Thanks Mimi for the feed back and the gentle reminder . I needed to hear that. Yes, I sure don't want to

experience another fracture, so I'll take my walk breaks as needed and remind myself that Dr. Mimi ordered them.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

    Hello everyone!

I am so happy that I found this group!  I have 3 half-marathons under my belt, and I've never finished any of them in less than 3 hours.  One of them I completed with the police car right behind me the entire time, and the water stations were closed by the time I got to them!  It was very sad and upsetting.  A few of my friends are die-hard runners, and very competitive, but I've never felt the urge to keep up with them.  I like enjoying the air and the scenery around me, and I would be happy being a slow runner if I didn't get heckled by them every time we ran.  So inevitably, I've ended up running by myself just so I can enjoy it.  Finding this Penguins group is great because I finally feel like I belong somewhere and I have no shame in it.  Besides, the Penguin gear is much cuter than all of the other runner's gear that I've seen out there!

    Thanks for listening!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Merlynda:  Any half marathon that would close the water stops before every runner comes through is not worth doing.  A sub-three hour time is still respectable and the organizers should wait for everyone, regardless of time.  Shame on them.

Re:... Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Marie: I ditto Mimi's reply - As a relatively new, and still overweight runner age 56, my very nature keeps me from pushing hard enough to induce injury.  I have a mental self-defense trigger that tosses me out of a consistent training pattern and produces set backs or lack of progress.

I reviewed my training progress last yr, and I did improved training & wt loss thru the end of June (for my first BIG sprint Tri).  Then because of the heat, the longer runs to build to my first HM and maybe some burnout, my training progress slowed & wt loss stopped.  From July to Dec training volume slacked off and I lost tone. In Dec eating discipline disappeared, mileage shrunk more & I gained 6-8 lbs. So I wasn't injured, but lost progress just the same.

Starting in ea. Jan, I started serious training again to build up to this HM.  Now training volume is back up, my tone (inches) is back to 6/30 #'s, and so is my weight.  I look forward to 4-5 more months of progress before summer heat makes me taper back a little. I don't think I'll ever try a marathon, unless I can get my HM time down to <2.5 hrs.  The only thing that keeps it on the back of my mind is when I look thru the Running magazine and see all of the great places that hold marathon races.  But there are many HM's too, so maybe that will have to do.

I have another HM 4/30, and then a sprint tri 5/15, so after the HM this weekend, I look forward to shorter long runs (at least for a while) and more cross training. I've got to learn to do more "quality" workouts, vs "quantity", so that I can avoid burnout while still improving my times.

Mimi - I look forward to meeting you this weekend.  Though you will probably finish 10-20 mins ahead of me, we won't be lonely out on the course, as the marathoners will be "lapping" us. (LOL).  This last two weeks, I've been running every other day, so today and Thursday are my only scheduled runs, then taper.  My cross-training this week is boot camp, easy swimming and some spin cycling - just to burn cals, but not to stress too much. & If I'm too tired, I'll skip some.

Re:... Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hi JoAnn! I am looking forward to meeting you also and I would not be so sure that I will finish that much ahead of you or ahead of you at all! You have trained on hills more than I have. Actually, I have done very little training on hills since there are none around me! But, I am not the type of person that stresses about time or that the marathoners will be lapping me! I hope if they are running a marathon that they ARE lapping me because if they are not, then they are going to be out there a looooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggg time! I have a goal to finish in <3hrs. If I do then fantastic! If I do not so be it. It is what it is. My main goal is to complete the race, come across the finish line with a little pep to my step and enjoy the ride! A month from now, no one will remember or care what my time was in this event and I probably will not either! Like you, I am looking forward to training for my 10K in March with shorter long runs and building speed again vs. endurance.

As for Marathons...I am not going to say that I will never do one, because I said that I would never do a HM and this will be my second within 5 weeks! So, you never know! I am still just a baby in this sport as far as time spent running and miles logged. I have read that it usually takes at least 3 -4 years of running before you get pretty good at it! My problem is by then I will be on Social Security! At least I will have more time to train!

I did 3 miles this morning and I have a 2 mile run on Thursday morning and the will finish me up for the week until Sunday! I have KB tonight and Thursday night, but I am just going to chill this week in prep for Sunday! It looks like we are going to have excellent weather!!!!

Merlynda! I second what Kirk said, if they closed up the aid stations before everyone was off the course, then shame on them and I would not enter that event again! Also, I think you might want to reconsider the people that you have been running with. I cannot imagine any runner heckling another person for being a slow/slower runner than them. I am a member of a running club and have run with some of the upper elete runners that run marathons in 3-3:30 or less and I told them that I could not keep up with them so I would run alone. They told me no way! We will not leave you, we will adjust to your pace! And they did!!! Most of your elete runners are very supportive and proud of people that are trying to better themselves by learning to run! If the people you around does not......ditch them quickly!

Marie! Thanks for the good wishes! We will have a blast, no matter what!!!

Re:... Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Mimi- I did boot camp yesterday & spin cycle; swimming & 3 miles easy on the TM today. Tomorrow maybe a short, fast run on the TM, plus boot camp, then repeat today's workout on Thurs.  Got my hair cut yesterday & I may get a pedicure Thurs or Fri.  Normally I also run on relatively flat trails or paved roads.  But there is a quiet 3 mi service road nearby, adjacent to the freeway, w 2 mi of variable hills. I've used that the last 3 weeks to simulate the course.  The rest of the hills around here are either too steep to run, or have too much traffic.

Weather looks as good as it can get for winter (37->59), so I'm dressing light for the HM (plus a lite jacket) but I'm bringing all of my cold weather options, just in case. When you get into town, try to drive the route at least once (in spite of the traffic), so that at least you can preview the actual hills.  There are a few that are "walking" hills for me for sure, and then others that will be dependent on how tired I am.  Luckily the last 5K is mostly downgrade. I just hope I have enough gas left in my legs to benefit from it.

hi all, I just need to vent for a few minutes. I am a little ticked at myself because I am losing motivation in running. I do get out there my 3 days a week but lately Im not into it. And I have sort of come up with useless excuses to avoid going to the gym. Does anyone have any suggestions as to finding motivation again? I also think that since I have started the C25K and  my weight has not really changed.( I've lost maybe 7 or 8 lbs since november 2010.) that may be one issue of no motivation. I just need a swift kick in the pants I think. thanks

So glad to see this thread. I recently started walking to build up to running. I am experiencing not just shin splints, but also pain around the sides of my legs running from my ankles and half way up to my knee. It's more of a burn. I notice it more on inclines and paths that are level from left to right. Am I ever going to work through this? When people say, "just push through the pain," is this what they are referring to?

JoAnn, have your run this course before? You sound very familiar with it. I have looked at the elevation map and it looks like the first 4.5 miles is realitively flat, then from 4.5 to around 8.2 to 8.3 looks as though it is rolling hill with fairly large hill and another smaller hill that is steep, but short. Then it looks as though from 8.3 to 13.1 it is mostly a gentle downgrade to the finish line. Do you agree with this or am I misinterpreting it?

I am 52 years old and started running in 2007 to lose weight, so far I have lost 60 pounds. Along the way I have lowered my bad cholesterol and raised my good cholesterol. I am curently training for my 4th full marathon, the Southern Indiana Classic in April.

I have started a blog to document my journey from an over weight, out of shape couch potato to marathon runner.

Today's blog entry was entitled "Penguins"

Thanks Mimi and Steve for the support!  I won't say which 1/2 marathon I ran that closed early, just in case there are those out there who love that particular race.  Needless to say I won't be running with them any longer.  As for the people I run with, I haven't ran with them in a very long time.  I do much better by myself anyway.  When I run to please myself, I enjoy my time being out there.  Thanks everyone for posting on this community board.  You are all very inspirational to me!

Mimi: When I was passing thru B'ham 2 wks ago, I had just enough time to drive the course from mile 4.5 to 10 (the hilly part).  It looks like most of it is manageable, but things do look different from a car seat, vs. pounding the pavement. The part of the course I missed is flat or with mild grades (I think). The one thing about the elevation maps is little hills get hidden.  I'll drive the whole course Saturday.

Since I started officially running (October 2010), I have lost 7 lbs that consistently stay off.  However, I am down two sizes and my legs - which were previously, shall we say, alot like squishy jello, have firmed up a ton.  The boobage, which was definitely of the fat-wiggly variety, has trimmed down.  I even now have a waistline that I have not seen in in 5 years.  And the changes to the numbers (cholesterol, HBP etc) are also down.

Weight is just a number.  Muscle weighs more than fat.  YOu are doing a great thing for yourself.  Keep up the good work!  The scale will eventually reward you - in the meantime you are making good lifestyle changes!!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hi, TX248 -- I'd be a little careful about advice to "push through pain".  Pain, especially continuous sharp pain, can sign an impending or current injury.  I've had shin splints and ankle pain myself when I started up doing aerobics back in the 80s.  That pain is no joke.  I'd suggest looking at your shoes -- you need to have high quality, professionally fitted shoes.  You might also think about how fast you are trying to walk -- I noticed that my shin splints were from pushing off strongly with the ball of my foot.  You might be trying to take too long of steps in an effort to speed yourself up.  My trainer got me running from walking by pushing me to take short, fast steps -- he calls it "quick feet".  That leads to a gradual transition from walking to running with a midfoot strike and a much shorter stride -- that might help you, too.

You will have some "discomfort" (I hesitate to call it pain) as you push your muscles -- burning in the muscles towards the end of your workout and tightness or stiffness the next day -- that kind of thing.  But you should not push yourself through continuous sharp pain -- especially if it persists continuously when you're not working out.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hello everyone, I am am a penguin and loving every minute of it.  I have only been running since last April and have dropped some weight, gained it back, and am trying to lose again.  I ran my first 5k in June 2010, and my most recent adventure was a New Years Eve run in Michigan.  I am working towards a 10k next and hoping to finish a 1/2 marathon by the end of 2011.  Any suggestions on how to stay motivated on the treadmill during these bitterly cold winter days?
