have not seen them - I highly recommend them.
Arrrgh...i can't remember the name of the movie. But my favorite one was the one where there was this coach who went to Africa and scouted a really tall basketballer who then made it back in the US. Arrrgh...I'm really bad with movie names but I'm sure someone out there knows which movie I am talking about. Help me out here, please.... ![]()

Loved Hoosiers - also liked Space Jam, because I am huge fan of the Loony Tunes cartoons.
