MelissaWood7, do you know if there are any podcasts for the bridge to 10k program? Or does anyone know of any podcasts for that program?

I went out and did my W5D2 on my lunchbreak. It took a few minutes to decide if i wanted to do it or not. I am glad I did. I feel so much better. I wish I had yaktrax. I am thinking of looking for some this weekend. But anyway, it was an interesting workout. I think this week I can handle the W5D3 (the 20 min straight run) I will just woggle it lol

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hi, Runningangel:  Are you on Facebook?   There is a great page/group there at "The Bridge to 10K Running Program" which includes the basic training plan:  W1 - run 10 min, walk 1 min...4 times
    W2 - run 15 min, walk 1 min...3 times
    W3 - run 17 min, walk 1 min....3 times
    W4 - run 18 min, walk 1 min....3 times
    W5 - day 1 - run 22 min, walk 1....2 times.
    W5 - day 2 - run 25 min, walk 1....2 times
    W5 - day 3 - run 30 min, walk 1....2 times
    W6 - run 60 min

Plus pod casts for each week.  I haven't tried them as I have yet to do my first 5K but do have my heart set on a 10K by the end of the year, so will be tackling that next.   I googled "Bridge to 10K" and got quite a few options so lots seems to be out there.    Good luck to you!!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Welcome PJBE.  I also frequently come in last or near last.  I guess I have gotten used to it, but it still bothers me a little.  I guess someone has to come in last.

Since we recently had a big snowstorm and there is still a lot of snow on the ground, I went inside today to do intervals on a treadmill to work on my speed.  Although I did not do it for very long, I was pleased with what I did.  I probably should do that once a week.  Also, today at my job they had a wellness fair.  They had various athletic/fitness activities you could sign up for.  I believe at this point they are just trying to see the level of interest for these activities, to see if they have enough people interested in forming classes/groups.  I signed up for several of these, including a running group.  As I have stated before, I usually stay away from any type of athletic/fitness groups due to my lack of speed, and the fact that no one will ever wait for me.  But I will at least check it out to see how it is.

SteveBikeRun - I think my area must get snowstorms one day, then you get them the next day, although I think this last storm hit a large area at the same time.

This board has been quiet - what has everyone been up to?

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hi SloMo2- I am usually last or next to last. At least in the events I have signed up for. But that is because I was not disciplined enough to stick to any type of training plan. This time though, I am pretty proud of myself for sticking to a running plan. I have had to rearrange my running nights and have repeated a week here or there. I am actually repeating W5 this week. I was supposed to do my W5D2 workout last night but I got stuck in my parking area and spent 40 minutes shoveling and then parking my car. So I will do my W5D2 workout tomorrow and then do my W5D3 on sunday or monday. I know you are supposed to give a day of rest in between but I don't want to fall too far behind because I am afraid that I may give up and not complete the C25K.

I am thinking that alot of the posters for this board are probably shoveling themselves out of this winter storm that we just had. We got somewhere between 15-18 inches in Vermont. How much did you get?

Hey MelissaWood- I never have read your accomplishments before that is great that you were able to loose 56 pounds last year I am looking for some success in that area.  I would like to loose about 40 pounds by July 1st (about 6 pounds a month, 1.5pounds a week) and so far I keep tettering among the same 5 pound loss for the last couple of weeks but I keep telling myself that I am gaining muscle as I am repeating Week 6 of C25K.

Well I know that running will get me there eventually as it has before, I just must enjoy the ride, which I am BTW!!  I ran in 20 degree weather this morning and it was so invigorating I love the since of accomplishment first thing in the morning.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

    Hello everyone!

I am going to try a post again. I have had very little luck with it the last few days.

This is the first week in the 13 weeks that I have been training for HM's that I have had to do my 3 runs for the week on the TM.

I live in the deep south and we have had high N winds, rain, sleet and ice all week with temps into the low teens.

I don't mind the cold, but I am not going to run in cold, pouring rain or ice.

Thankfully I am in taper and did not have very long runs and I am planning on doing my long run of 8 outside tomorrow.

Next week will be the week of the HM so only 3 days of easy short runs!

I must say that running on the TM instead of outside has made me feel like I am less prepared for my HM. It is just

so much easier to run on the TM than outside. I do not feel that I get as much out of it. Ofcourse, this is a personal thing!

I'm in Ohio so we mostly got freezing rain.  Enough to shut schools down for a couple of days and make it a challenge to get to and from the car lol Sidewalks are starting to clear up so hopefully I can do a run outisde without worrying about falling on my butt.  I can still run on the treadmill but I like getting outdoors at least once a week so I don't get bored with it.

Ran yesterday and plan a  long one tomorrow. Today was 90 min on the stationary bike. I don't see how some of you can do 2 or 3 hrs on the treadmill. Hoping we don't get freezing rain tonight, that would mess up my plans.

Good luck to any running races this weekend.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Re being quiet lately -- I can't blame the weather.  I think you all are getting the storms we normally get so I don't have that excuse.  I've been struggling to fit things into each day -- I though retirement is supposed to be easy!

PJBE -- I am a member of the slow club, too.  I do speed intervals once a week to try to speed up, but my sprint is still about an 8 min mile, so not really very fast.  I keep at it  and enjoy doing it, but I think I am just not built for speed.

This week has been busy because I am trying to get myself moving towards a sprint level triathalon (although sprint is an oxymoron for me). I just swam my first laps on Wednesday and biked yesterday -- both something I haven't done for about 30 years or so.  I've discovered a bunch of new muscles -- just like when I started walking and running.  Now, if I can just remember to breathe OUT under water, things will go better. Cleared out my sinuses, though.   I did 8 laps, which pleased me, because I wasn't sure I could do even two laps.  I didn't run out of energy, I ran out of time due to a chiropractor appointment.  The biking I am taking slowly to build up the  needed butt callous so I don't get saddle sores.  I think I rode about 5 or 6 miles over 45 minutes -- practicing starting, stopping, and changing gears.  Since my adventure at being unable to stop the bike I was trying out at the store, I'm a little nervous about the whole stopping thing, but it went well.  Fitting in 3 sessions each of running, swimming, and biking with a day of rest each week is going to be challenge.

    Keep on keeping on!

    Re:Calling all Penguins(slow runners)..

Mimi- You've really gotten hit with the vicious ice storms there in MS!  My last outdoor run was the long one last Sunday.  Since then, I've only done four much shorter ones on the TM.  My last mid-long run is Sunday and the weather (cross-fingers) is forecast to be just right.

This winter is weird.  Normally we'll get maybe one snow day in N. AL per year.  This year we had 6" at Christmas, 8" mid-Jan, plus 3 other light snows/mix so far, and two forecast for next week.  What is going on here? Now I know that for you northerners might laugh at our whimpering, but this is the South! Still I don't envy any of you with 2 feet of snow and sub-zero temps. No Thank You!

Other Penguins- Yep I definitely am one too! When I started 5K's I was often at or near the end.  Now I'll finish ahead of 10-20%.  But on longer races, where slow people just don't sign up (like 10K's, HM's) I still am finishing very near the rear (last 1-5%). But I am getting better, as long as my training stays consistent and I eventually lose more weight.

RetiredGirl - There is a thread for Slow Triathletes if you are interested. I did four (very slow) sprint tri's last year, and I'm training for more this year.  On May 15, I'm repeating the IronGirl Sprint Tri in Atlanta, and I hope my improved running endurance will improve my overall time for the race (I walked a lot last year in the 5K).  Starting into swimming and biking right now is a new challenge for you, adding to the running you already do, but gradually your distances, then endurance will improve.  I have only been riding a spin cycle this winter - I'm still a outdoor cycling wimp in cold or crappy weather.

Keep warm, y'all!  Drive safe and train safe!

Runningangelinvt - We got about 6-8 inches here in the midwest, but some places in this area got up to 2 feet of snow.  So I guess I can't compete with the 15-18 inches that you got in VT, but I still don't like it.  Plus, with the wind blowing, it made for very high snow drifts.  Our next round is scheduled for Sunday night/ Monday morning.  Fortunately I will be inside Sunday night watching the Super Bowl.

Jasmine1972 - I am interested in the slow triathlete message board.  Can you post the link?

SloMo2, that is a great message board. I've done 2 (2006 and 2008) I found them alot of fun. Of course the 2 I've done I didn't train very well. So I am hoping this year I will do better due to sticking with the C25k program and the 100 days of movement challenge. Good luck to you.
