I live in Northern Indiana, but I am so close to MI that I have ran 2 races so far in Michigan.  One was in Battle Creek, MI and the other 5k was in Flushing, MI (Near Flint).  We had plans to run in the Frosty 5k but with the -20 windchill temps, I knew I couldn't do it.  I am looking to run the YetiChase in Perma, MI in March.  I just keep trying and hoping that the treadmill will keep me in shape and challenged until I can get back outside again.

Patrick I have no idea why so many people signed up for that Krispy Donut run especially those trying to lose weight. Thats a ridculous amount of calories for one taking. You would have to run a full marathon to burn it off. Not very helpful if your trying to lose weight :/

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Anyone ever use an arc trainer? My calf is super tight, so I may use the arc trainer instead of the treadmill today.  I ended up on the arc trainer the other day and had no idea how to adjust the settings.  I varied the resistance between 25 and 30 and changed the incline throughout.  At least part of the time I was sweating, but I think I might have been too easy on myself.  But, I have no idea what I should be doing.  My treadmill running times are becoming a less Penguin-like 9 or 9:30 per mile over 3-5 miles, which is quite a surprise to me, but I don't know what kind of effort I need to expend on other machines to be the equivalent of that.  (I should wear my HRM!)  Anyway, any tips on how to deal with the arc trainer would b great.

And, on an unrelated note, I agree with Melissa, it's probably more gratifying to become a far more serious runner at 47 (now 48).  I've been an intermittent jogger over the years, but I did not time myself and I did not race.  I started up again in July and ran my first 5K in October.  The increase in my speed from the summer to now has greatly surprised me.  The goal for me is not to get speedy, but in order to sustain the same level of cardio workout, I am getting speedier.  Of course, at some point I'll reach whatever my natural potential is, but from what I've read, even at this age (and barring injuries) I can continue to improve for years. Woo hoo.  So, I think running is like weight loss or losing inches.  Mark your spot where you are right now and celebrate how you progress from there.

Good luck to everyone running the Mercedes full/half marathon tomorrow.  I'm supposed to be starting the related 5K right now but I've developed some oddness in my ankle so I had to sit this one out.  I plan to do the full or half next year for sure.  I think I'll be ready a year from now.

Sarah, if you find out anything on the arc trainer please let me know.  I've never seen anyone using one and didn't even know what they were called till I saw your post and did a google search on arc trainers.  I'm a real sucker for new gadgets.  I would dig into it more but I need to get to work sometime today!  Since I'm not running the 5K I thought I'd head to the office.  Not nearly as fun as running but it pays better!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Went to my first meeting with the local running group today and it was so AWESOME!!  I had hesitated like a lot of penguins, afraid I'd be the slowest or be ridiculed or feel unworthy, so to speak.  But it was so incredibly wonderful!!!!   Everyone was so friendly and supportive.   So, they were holding some timed sessions for us members of their new runner's program and I made 11 minutes 36 seconds for the mile, which is my best time EVER!!  There is absolutely something about running with others that spurs one on to better things.     The timers were even "cheering" us at the "finish line" so I gave one last push up hill to end up.   It was awesome.  I didn't overdo myself because following the timing, I also ran another 4 miles in 54 minutes (13-1/2 min/miles).   I am so excited.  SO, thanks to all those on these boards who have gently encouraged us to join groups!  Thank you.   I might never have done it if not for all of you.   And thanks to all the groups out there who support each other.   I never in a million years imagined I"d be a runner - so every mile is truly a gift.   So, anyone not in a group, go get in one!!!!   LOL.  The excitement of just the trial also gave me a tiny glimpse of what my first race is going to be like next month.

Last night I picked out 2 more races for myself this year . . . a 10K and a 7-miler.   Plus, I've got my mind set for a half marathon next year.  OMG!!!!   Never imagined that either.   But heck yeah!  Why not??!!!   I'm going slow and steady but I think a HM is inside me wanting to get out!  hahahahahahahahaha.

Waddle on, Friends!!!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE running!!

That's great that you found a local running group! We have one here that meets at the Y but kinda hard for me with 3 kids.

Rduguy:  The group I joined is in Mebane - though a couple of the coaches are actually from Durham and Raleigh and come in for it.  It is a great group.   I think there are some groups closer to you - check through the sport running shoe stores.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

I am only in my 3rd week of the C25K THRILLED to find this thread : )   I am 36 with 2 small children at home and started 'running' mainly to get a bit more fit.  I have never been athletic or at all competitive, so I was pleasently suprised to see how much I am enjoying the C25K program.  No eye hand coordination needed - no teammates to let down - just me and my music and a slow paced jog/walk goal.  I was already inherently slow, but also seem to have incurred shin splints so I am going even slower.  I didn't realize that there was an entire subculture of slow runners to join : )

    Thanks!

I ran my first run in seven days and am seriously feeling like I lost my mojo!  My husband actually pushed me outthe door.  I ran 4.5 miles and I wanted to stop all the way but I finished and I will try to get out tomorrow after church.
