Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

I have decided to take my blog into a new direction. I am in the final stages of training for the Southern Indiana Classic Marathon on April 11, 2011. I have decided to challenge myself for the month of March. I am going to post my weight, distance ran, time and training goal on a daily basis. Plus I am going to make a brief comment regarding the days training. Anybody else up for the Challenge?

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Finished the Snow Joke Half Marathon today.  Was -10 degrees when we started but warmed up and by the time I got done was up to 20 degrees.  My time was less than I was hoping for.  I did it in 3 hours 36 minutes.  I know I can do better but that will have to wait until next time.  My back and legs were pretty shot when I finished but feeling better now.  First 5.5 miles are on the highway and it had snowy patches.  Rest of the race is on a plowed county road so was all snow packed.  No porta-potties and that was a problem for me.  Snow was 3 feet deep so the trips to brush patches were no fun!  Once again, my stomach started giving me problems between 6 and 7 mile and continued to until almost 11 mile.  Husband Stan and our dog drove the loop and offered encouragement several times and also walked with me some.  Co-worked also came walked with me a bit after she finished.  What a friend, run 13 miles then walk a couple more to help a friend.  I bought a hydration belt and it didn't come until Friday so I have never run with it until today.  Shouldn't have done it that way.  I think it made the back ache lots worse.  In spite of all those woes - I'm still glad I did it and plan to do others.  I was able to jog all but one hill up to 6 mile and then some after that but once the stomach started acting up I ended up walking most the rest of the loop.  I was hoping for better than that.  About 350 runners.  There were almost 700 last year but the weather probably thinned the ranks.  Felt pretty out of place in that gym.  Most people were 20-30 years younger than me and very slender and fit.  Towards the end the wind picked up some and was blowing the snow out of the trees but luckily I was almost done by then.  I'm rambling!  Thanks for all your encouragement and kind words and I'll be back out there again!

    Hi Everyone,

I finally found an area for runners like me (a Penguin). I am currently training for the Georgia Half Marathon. Check out my YouTube channel and see how I am doing it. I call it the "March 20 Channel". Look for Nighthawk4niner on YouTube. Though in the video I list finishing the run in 2 hours. It was three in the morning and I mispoke. I meant finish it in 3 hours or better. With that let me call it a night since it's 4 in the morning and I have a run at 8 tomorrow.

MamaBear56 - You started running in Dec and you've just completed your 1st 1/2??!! That's amazing. Just walking it would be hard for a lot of people. I don't think first time runners should worry about anything accept finishing, but kudos on your time. That's really quite an accomplishment. Not what you were hoping for, but speaking for myself, I'm impressed and hope I do that well. Congrats!!

Wow, Mama -- you are GOOD!  I probably wouldn't even have shown up under conditions like that -- you go girl  Re your back and stomach issues -- have you tried a chiropractor?  You would probably think of that for your back, but all the nerves run down your spinal column and a problem in your back could affect your stomach as well.  I was surprised when I started going (originally for my back) but the functioning of my stomach changed completely during treatment and it is very cooperative now.  If you already go to one, tell him/her about your stomach symptoms -- they may be able to help.  I was fortunate to find one that works with a lot of athletes and is familiar with all kinds of goofy complaints that come up -- I can't say enough good things about her.

You did it and now you're experienced -- they all say just finish the first and then go on to work on speed.  You are my hero!

Hi, Willie -- welcome to the thread -- we're glad to have you here.  As a mother, I just can't help telling you that you need to get some sleep!  I'm amazed at what you are able to get your body to do without very much sleep. Your body will work for you, but you have to be kind to it and give it sleep and good nutrition.  Enough motherly lecturing -- have pity for my son.

We're all looking forward to hearing about your training and success in your half!

    Hey Mamabear56,

YOU RULE!  I know how cold that race was bc a friend ran it and brrrr was all I got for a text!  I want to get back to my b4 baby shape when I could feel strong.  Oh, btw, my baby is over 27 yrs old!  Sooo, seeing your Mamabear post and then the incredible finish of the Sno-Jok in Seeley Lake, MT made me say, "Okay, this is a true sign to get moving!"  You could be saving my life and many others!  I thank you.  Now, gotta get some belt spray for my Proform Treadmill.  Congrats again and you are a hero!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

MamaBear - Congrats on your first HM.  You are a better woman than I to attempt that distance in such weather! My thighs are freezing just thinking about it. You are a "die-hard" runner babe, as evidenced by the fact that the only others who showed up were the die-hard younger, lighter runners!  What courage!  Sorry that you had the stomach etc issues, but I know that you'll learn to deal with that between now and next time.  Take it easy during your recovery.

Your time is close to my first HM time, & I didn't have that cold to deal with.  For me, instead of stomach, I had leg cramp issues. But I finished my 3rd HM two weeks ago, w no cramps and a big drop in total time.  In my 2nd HM, a friend who is twice as fast as me, turned back after finishing, & met me at mile 10, right when I started my calf cramps.  He joined me the whole way back, jogging or walking as I struggled in.  I can't thank him enough for the support.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

If someone asked me to do a half marathon in -10 degree weather, I would have referred that person to a good therapist.  Mama, you have more determination than about anyone I know.  Congratulations; you have set a great example for the rest of us.  I hope you can sort out your back problems; I agree that a chiropractor is a good place to start.

I found out this morning that my name was selected in the lottery for the Garry Bjorkman Half Marathon in Duluth, MN in mid-June.  This HM is part of the Grandma's Marathon event.  Rather than use the conventional first-come, first-served registration process that we find in most of our races, this HM uses a lottery procedure.  There's a 10-day signup period, after which the 5,700 names are drawn for the race.  Everyone has to give a credit card number that is charged if we're chosen,  so we've committed financially to the race as we sign up.  The entry fee is rather steep at $75, but my sister-in-law lives in Duluth, so we have a place to stay, thereby avoiding exorbitant hotel room rates.  Good thing, because we're now paying $3.50 a gallon for gas here in Chicago and I doubt that it will decline between now and summer.
