I wanted to get some opinions from anybody who has completed a long distance duathlon. I was scheduled to race the Soma Tri in Tempe on Oct 24, however the dam broke last week in Tempe Town Lake and they have changed the triathlon to a duathlon. This was going to be my first half ironman distance race, and unfortunately there will be no swim - hard to do without any water.
What is the typical beginning run distance for a long distance duathlon, when the final run is 13.1 miles? I have wanted to try a duathlon some day, however I was leaning more to a shorter distance duathlon - 10k run, 40k bike, 10k run.
I am in the middle of my training for a half ironman tri, and am really leaning towards signing up for Silverman in Las Vegas (which is the first week in Nov). This fits in my training schedule, however I have read that Silverman is one of the more difficult races.
So, I either race the duathlon in Tempe of Silverman in Vegas........
We've commented on facebook, so I knew you had this event coming up. Yes, you can't swim without the lake... Did the race organizers decide how long the run portions will be?
I think Active Toby did the Silverman race, but I'm not sure. As with any event, there's so many factors out of our control, this was one logistical issue most athletes probably didn't consider. Wow. I hope your training and future racing continues to go well.

Thanks for the reply! RedRock Co which runs the Soma Tri went above and beyond considering the situation. They had 3 triathlons scheduled from now through the end of the year - all with swims in Tempe Town Lake. All 3 tris were changed to duathlons - for the half distance they changed from the swim to a 5k. Additionally, if you didn't want to switch to a duathlon, you could use 100% of your fee for one of their events next year!
Not many companies would offer a reimbursement like that, considering they lost their lake!
I decided to register for the Silverman Half in Vegas, instead of the duathlon. I'm a little nervous because I've heard its a tough course, but I've also read its one of the best run and organized races around.
I'll let you know how it goes!
